Government Revenue Loss due to the Sugar Tax Cut
This infographic was posted on the Public Finance Platform in English.The Special Commodity Levy (SCL) on imported sugar was reduced from LKR 50/kg to LKR 0.25/kg on the 13th of October 2020. This was intended to reduce the price of sugar in the domestic market. The cumulative loss of government revenue was over LKR 59 Bn as of December 2022 as a result of the sugar tax change. However, the reduction in the levy did not have the desired effect on the domestic market price as domestic market prices have been on the rise even after the levy reduction. The reduction in the levy did however result in substantial tax revenue being lost

This is almost seven times the unemployment compared to women of other ages. Within ages 20 and 40, women are on average four times likely to be unemployed compared to men of the same age. State sponsored maternity leave benefits costs significantly lower than other welfare programs of the government. Maternity leave benefits cost 0.5% of tax revenue as of 2021, compared to Samurdhi payments, amounting to 4.2% of tax revenue. When Sri Lanka ratified the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Maternity Protection Convention in 1952 (No. 103), it committed to the state supporting maternity leave benefits
IMF Programme: Performance Evaluation - September 2023 - Transparency Falls to Lowest Point
These infographics were posted on the Public Finance Platform and are in all three languages: English, Sinhala and Tamil.The latest update from 'IMF Tracker’ of Verité Research, an online platform which tracks the 100 identified commitments in Sri Lanka’s 17th programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), shows that Sri Lanka verifiably met only 40 of the 71 trackable commitments that were due for completion by end-September 2023.
This unveils a "twin deficit in transparency": (a) a growing lack of transparency in the progress of the programme, and (b) a growing failure to meet IMF commitments that call for increased governmental transparency

The analysis will feed into enhancing public participation and transparency in budget processes, which is urgently needed given Sri Lanka’s low performance in this respect. This set of infographics, which analyses Sri Lankan government’s progress on meeting 100 trackable IMF commitments for August 2023, creates social media engagement/public engagement, to the VR’s IMF tracker to explain the EFF-supported program and how to use the IMF Tracker (available as far as possible in all three languages). According to the August analysis, Sri Lanka has so far met 38% of IMF commitments, while 11% of the commitments are unknown, 8% are not met and 43% are pending.CIP
