    No full text
Dio aktivnosti proveden je u sklopu projekta RED – Rimska ekonomija u Dalmaciji Hrvatske zaklade za znanost (IP-11-2013-3973).A series of field and geophysical surveys were carried out in September 2017 on multiple sites on the island of Rab, in particular within Lopar peninsula, where trial excavations have also been conducted. The activities were carried out thanks to the collaboration of the Institute of archaeology in Zagreb (Dr. A. Konestra), the Institute of Archaeology of Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University in Warsaw (Dr. hab. F. Welc, geophysical measurements and data processing) and the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb (A. Dugonjić). All sites included in the activities are of Roman - late Roman date and of probable rural-productive character. Thanks to the interdisciplinary approach, data gathered allows to shed light on the sites' extent, chronology and inter-site relations. Part of the activities were carried out within the framework of project RED – Roman economy in Dalmatia of the Croatian science foundation (IP-11-2013-3973). Geophysical surveys, including Ground - Penetrating Radar (GPR) and the magnetic (gradiometer) method, were conducted on the sites Za Markovićem (Konestra et al. 2017), Lukovac (Čaušević-Bully, Bully 2014) and in six areas within Podšilo bay on Lopar (Fig. 1). On the basis of their results, a trial trench has been positioned at the Podkućine site (Area 1) (Fig. 4), yielding architecture and stratigraphic remains of the eastern section of a quadrangular 11 x 11 m sized building. Small finds suggest the construction and use of the building within the 4th - 6th c., while the find of a column base indicates the possibility of the existence of a porch or colonnade (Fig. 5). Prospections carried out at two other locations within Podšilo bay (Areas 3 and 5) (Fig. 3), resulted in definition of two rectangular structures on the northern slopes of the bay and, nearby a previously excavated pottery kiln (Lipovac Vrkljan, Šiljeg 2012), the badly preserved remains of another kiln. Field survey on the shores in the Barbat area located a scatter of pottery finds, probably pertaining to a coastal settlement of late Roman date and destroyed by later infrastructural activities

Time se uništava i dio lokaliteta. The Ilok ‒ Krstbajer site is located in the eastern part of the town, about 200 m from the border crossing between Ilok (Croatia) and Bačka Palanka (Serbia). The site was partially destroyed during the exploitation of sand for the construction purposes in 2011, so Ilok Municipal Museum in cooperation with the Institute of Archaeology carried out the rescue archaeological excavation. Between 2015 and 2017 three research seasons were conducted. The excavated area covers approximately 84 m2. Within this area, 188 graves and part of prehistoric (Sopot) object were explored. The archaeological context, artefacts and 14C analysis date the use of the cemetery between the end of 12th and the transition from the 15th to the 16th century. These burials most probably belong to the parish cemetery around the church of St. Helen the Queen

Mala (Nova) Pećina cave is located in Croatia, in the Dalmatian Hinterland (Dalmatinska Zagora), a mountainous region which is the contact zone between the eastern Adriatic coast and the interior. The excavations in Mala Pećina uncovered an Early and Late Neolithic cave site that might be key for a better understanding of the relationship between the coastal groups and the communities of the western Balkan interior. This paper aims to present the finds and contextual data from the 2016 excavations and the consequent 2017 study season. It presents an account of the pottery and lithic assemblages along with the zooarchaeological and archaeobotanical data from the cave. The preliminary evidence suggests that the cave was not used as a long term dwelling but rather as a temporary shelter, either for groups that were moving through the mountains or for groups that visited the cave for short term activities. The excavations have also shown a possible distinction between the use of the cave in the Early Neolithic, when people dwelled there and possibly engaged in ritual activities, and the Late Neolithic, when it was mostly used by shepherds. Mala Pećina is therefore particularly important as it offers the potential to better understand the interactions between the coast and the hinterland during the Neolithic.Špilja Mala (Nova) pećina smještena je u planinskome području dalmatinskoga zaleđu koje predstavlja dodirnu zonu između istočne jadranske obale i unutrašnjosti.

During 2017 excavations we completed a research on the thermae where we discovered another apse with white mosaic floor (partly destroyed in Late Antiquity, on the southern part with a grave) that probably belonged to the tepidarium. On the northern part of the caldarium we excavated a kiln for the thermae. In one of its fills we found olive pits, used as kiln’s fuel. That way, owners used good combustible material and disposed a waste product from olive oil production. Between thermae and building with a portico on the northeast of the villa we discovered a large communication, entering a villa from the west and proceeding into the villa all the way in the eastern production part. The communication is wide enough to allow the passing of the wagon. It ends with a large entrance and stone doorstep on the north of the area where mola olearia was found. We assume that olives for oil production were brought here with wagons using this communication. On the north of the thermae and the passage, there was a building with a portico facing east where we assume a courtyard was positioned. It had few construction phases visible in different construction techniques of the walls. A northern wall of the building was found too, probably defining northern limit of the main villa building on the site. The thermae area is 1.5‒2 m lower than production area and it is possible it had another floor for living. The villa was built on a slope, and it could easily have been built as a terrace building which allowed openness, airiness and lighting of certain spaces and good views of the valley. The cisterns and a large pond are positioned on the north where the hill rises to use the terrain inclination. In the middle part of the southern part of the villa, under huge drywall, large space with a central column was discovered. Several construction phases are noticed. There is a layer with early Roman material under some of the walls that will be excavated in 2018. On the southwest of the cisterns we started with large drywall removal in order to prepare that area for excavation in April 2018 and to approach the drywall behind the mill. We found many amphora fragments, the largest part with African and East Mediterranean origin (Africana I, Africana II (IIC), Africana III, Spathea, Keay 35A, Keay 62, LR 1, 2, 3, 4, Cnidian, Agora F 65-66), few Adriatic amphorae Dressel 2-4, a fondo piatto and collo ad imbuto; gallic and hispanic examples are presented with minor number of fragments. Significant amount of different ARS vessels (H 9A, 31, 52B, 61B, 68, 82) and African cooking ware (H 23, 185, 196), was found too, late African lamp, LRC (Hayes 3F) as well but not in larger quantity. Among earlier material we found thin walled pottery, italic sigillata and ESB (Hayes F 60, 80). With few fragments Pannonian pottery is presented too (marbled, PGW), ICW (Illlirian cooking ware, ICW 1. type 3.4), dated probably in the 2nd century. Cooking vessels and dolia were found too. Different stamps on tegulae were found too, major part belonging to Pansiana and a part of the stone inscription, later than the 3rd century

