    This infographic is available in English and Sinhala.On April 5, 2024, the Order under the Value Added Tax (VAT) Act, in relation to increasing the VAT from 15% to 18%, was passed with a majority of 36 votes. The following compilation of infographics reflects the list of MPs that voted in favour, against and MPs who were absent from the vote and session. 55 votes were cast in favour of the motion, while 19 votes were cast against it. In addition, Manthri.lk found that although 62 MPs were absent from the session, 88 of the MPs who were present for the session were absent for the vote

    This presentation was created and delivered by the Parliament Research Team for the workshop organised by the Econ Team. The English version was prepared and presented by the Parliament Research Team and was subsequently translated into Sinhala and Tamil. The Sinhala version was used for the Parliament engagement workshop conducted in Matara (30th July 2024), while the Tamil version was used for the workshop held in Jaffna (16th July 2024).The presentations used by Verité Research at two parliamentary engagement workshops for Civil Society Organizations provide a comprehensive overview of key topics. These include why and how to engage with parliament, the structure of parliament sittings, and an understanding of the agenda for each session. Additionally, they cover essential tools for engaging with parliament through MPs, such as methods for asking questions, bringing attention to issues, and advocating for reform. The materials also highlight the importance of engaging through parliamentary committees, including Special Purpose Committees, Sectoral Oversight Committees, and Caucuses. These committees offer specific avenues for civil society organizations to participate and influence the legislative process

    This entry includes a write-up and two infographics which includes media violations of the suicide and helplines (both in Sinhala).On June 25, 2024, Siyatha, Hiru TV, TV Derana, and Swarnawahini television channels and on June 26, 2024, Divaina, Ada, Lankadeepa, Aruna, Mawbima, and Dinamina newspapers reported the suicide of an Advanced Level student in Ulapane. Only the Siyatha television channel and Ada newspaper included helplines in their coverage, while the others did not. Except for Hiru TV, TV Derana and Dinamina newspaper, other media reported the incident prominently in the main headlines. Siyatha TV is the only media that did not describe the method used in the suicide. TV Derana along with the Divaina, Ada and Lankadeepa newspapers reported alleged reason for the suicide. The media is advised to avoid reporting on suicides without providing helplines, stating reasons for them or describing the methods used, as these can act as a catalyst for further suicides
