Why We Should Reuse Wastewater
As population and industry grow, the need to reuse wastewater is growing. Aquifers are often the dominant water supplies to surrounding areas. The levels of those aquifers are declining each year. Water loss affects many things like water wells, lakes, and rivers. Lakes and rivers that are used as water sources are seeing a decline in levels. Low water levels and drought occur because of the changing water cycle. Heavy rain and runoff can help refill lakes and rivers; however precipitation does not always fall back on the area that it evaporated from. By reusing wastewater, we will be saving our fresh water sources from depletion. By reusing wastewater for things like cleaning, irrigation, and fire suppression, we will save our fresh water sources. Reused wastewater can be treated enough to be drinking water, but not everyone will be open to that idea. Reused wastewater can also recharge an aquifer when natural recharging cannot keep up with the amount being used
DETECTION AND OCCURRENCE OF NERODIA HARTERI (SERPENTES: COLUBRIDAE) IN AN UPPER PORTION OF THE BRAZOS RIVER WATERSHED
Semiaquatic snakes are disproportionately impacted by habitat alteration adjacent to wetlands because of their reliance on both terrestrial and aquatic habitats. Brazos River Watersnakes, Nerodia harteri, are endemic natricines with one of the most restricted geographic ranges in North America. I quantified detection and site occupancy probabilities of N. harteri and its sympatric congeners (N. erythrogaster and N. rhombifer), as well as microhabitat selection within the Nerodia community. Within occupied transects, search effort was positively correlated with detecting N. harteri, whereas environmental and/or habitat variables were better predictors for detecting the sympatric congeners. Microhabitat selection between the three Nerodia species varied, with N. harteri selecting for riffle presence and increased canopy cover. The focal species was 97% less likely to be found in habitat characterized by bank vegetation containing saltcedar (Tamarix spp.). The results indicate the sympatric Nerodia spp. are partitioning their habitat to some degree, likely related to foraging activities. To better understand demographic trends of Nerodia harteri, long-term monitoring is needed, and habitat management — such as the preservation of riffle habitat — might be necessary to minimize the risk of continued population declines
COVID-19’s Effects on Mortality Salience, Death Anxiety, and Worldview Defense
Since late-2019, the world has been trying to overcome an invisible killer: COVID-19. With near constant reminders of the virus the knowledge that a tiny viral particle has potential to harm or even kill has become overwhelming for many. Terror Management Theory (TMT) suggests that when individuals are reminded of their own death people take part in culturally appropriate activities and defend their own culture as ways to alleviate this increased death anxiety. The current study aims to identify whether 1) reminders of COVID-19 prime death thoughts, 2) reminders of COVID-19 increase death anxiety, and 3) increased death anxiety from COVID-19 reminders also increase worldview defense. The results have provided evidence that thinking about COVID-19 does not prime death anxiety reducing behaviors
“Everyone Off the Ship”: Children Becoming Civic Minded in a Summer Literacy Program
Increased emphasis in recent years on reading and/or math achievement have sidelined social studies teaching in elementary education (Boyle-Baise, Hsu, Johnson, Serriere, & Stewart, 2012; Heafner & Fitchett, 2012; McMurrer, 2007; Shapiro & Brown, 2018). When teachers do address civics education, instruction typically sets up students for future citizenship duties, with a focus on rules and laws (Moyer, 1981; Swalwell & Payne, 2019). This traditional banking model of schooling (Freire, 1970/2009) makes children the receivers of knowledge and overlooks what they can do already (Swalwell & Payne, 2019). Efforts are needed to rethink “civics education as an emancipatory experience in which children learn to actively negotiate their identity and sense of belonging” (Berson & Berson, 2019, p. 75). Framed by posthuminist theories, the work of Freire, and problem-based learning, our research examined the experiences of children participating in a summer literacy program in Tennessee as they developed awareness, sense of belonging, and engagement, demonstrating that they were citizens bringing about change in their own community. Findings and implications for practice are discussed
Reverse engineering a bronze cannon from the La Belle shipwreck
The goal of this project was to scan and reverse engineer one of three bronze cannons (41MG86 - 11900-1) recovered from the La Belle excavation, which is currently on exhibit at the Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin, Texas. A freeform computer aided design (CAD) model was generated based upon the topology of the three-dimensional (3-D) mesh in Geomagic Design X with a desired maximum deviation of 0.1 mm between the model and the mesh. Deviations were calculated in Geomagic Control X using the surface model as the reference data, and the mesh as the measured data. A custom patch network was subsequently designed using a series of iterative revisions until the whole of the surface model met with the specified tolerance. The 3-D surface model of the cannon will be replicated in a variety of media at variable scales for use in exhibits and for educational and promotional material for the Texas Historical Commission, the Republic of France, and their partner museums

The field trip will start at Holiday Park,near Benbrook,southwest of Fort Worth,Texas, and will end at the Mineral Wells Fossil Park, west of Minerals Wells, Texas.
Racial Diversity of Texas School Teachers
There is a growing gap between the racial demographics of public-school teachers and their students. Teachers with demographic backgrounds similar to a school’s student population are often successful, particularly in Title 1 schools with high proportions of minority students; however, teacher turnover is high. The students in Texas public schools are a growing minority-majority population. Changes in the student body racial composition and other school-related variables could influence teacher workforce demographics. The focus of discussion of this quantitative research study is to determine the factors that predict the racial diversity of teachers in Texas high schools. The research questions addressed were: (1) What factors predict the racial diversity of faculty in Texas high schools? (2) and What factors predict the change of racial teacher diversity in Texas high schools? Using predictor variables identified in the research, and then attained from Texas Education Association public database; was analyzed using regression modeling to check for relationships. In question one of this study, the key predictor of racial diversity for teachers is increased racial diversity of students. Question two of this study, was the change score between 2008-2009 and 2018-2019, findings show that there is inconclusive evidence that need further study, because of the quantity of variables that affect teacher movement. Results of the study, reveal the importance of revising teacher and student racial diversity polices in today’s Texas public high schools, in order to meet the increasing diversity of the student body