Within the project “Velebit – Cultural landscape of Sub-Velebit Lika” nine sites and several positions with archaeological indicators have been surveyed. The sites are located in the area between Senj and Karlobag (Lika–Senj County) while their chronologies stretch from Prehistory to the late Middle Ages. Apart from reconnaissance, several sites have been surveyed with a drone, enabling the creation of orthophoto plans and 3D models. The results of this year’s campaign allowed checking the data known from bibliography and, on several sites the current situation does not match previously published data, underlining the utility of such surveys

Settlement continuity at Sušine site near Virje (North Croatia) throughout the Middle Ages

The work discusses archaeological material from two archaeological units excavated within trench S-8 at the site of Virje-Sušine. On the basis of detailed analysis of fragments of pottery vessels and several metal objects, two horizons of settlement were recognized at this site during the Middle Ages: earlier - second half of the 8th and beginning of the 9th centuries and later - 11th century and the beginning of the 12th century. In the earlier horizon processing of iron ore and smelting were essential economic activities at the site

All the way to the South? Traces of contact between Jastorf and the La Tène culture periphery of South Pannonia

    Get PDF
Variants of Kugelfibeln present in the graves of the Iapodian community in the Una valley are distinguished by particular features, not found on their analogies from the neighbouring areas in south Pannonia. Closer analogies however do exist, but they are found further north, in the area of the Jastorf culture. Also, a similarity between the so-called fibulae with nut-shaped bow (Nußbügelfibeln) and the „Dänische“ Kugelfibeln has been suggested by some authors. The interpretations usually emphasize the importance of amber trade routes, since it is a material featured prominently in Iapodic graves. The grave assemblages with the mentioned types are analyzed on the basis of chronology, typology and provenance, with a critical look on the chronology proposed by Z. Marić.The conclusions can provide insights on the various routes of trade or movement of people and influences that shaped the material culture of the autochthonous communities situated on the periphery of La Tène culture. The finds illustrate them as rather open to northern influences, which corresponds to their position on the North-South communication axis

The early Christian complex in Doci near Vitina: the results of the revised archaeological research

The site of the basilica in Doci was excavated for the first time in 1956. The revised research was organised in 2015 in a campaign of field training organized for the students of archaeology from the University of Mostar. The results of the revised archaeological research have provided completely new insights into the condition of this sacral complex. The finding of the fragments of church furniture eliminated speculation about the possibility of the existence of wooden furniture. It was confirmed that Room D had the function of a baptistery, which, as in many churches of this type, was located on the north side. Tomb 2 and Tomb 3 were found too. It was discovered that the wall between the naos and the vestibule was bent for the presence of Tomb 2. In the vestibule a bench beside the south wall was found. Antique spolia as a building material were recorded in the late antique graves (the same as on the Šipkova Glavica site). It was also shown that the ground plan published in 1959 was relatively modified. The most important result is the discovery of the vaulted tomb (Tomb 2). The Early Christian complex was built above it in various phases

At the archaeological excavations carried out at the site of Velike Hlebine near the present-day settlement of Hlebine in Podravina (Croatian Drava River Basin; Koprivnica-Križevci County), for 15 working days in the period from September 25 to October 11 in 2017, two trenches were opened with a total surface area of 884.81 m2 (Fig. 1). The trenches were carefully selected and precisely placed according to the results of geophysical investigation carried out over an area of one hectare, with the aim of acquiring data about the recognition and appearance of parts of smelting workshops and corresponding elements, as well as the appearance of settlement structures from various archaeological periods. In the excavated worksite complex for smelting iron ore, large and small pits with baked bottoms were found (Figs. 2–3), filled with smelting waste (Fig. 5), whose primary function may be related to the preparation or processing of raw materials and resources necessary for performing this activity. On the basis of the circumstances of discovery, in which it was recognized that individual elements of the workshop were covered by alluvium containing pottery fragments from the early Middle Ages, it was concluded that the workshop functioned in the period between the late Roman period and the early Middle Ages, as was confirmed by radiocarbon dates
