Exploring the relationship between spatial ability, individual characteristics and academic performance of first-year students in a French engineering school
No full textInternational audienceThis study is concerned with spatial visualisation and its possible inferences as a necessary ability in French engineering education. It is completed as part of a French research programme, which aims at better understanding how multi-purpose 3-D modelling software is used by learners at different levels of schooling. Spatial ability may be measured thanks to paper tests and predicts choices and success in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education and professions. It is often described as an ability composed of two factors, namely spatial orientation and spatial visualisation. The latter can be further developed into mental rotation and mental transformation. In order to evaluate the spatial visualisation skills of first-year students in a French engineering school specialised in mechanics, the Revised Purdue Spatial Visualization Tests: Visualization of Rotations, the Mental Rotation Test, which both aim at measuring mental rotation, and the Mental Cutting Test, which aims at measuring mental transformation, were administered to 137 engineering freshmen in September 2018. This data collection was completed with a selection of demographics and academic assessment scores. The purpose of this article is to explore, by carrying out an analysis of variance, how these students’ spatial visualisation skills can be related to individual characteristics and how they contribute to academic performance

Réfugiés climatiques, migrants économiques ou fuyant les guerres, naufragés de la Méditerranée, apatrides, exilés, ces figures aiguës des crises mondiales de notre planète heurtent notre conscience de l’altérité, nos valeurs, nos idéologies, notre tolérance, nos démocraties. Comment parler de ces invisibles, de ces humains en errance, de leurs projets, de leurs vies, de leurs inscriptions, provisoires ou définitives, dans un pays européen, sur un sol qui ne les désire pas ? Relayées par les médias, les migrations sont devenues des sujets d’écriture à part entière dans tous les genres littéraires, pour les adultes comme pour les enfants. Leur réélaboration des littératures francophones post-coloniales et migrantes ainsi que leur hybridité imposent l’idée d’une dynamique de la déterritorialisation. Ce volume tente d’interroger les formes d’écriture et les discours qui définissent les trajectoires individuelles, mais aussi les conceptions de la nation, du divers et de l’universel. Qui voit ? Qui raconte ? Qui accueille ? Qui dénonce ? Du côté du roman pour adultes et pour enfants, ce sont les formes polyphoniques, dystopiques ou hospitalières qui tentent de saisir la figure du migrant, tandis que l’album pose la question de la représentation par l’image, stylisée ou référencée, à hauteur d’enfant. Pour le cinéma, l’interrogation porte sur l’esthétisme des images chargées de dire l’à- côté et l’à-présent, tandis que le théâtre nous plonge dans une errance géopoétique. Le migrant est-il dès lors une figure de la conquête et de l’aventure ? Ou l’expression des tragiques contemporains
A TRANSFER PRINCIPLE: FROM PERIODS TO ISOPERIODIC FOLIATIONS
No full textInternational audienceWe classify the possible closures of leaves of the isoperiodic foliation defined on the Hodge bundle over the moduli space of genus g ≥ 2 curves and prove that the foliation is ergodic on those sets. The results derive from the connectedness properties of the fibers of the period map defined on the Torelli cover of the moduli space. Some consequences on the topology of Hurwitz spaces of primitive branched coverings over elliptic curves are also obtained
TOWARDS LOGARITHMIC GLSM: THE r-SPIN CASE
No full textInternational audienceIn this article, we establish the logarithmic foundation for compactifying the moduli stacks of the gauged linear sigma model using stable log maps of [16, 2, 27]. We then illustrate our method via the key example of Witten's r-spin class to construct a proper moduli stack with a reduced perfect obstruction theory whose virtual cycle recovers the r-spin virtual cycle of Chang-Li-Li [14]. Indeed, our construction of the reduced virtual cycle is built upon the work of [14] by appropriately extending and modifying the Kiem-Li cosection [38] along certain logarithmic boundary. In the subsequent article [20], we push the technique to a general situation. One motivation of our construction is to fit the the gauged linear sigma model in the broader setting of Gromov-Witten theory so that powerful tools such as virtual localization [26] can be applied. A project [18, 19] along this line is currently in progress leading to applications including computing locus of holomorphic differentials [17], and calculating higher genus Gromov-Witten invariants of quintic threefolds [29, 30]

No full textLast month, Pakistani Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan was ousted in a parliamentary no-confidence vote, ending several weeks of political crises. Khan had faced public discontent with his mismanagement of the economy and foreign policy – which were combined with a growingly authoritarian style of governance. The removal from office of the former PM – who used every available means, mostly both unconstitutional and illegal, to stay in power – trough parliamentary proceedings was made possible by Supreme Court action. The phenomenon was widely described as ‘a step forward for Pakistan’s democracy’. Nevertheless, there is a common understanding among experts that the army top brass played a crucial role in toppling Khan’s government. Timing the Size Risk Premia
No full textInternational audienceIn this paper, we implement a bivariate Markov-Regime-Switching (MRS) model to filter time-varying size risk premia relying on five international equity markets. Our statistical frame-work identifies two endogenous size states exhibiting distinct characteristics. The upward (downward) size state is characterized by strongly positive (low or negative) size spreads, and is positively (negatively) correlated with the lagged changes of the Composite Leading Indicator (CLI).These results hold for all the considered markets, time intervals, and are robust to alternative factor sets used to adjust for risk. They directly challenge the statistical fluke hypothesis stating that the size effect may be a chance result.Dans cet article, nous implémentons un modèle Markov-Regime-Switching (MRS) bivarié pour filtrer les primes de risque qui varient dans le temps en nous appuyant sur cinq marchés internationaux. Notre cadre statistique identifie deux états de taille endogènes présentant des caractéristiques distinctes. L'état de taille haute (basse) est caractérisé par des écarts de taille fortement positifs (faibles ou négatifs) et est corrélé positivement (négativement) aux changements retardés de l'indicateur composite avancé (CLI).Ces résultats sont valables pour tous les marchés et intervalles de temps considérés, et sont robustes aux autres ensembles de facteurs utilisés pour ajuster le risque. Ils remettent directement en cause l'hypothèse « hasard » statistique selon laquelle l'effet de taille peut être un résultat aléatoire
