Rasa, Embodiment, and Aesthetics : A Case Study from Java
Javanese performance processes and the underlying general aesthetic are linked to mystical practices and beliefs and, consequently, the standards of assessment tend to be based in terms associated with the search for enlightenment. A successful performance in Java can be achieved and described in at least two different ways in terms of embodiment: the performers can bring the piece to life, they can find, seize, and realize the inner life of the piece or they can be filled-up by, seized by, or embody the piece. In both – the active seizing of the inner life of a performance and the passive being filled-up by the performance – the performer is described as if she or he were a vessel into and through which energy and potency flow. The embodying and embodiment of the pieces is obtained through an intense concentration that allows the rasa of the performance to flow into and out of the performer, animating the performer and the performer animating the piece. Both the seizing of the piece by the performers and the seizing of the performers by the piece may happen in the same moment – performers and piece as kris and sheath, mask and dancer, or puppet and dhalang
Echoes of the Past: The Marimba Sencilla in Chiapas : An Exploratory Study of a Diatonic Marimba Tradition
The marimba is the (“traditional”) instrument par excellence in the Mexican state of Chiapas. Its current practices nowadays may range between participative and presentative performances, while its repertoire drifts between popular genres, such as música ranchera and bolero, along with contemporary music and jazz. Its roots and representativeness are such that it would give the impression of being omnipresent in the soundscape of the state. Nonetheless, there are two different kinds of marimba in Chiapas: on the one hand, the marimba doble –chromatic–, which is widely visible and, no doubt, the cultural symbol of the state; and, on the other hand, the marimba sencilla –diatonic–, whose status and visibility are almost non-existent. Whereas the marimba doble has found a niche within ethnomusicology research, the marimba sencilla has been utterly ignored, having been at times even considered to be extinct in the state. Notwithstanding, it continues to be not only present inside the state, but also an essential part of the identity of several social groups. This research focuses on such diatonic marimba tradition. Based on the information gathered during several research stays in the area, it attempts to offer a general scope of the dissemination and functioning, as well as of the various sociocultural interrelations of this musical tradition in the state of Chiapas. At the same time, being the first scientific research that is focused exclusively on this musical tradition, it aims to offer some groundwork for the development of future research which grant access to a deeper understanding of this musical tradition
Particle-filter tracking of sounds for frequency-independent 3D audio rendering from distributed B-format recordings
Six-Degree-of-Freedom (6DoF) audio rendering interactively synthesizes spatial audio signals for a variable listener perspective based on surround recordings taken at multiple perspectives distributed across the listening area in the acoustic scene. Methods that rely on recording-implicit directional information and interpolate the listener perspective without the attempt of localizing and extracting sounds often yield high audio quality, but are limited in spatial definition. Methods that perform sound localization, extraction, and rendering typically operate in the time-frequency domain and risk introducing artifacts such as musical noise. We propose to take advantage of the rich spatial information recorded in the broadband time-domain signals of the multitude of distributed first-order (B-format) recording perspectives. Broadband time-variant signal extraction retrieving direct signals and leaving residuals to approximate diffuse and spacious sounds is less of a quality risk, and likewise is the broadband re-encoding to enhance spatial definition of both signal types. To detect and track direct sound objects in this process, we combine the directional data recorded at the single perspectives into a volumetric multi-perspective activity map for particle-filter tracking. Our technical and perceptual evaluation confirms that this kind of processing enhances the otherwise limited spatial definition of direct-sound objects of other broadband but signal-independent virtual loudspeaker object (VLO) or Vector-Based Intensity Panning (VBIP) interpolation approaches
