Fred Manville Taylor and the Origins of the Term “Say's Law”
International audienceAbstract The term “Say's Law” was introduced in the twentieth century by an American economist, Fred Manville Taylor. To this date, no research has thoroughly investigated how the term came to be and what it really meant in Taylor's writings. This paper aims to examine how Taylor defined and used it. Drawing upon Taylor's publications and archival sources, we show that Taylor coined the term in direct reference to Jean-Baptiste Say's writings. Simply put, Say's Law was defined by Taylor as the principle that “total demand must in the long run coincide with the total product or output of goods produced for the market.” Taylor never defined Say's Law as “the impossibility of demand deficiency as a cause of recession.” Like Say, Taylor acknowledged that general demand deficiency could cause economic crises. In such scenarios, public expenditures could have expansionary effects, a position that Say also supported. Taylor rightly credited Say with the earliest and clearest formulation of the law of outlets (loi des débouchés), and in doing so he correctly interpreted the essence of Say's thinking
Introducing the Chiral Constrained α‐Trifluoromethylalanine in Aib Foldamers to Control, Quantify and Assign the Helical Screw‐Sense**
International audienceOligomers of α-aminoisobutyric acid (Aib) are achiral peptides that adopt 310 helical structures with equal population of left- and right-handed conformers. The screw-sense preference of the helical chain may be controlled by a single chiral residue located at one terminus. 1H and 19F NMR, X-ray crystallography and circular dichroism studies on new Aib oligomers show that the incorporation of a chiral quaternary α-trifluoromethylalanine at their N-terminus induces a reversal of the screw-sense preference of the 310-helix compared to that of a non-fluorinated analogue having an l-α-methyl valine residue. This work demonstrates that, among the many particular properties of introducing a trifluoromethyl group into foldamers, its stereo-electronic properties are of major interest to control the helical screw sense. Its use as an easy-to-handle 19F NMR probe to reliably determine both the magnitude of the screw-sense preference and its sign assignment is also of remarkable interest

Low Complex Methods for Robust Channel Estimation in Doubly Dispersive Environments
International audienceWireless communications play a significant role in facilitating several mobile applications like unmanned aerial vehicles, high-speed railway, and vehicular communications. Particularly, the concept of connected vehicles brings a new level of connectivity to vehicles. Along with novel on-board computing and sensing technologies, vehicular networks serve as a key enabler of intelligent transportation systems and smart cities. However, in such environments, the propagation medium between the network nodes is highly time-varying leading to considerable reliability challenges. Ensuring communication reliability by the means of accurate channel estimation in such environments is very important. Initially, vehicular communications standards apply the basic least square (LS) estimation that is not enough for the dynamic vehicular environment. Moreover, the frame structure has low pilot density, making channel tracking a difficult task to achieve, especially in high mobility scenarios. Conventional estimators either employ data subcarriers besides pilots in the estimation process, or the estimated channel and noise statistics. Therefore they suffer from significant performance degradation due to high error probability resulting from hard symbol demapping and the sensitivity against the change in the employed channel statistics. The motivation behind this paper is to overcome this challenge by proposing a low complex and robust channel estimation scheme based on truncated discrete Fourier transform (T-DFT) that updates the channel estimates using DFT interpolation without the need for data subcarriers decisions and the estimated channel statistics. Moreover, further performance improvement can be achieved by considering temporal averaging on top of T-DFT estimation. Analytical and simulation results carried out using different vehicular channel models reveal the performance superiority of the proposed schemes compared to conventional estimators while recording a significant decrease in computational complexity and execution time
