    Does attachment mediate PTSD and suicidality in a sample of Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) combat veterans?

    Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and suicidality is a growing concern in the US due to the consistent rise in attempted and completed suicides in the veteran community. Consequently, continued scholarship to delve into the relationship between these two variables is imperative. This study used a sample of 65 treatment-seeking combat veterans who deployed in support of the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT). We conducted 12 PROCESS simple mediation models and analyzed suicidality, generalized anxiety, and depression’s relationship indirectly through attachment avoidance and attachment anxiety to PTSD. Next, we repeated the model, making suicidality the dependent variable, with PTSD, generalized anxiety, and depression indirectly through attachment avoidance and attachment anxiety. Lastly, in an attempt to understand the relationship between suicidality and PTSD, we conducted two parallel mediation models. The results indicate attachment dimensions and PTSD may be reciprocal, that is, working as a feedback loop, which have clinical implications

    Social-Emotional Learning: A Literature Review

    ABSTRACT Social-emotional learning targets the development of positive interpersonal relationships, empathy, emotional regulation, healthy identities, personal/collective goal orientation, and responsibility in the decision-making process (CASEL Organization, 2021). Schools, however, have the main objective of ensuring that academic measures are met. Linking social-emotional learning and skills to the school system’s principal goal, academic results, can facilitate the greater implementation of such programs within the school setting. This systematic literature review examined the relationship between social-emotional learning programs in schools and academic outcomes, such as grades, test scores, or grade point averages. Secondly, it explored the relationship between students’ social-emotional skills and these academic outcomes. After the predetermined inclusionary and exclusionary criteria were implemented, a total of 36 articles were determined applicable to this systematic literature review

    C-H on the Oxo Ferryl Wheel: Comparison of Pyridine and Imidazole-Substituted Ligands for C-H Activation and Functionalization

    The selective and efficient transformation of hydrocarbon feedstocks is of high value for industry and research. While Shilov-type organometallic methods have facilitated this goal, systems designed after nature’s use of cheap and abundant iron-based enzymes are desired for wider-scale applications. This work establishes hydrocarbon oxidation efficiency of synthetic pyridine-based ligands (BPMEN, BPMPN) compared to commercially available TPA with in situ generated catalysts. Literature studies of traditionally synthesized BPMEN systems and initial in situ studies offered evidence for enhanced reactivity (TON) as compared to TPA. Expansion to a propyl backbone to produce BPMPN tested the increased chelate ring size’s impact on reactivity as compared to BPMEN. Optimized catalysis yielded higher TON efficiency with BPMEN as well as greater selectivity compared to TPA across all substrates and conditions. Utilization of the BPMPN architecture not only offered lower TON as compared to the BPMEN precursor, but resulted in excessively low product yields below that of TPA, often near or below the limit of quantification. We next turned to addressing the lack of imidazole-substituted models through ligands BItCHEN and nBuBIMEN. Translating the previously established BItCHEN structure to our simple and modular synthetic approach ultimately proved unsuccessful. Therefore, we focused on nBuBIMEN, established by our collaborator. Preliminary investigations indicated that while this ligand was less effective for oxidation, epoxidation capability was near or above that of BPMEN. Interestingly, nBuBIMEN also showed evidence of a more stable oxo-species intermediate, leading to computational assessment of oxo stability across these scaffolds

    This paper is a supporting document that discusses the conceptual and technical aspects of the artworks in the accompanying exhibition, HOME/SICK. The work in the exhibition consists of selections from different series of work that are inspired by related subject matter. The content driving the work responds to anecdotal experiences of people living in communities near oil refineries and chemical processing plants and how events at these facilities affect their way of life. Many times, these are communities of color which strive to voice concerns and protect homes from harmful toxins. In one series, original and appropriated imagery serves as a foundation for screen printed and collaged elements, creating a layered image that is shown behind reclaimed windows. Another series consists of editions of monoprints made from plastic shopping bags. Single use plastics are petroleum-based products with a variety of chemical compounds added to bestow useful material properties. They are easily used, discarded, and forgotten. We forget or intentionally ignore some of the harmful consequences of their mass manufacture and disposal.
