Parliament Summary - September 2023

During the 8 parliament sittings, 74 written questions were asked but only 29 questions were answered. There were two motions at the adjournment time. 17 announcements were made by the Speaker during the 8 parliament sittings. The number of Bills, Orders and Regulations were 11,1 and 4 respectively. Under Private Member's Bills, there was one Incorporation Bill whereas no Bill for the public interest. There were 4 questions by the Private notice at the parliament in September 2023. 61 Points of order were raised in total, and 52 points of order were ruled as technical points of order. Only 9 were ruled as disruptive points of order in the parliament during this month. 50 statements were considered as expunged statements at the parliament. Sarath Fonseka was the most responsible MP for the expunged statements at the parliament in September 2023

The data is collected through a telephone interview and a nationwide randomised sample of around one thousand people is taken into consideration. The Mood of the Nation poll is conducted periodically by Verité Research and is based on an island wide nationally representative sample of responses. The sample and methodology are designed to limit the maximum error margin to under 3% at a 95% confidence interval, which meets the gold standard of surveys. The poll is based on an island wide nationally representative sample of responses from 1,000 plus Sri Lankan adults. The poll is conducted as a part of the syndicated survey instrument by Verité Research and the polling partner was Vanguard Survey (Pvt) Ltd. This instrument also provides other organisations the opportunity to survey the sentiments of Sri Lanka

No full textThis entry includes 8 number of write-ups and 8 number of infographics (all in Sinhala)During the months of January and February in 2023, the newspapers, Lankadeepa, Aruna, Dinamina, Mawbima and Divaina published several articles on sex crimes which contained various ethical violations.
To be more detailed, the following violations were spotted in relation to trivialization of sex crimes:
Lankdeepa on the 28th of January referred to a sexual abuse of a minor as 'sellam baduwak kireema'; Lankadeepa on the 7th of February referred to a sexual abuse as 'lokuma apalaya' while Aruna called the same incident 'amuthu thoviliyak'; Dinamina on the 8tb of February called a sexual abuse an 'amuthu banak'; Dinamina on the 22nd of February referred to a sexual abuse of a minor as a 'ambu kamata deemak'; Aruna on the 22nd of February reported of a sex crime against a police officer with a cartoon and headline which were both sensational and trivializing of the incident; and Dinamina on the 24th of February reported of a sexual abuse as 'pannagena gihin' and Divaina reported the same incident as 'rawatu', with both articles also using the word 'dooshanaya'.
Additionally, Aruna on the 15th of February reported of a sexual abuse of a minor saying 'mal kakulaka pethi sindala', which is sensational and harmful for the victim.
Moreover, on 17th of February Mawbima and Dinamina reported of a sexual abuse while indirectly revealing the identity of the victim while Ada reported the same incident without revealing any identities
