Cross-modal perception of identity by sound and taste in bottlenose dolphins

    Get PDF
While studies have demonstrated concept formation in animals, only humans are known to label concepts to use them in mental simulations or predictions. To investigate whether other animals use labels comparably, we studied cross-modal, individual recognition in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) that use signature whistles as labels for conspecifics in their own communication. First, we tested whether dolphins could use gustatory stimuli and found that they could distinguish between water and urine samples, as well as between urine from familiar and unfamiliar individuals. Then, we paired playbacks of signature whistles of known animals with urine samples from either the same dolphin or a different, familiar animal. Dolphins investigated the presentation area longer when the acoustic and gustatory sample matched than when they mismatched. This demonstrates that dolphins recognize other individuals by gustation alone and can integrate information from acoustic and taste inputs indicating a modality independent, labeled concept for known conspecifics

The Effects of Esports on Sport-Confidence and Imagery in Athletes

    Get PDF
With the growing popularity of esports, athletes may be able to experience potential cognitive and performance-related benefits as a result of watching others play esports. In the current study, student athletes were randomly assigned to watch a sport esport video or a control esport video and then completed measures of sport-confidence and imagery. It was predicted that participants in the sport esport video group would score higher than the control esport video group in the cognitive efficiency and resilience aspects of sport-confidence, as well as the cognitive general, motivational general-mastery, and motivational general-arousal domains of imagery. The overall results did not support these hypotheses, with the means between groups not statistically differing. Nevertheless, future directions regarding video game use and athletic performance are discussed

Goal Setting: Impacting Teacher Candidate Growth in Residency Practicum prior to Student Teaching

    Get PDF
Educator preparation programs and school districts continue to strive to meet their commitment to better prepare future teachers for entry into the field of education. For more than 100 years, beginning as a normal school, a midwest university has had a strong reputation for the preparation of teachers. After a significant revision to the curriculum to one driven by competencies, this university increased field experiences for teacher candidates, including a culminating year out called Residency Practicum and Student Teaching. Over the course of the undergraduate program, candidates work toward achievement of competencies assigned throughout the coursework and aligned to state standards. The focus of this article is on teacher candidates identifying and reflecting upon competency-based goals for the Residency Practicum. The purpose of the study is to gain the teacher candidates’ perspectives on the competencies they identified most often as goals for improvement throughout the Residency Practicum and the percentage of teacher candidates who grew in proficiency through self-assessed ratings of the competencies

A Content Analysis of Educators’ Perceptions of Anti-Black Bias: Implications for Black Students

    Get PDF
Recent research and scholarship have highlighted anti-Black bias in today’s schools. This study explored the perceptions that in-service educators had regarding the ways anti-Black bias is represented in schools. This basic qualitative study included one open-ended question that investigated school personnel’s perspectives regarding how anti-Black bias is represented in the schools. A qualitative content analysis was performed on the open-ended question. Participants included 18 in-service educators enrolled in a summer multicultural special education course that is a required course in the department’s special education master’s program. Results from the content analysis yielded 47 unique statements from 18 responses. From the 47 unique statements, four main categories were established that described anti-Black bias in school: normalizing Whiteness, denial of opportunity, over disciplining, and teacher labeling. Implications for educators and administrators are discussed

Doctoral Studies as Learning to Rename the World

    Get PDF
The reflective experience documented in this paper engages with doctoral learning from Freire’s (1968/2000) conceptual lens of naming the world. Written from the narrative lens of the supervisor, it considers how doctoral level studies in education can position both the supervisor and the candidates as agents actively reconstructing their understanding of the world and their place in it. The doctoral journey is viewed as praxis compelling researchers to expand their frames for reading the world, accommodating the other, including multiple voices and thus demonstrating commitment to a global and yet constantly contested notion of citizenship

Differences Between African American and White Males in Grades 6-8: Comparative Evidence from Selected Texas Rural Schools

    Get PDF
The academic achievement gap among Black males in grades 6-8 across Texas is a growing concern. Based on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR), secondary data from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) was used to evaluate scores from a sample of Texas rural schools. In this quantitative, non-experimental methods study, the dependent variable examined was the STAAR reading score at the “meets grade level,” and the independent dichotomous variables examined were: race, whether or not the student was classified in one of the following groups: ECD, at-risk, and special education. Academic trends from the 2017-2019 academic school years suggested there were few statistical differences in STAAR reading performance between the Black and White male students in the years examined in this study. These findings will benefit teachers and administrators of K-12 schools in the selected districts. Future recommendations are discussed

Predictors of Student Knowledge of Counselor Identity: Human Services & Related Mental Health Courses

    Get PDF
Professional organizations and the field at large have made great strides towards solidifying the professional identities of mental health professionals. Despite these efforts, public knowledge of different types of helping professionals remains limited. Public understanding of helping professionals’ identities is critical to mental health literacy, and has a significant impact on health outcomes. Post-secondary education provides many students with exposure to information regarding types of helping professionals, and their scope of practice. This expansion study engages students completing college-level courses to clarify those variables that predict student knowledge and perceived scope of practice of a variety of counselors
