Improving Lankan Women’s Access to Economic Opportunities: The Business Case

    No full text
2p. This article was published by the Daily mirror as an opinion column in print and is also available online at https://www.dailymirror.lk/opinion/Improving-Lankan-women%E2%80%99s-access-to-economic-opportunities:-The-business-case/172-256785As we in Sri Lanka explore the pathways out of the current crisis, it is imperative that we acknowledge the mammoth contributions that women make to the economy, hidden and unpaid, and seriously consider how to improve their access to paid, formal economic opportunities. If the evidence is anything to go by, very few countries (if any) have achieved successful economic development without creating and leveraging fair economic opportunities for women. In East and South-East Asia, women have powered their export-led manufacturing growth; over the past three decades, Vietnam’s female labour force participation rate has consistently remained over 70%, Thailand’s over 60%, and South Korea and Indonesia’s over 50%. It isn’t just a happy coincidence that across all of Asia’s rapidly developing economies, women have access to and take up formal employment. It is generally (and fairly) assumed that equitable access to education results in equitable economic participation as well. This has unfortunately and clearly not been the case for Sri Lanka; significant investments in women’s education have not translated to economic benefits for women, nor the country. This article looks at why this is and progress made towards it

    No full text
This infographic is available in English and Sinhala. On 4 April 2023, MP Premnath Dolawatte’s private member bill to amend sections 365 and 365A of the penal code was read for the first time in parliament. This is because the LGBTQI+ community has historically been the target of harassment with the implementation of section 365 under the title “unnatural offences” and section 365A under the title “acts of gross indecency between persons”. In response to this first reading, on 17 April 2023, three petitioners appearing before the Supreme Court claimed that the private member bill was “inconsistent with one or more articles of the constitution”. On 9 May 2023, however, the Supreme Court determined that the “bill as a whole or any provision thereof is not inconsistent with the constitution”. Taking this into consideration, Manthri.lk evaluated the current penal code and the proposed amendment to the penal code

This entry includes a write-up and an infographic (both in Sinhala). On 9th August 2023, Sinhala newspapers reported on the delay of the no-confidence motion debate against Keheliya Rambukwella. Dinamina and Aruna emphasised that Sajith Premadasa was responsible for the delay in their headlines. In contrast, Lankadeepa and Mawbima highlighted that it was his party, Samagi Jana Balawegaya, rather than Premadasa personally, that was responsible.
