Coexistence of Three Stream Dwelling Cyprinid: the Blacktail (Cyprinella venusta), Blackspot (Notropis atrocaudalis) and Sabine (N. sabinae), in Urban Streams in East Texas

    Get PDF
We examined the population structure of three sympatric shiners Blacktail shiner Cyprinella venusta Blackspot shiner Notropis atrocaudalis and Sabine shiner N sabinae in the La Nana Banita stream complex system in east Texas during three seasons of 2022 and three habitat types ( riffles, and runs) Overall, the three species occurred together in similar habitats during the spring season when habitats were connected Despite the severe 2022 summer fall drought, populations of Blacktail Shiner dominated in the stream habitats However, Sabine shiner, which showed affinity for riffles, declined in occurrence in summer and fall, when riffles were absent due to drought conditions

A deeper understanding of noise effects on cetaceans

    Get PDF
Recent research with cetaceans under human care is illuminating just how dolphins are affected by human-made noise both in terms of their ability to cooperate as well as their ability to habituate to such noise. This research is providing granular detail to regulators assessing the problems associated with anthropogenic effects and is highlighting a role for behavior/cognition research in conservation

Tharp’s Funnel: Understanding the Present through an Understanding of the Past

    Get PDF
Inspired by the changes precipitated by 2020 and 2021, the authors introduce Tharp\u27s (1994) Funnel and Filters of Development and his emphasis on ethnogenetic analysis as a framework to understand current conditions and events. In doing so, we aim to provide a lens to better grasp the issues that our nation faces and propose it as a tool to disrupt the ongoing pattern of social injustice. This framework is introduced with a discussion on some of the unfortunate, yet significant, events that have unfolded in 2020 and 2021, followed by an explanation of Tharp\u27s Funnel and its application to contemporary events. Lastly, we conclude with a discussion on how ethnogenetic analysis can be used as a framework for culturally-responsive pedagogy, and contextualize both global and educational issues

The Effects of Child Sexual Abuse on Children with Autism

    Get PDF
The purpose of conducting this research was to understand the effects of Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) on children with autism, and how behaviors attributed with CSA easily get mistaken as behaviors attributed with autism, leaving them more vulnerable to CSA. The research question used in this study is: How does Child Sexual abuse affect children with autism? This paper is a systematic review, which entailed using a sampling of professional and scholarly articles published in recent years to answer a question or understand a subject matter, in this context being the effects of CSA, with the focus demographic being children with autism. In searching for related articles, inclusion criteria were used that included topics such as the prevalence of child sexual abuse, the effects, and other related terms, with exclusion criteria being adult sexual abuse (sexual abuse taking place after turning eighteen). During this research, the measurement tools of PRISMA and AMSTAR were used to further assess and ensure the relevance of the articles to this research paper. As a result of the research conducted, it was deduced that children with autism are at a higher risk of being a victim of sexual abuse than a child without due to their functional impairments in social interaction and communication. Furthermore, with these findings, research indicates that individuals with ASD may require additional support, education, and protection that they are currently not receiving. The lack of research regarding the subject matter also indicates the need for more research on the subject of CSA in children with autism, of which this paper hopes to contribute to

    Cerebral Palsy and School Performance

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to inform the audience about the disability of Cerebral Palsy and what schools are doing to accommodate and/or provide appropriate interventions for academics and psychological health for best success. Schools may lack in awareness of chronic health accommodations and creation of interventions for improvement, leading to an increase in concern and distress of parents and children. Those with chronic health conditions, like Cerebral Palsy undergo many social-emotional difficulties that others might not think about. When entering a school, starting school, or transitioning back to school as an individual with a chronic health condition, it is important to consider all social, emotional, behavioral, physical, mental, and academic needs. For children, it is also important to ensure the child’s parent(s) or guardian(s) have the needs to support their child while they are going to school. These accommodations might be supplying local resources for reliable transportation, doctors that are closer to a certain part of town, or counseling support. The focus of this paper includes information on school functioning with Cerebral Palsy, social and psychological needs of students with Cerebral Palsy, description and diagnostic criteria of Cerebral Palsy, effective academic and psychological interventions, how Cerebral Palsy affects the family dynamic, assessment tools used to identify students with Cerebral Palsy, and legal and ethical considerations. The conclusion of this paper will help determine appropriate and adequate accommodations and interventions for students with the disability of Cerebral Palsy and inform others what students with Cerebral Palsy experience socially, emotionally, physically, and psychologically

Contrasting Orthophotos by Height, Overlap, and Drone

    Get PDF
Drones have recently become a mainstay for surveying and modeling of small areas of land in a cost-efficient manner. Yet there are many variables that affect the time, quality, and cost of capturing and generating such products. We look at several of these parameters and discuss the alternatives to minimize cost over a series of projects. The parameters in question include height, overlap, sensor resolution, processing time, drone costs, computer costs, processing costs, time in the field, storage, drone endurance and the likelihood of costly delays. A series of flights using different drones and flight parameters were then used to validate the hypothesis. The results indicate that for a particular need and sensor resolution there exists a curve of height vs overlap that produces similar results. Thus, selecting the point on the curve that minimizes flight time will produce the lowest cost for a series of projects

School Leaders’ Supports of Dual Language Science Teachers

    Get PDF
English learners account for 21.7% of the Texas public school system (Texas Education Agency, 2022). This qualitative study was conducted to examine how teachers of English learners in a dual language program perceived the educational supports they received affected student achievement in science. Teacher participants were asked about their experiences with administrative supports and how those supports affected their teaching and student performance. Two administrators were also interviewed for the study. The teacher participants identified administrative supports they perceived to be beneficial to student learning and to the functioning of the EL program and science classroom. The administrative supports identified included: school leaders provided resources and communicated frequently about resource needs, school leaders prioritized opportunities for lesson modeling and demonstrations, and leaders planned for and facilitated collaborative planning and data meetings with the teachers

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of administrative support on teachers in Title I schools during the Coronavirus pandemic. This study added to the knowledge base by providing information on teachers\u27 work experiences in Title I schools during the Coronavirus pandemic. This study included a review of data collected from interviews of elementary teachers in a Title 1 district. A purposeful sample of 12 teachers who worked in Title 1 elementary schools during the Coronavirus pandemic were interviewed. The interviews provided an in-depth understanding of the teachers’ perceptions on administrative support during the pandemic in Title 1 schools. The findings of this study showed that administrative support has a significant role in influencing on teachers’ perception of teaching, self-efficacy, decreasing stress, cultivating positive school culture, and lessening teacher burnout. The recommendations include ways district and school level administrators can create a collaborative learning environment where teachers and students are successful
