Identification of the Hemodynamic Correlates of Basic Emotional States with a Mobile Functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy System
Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of a functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) system, for quantification of the similarities and differences in the spatial localization of cerebral hemodynamic activation, induced by visual presentation of neutral, negative and positive valence emotional stimuli. Method: Thirteen healthy subjects viewed neutral, pleasant and unpleasant pictures from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS) database in a block design experiment while the prefrontal cortical hemodynamic changes induced by emotional stimuli were continuously recorded with a 20 channel fNIRS system that covered the forehead region. Results: Negative valence pictures induced higher hemodynamic activity in right lateralized regions involving dorsolateral and orbitofrontal cortex, when compared to neutral and positive valence stimuli (pFDR<0.05). Each stimulus condition induced a distinct cortical activation pattern that could be identified with fNIRS. Conclusion: Our findings support the notion that different basic emotions have distinct localization and separable hemodynamic correlates in the prefrontal cortex region, which can be detected with a mobile fNIRS system. The distinct cortical hemodynamic activity patterns associated with each emotional state show the potential of fNIRS technology for decoding and differentiating basic emotions objectively and real time for future clinical and daily life applications
Assessing acceptance of augmented reality in nursing education
The Covid-19 pandemic has negatively affected every aspect of human life. In these challenging times nursing students, facing academic and psychological issues, are advised to use augmented reality applications in the field of health sciences for increasing their motivations and academic performances. The main motive of the study was to examine the acceptance status of nursing students in implementing augmented reality technology in their education and training. The study is a quantitative research study, and it uses the causalcomparative screening method. The data used in the study was collected online from 419 nursing students. The hybrid method was preferred. First, the hypotheses based on the linear relationships were defined between the variables which were then tested by the method of structural equation modeling. Second, the method of artificial neural networks was used to determine the non-linear relationships between the variables. The results show that the nursing students have a high intention of using augmented reality technology as a way of self-learning. It was also found that the most emphasized motive behind this intention is the expectation that using augmented reality technology will increase their academic performance. They also think that AR technology has many potential benefits to offer in the future. It was observed that a considerable number of students already use augmented reality technology for its usefulness and with a hedonic motivation. In conclusion, nursing students have a high acceptance of using augmented reality technology during their education and training process. Since we live in a world where e-learning and self-learning education/training have become widespread, it is estimated that students will demand augmented reality applications as a part of holistic education, and as an alternative to traditional textbooks
The role of melatonin mediated by TRPV1 channels in cisplatin applied pancrease and stomach cancer cells
Vitality of Strategic Museum Management: An Application from Turkish Museums
Collecting, protecting and presenting a diverse range of objects can be considered as one of the main purposes of the museums. Similar to many other non-profit organizations, management aspect of museums is often ignored or overlooked up until the beginning of 21st century. However, with the innovative managerial practices, impact of globalization and inter-connected entertainment sector forced the museums to integrate strategic management practices into their operations. Within this context, study aims to discover the managerial perspective of the visited-oriented museums in Turkey and explore whether they are embracing or employing strategic management principles or not. To achieve this aim, 12 semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with the museum managers. Results highlights the contemporary administrative structures of Turkish museums which yields valuable information. Numerous managerial implications and future recommendations are provided for the effective management of museums
Anesthesia Management in Bart's syndrome: A Case Report
Bart's syndrome is a genetic disorder that is also associated with epidermolysis bullosa (EB), which is characterized by congenital focal absence of the skin, mechanical bullous, and nail dystrophy. We present the anesthesia management of a male neonate with congenital localized skin absence, nail dystrophy, and ear atrophy who underwent surgery due to congenital pyloric atrophy. Palliative measures were perforemed paying attention to skin lesions in areas of rich-red peeling on the hands and feet of the patient, and standard general inhalation anesthesia was administered. As far as I could research in the English literature, this case report may be the first case report to present the management of anesthesia in a patient with Bart syndrom
Utility of immature granulocyte in severity of helicobacter pylori infection
Introduction: Helicobacter pylori infection is a chronic bacterial infection associated with some extragastric diseases as well as gastric involvements that occur most commonly worldwide. In our study, we aimed to investigate the usability of immature granulocytes as a basic indicator that can reflect the severity of helicobacter pylori inflammation, to the best of our knowledge, for the first time. Materials and methods: Patients who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy between April 2019 and April 2020 and were diagnosed with antral gastritis were included in this study. The relationship between helicobacter infection and its severity detected in gastric biopsies of patients and immature granulocyte count (IGC), immature granulocyte percentage (IG%), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and mean platelet volume (MPV) were investigated. Results: Of the 868 patients, 210 were HP negative, 658 were HP positive (218 mild HP positive, 293 moderate HP positive, and 147 severe HP positive). There were statistically significant differences between the HP negative and HP positive groups in terms of IGC, IG%, NLR, and PLR. However, IG% and IGC were not clinically useful because the median IG% (0.3 vs 0.3) and IGC (0.02 vs 0.02) were the same in the HP negative and total HP positive groups. Conclusion: In our study, IGC and IG% were not found useful to detect H. pylori intensity and severity of inflammation
The investigation of possible beneficial effects of gabapentin on adverse cardiac effects of high dose zoledronic acid: An experimental study
Zoledronic acid (ZA) is prescribed for different kinds of clinic conditions to suppress osteoclastic activity and protect bone mineral density. However, some reports claim that ZA treatment can lead to adverse cardiac events. Gabapentin (GP), a widely prescribed agent for neuropathic pain, can ameliorate some other medical agents’ cardiac side effects, through its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. This study aimed to experimentally investigate the combined effect of ZA and GP on the myocardium. Four different groups were created with rats, as follows: I. Control (n:3): investigating the normal myocardial tissue in rat genus. II. Sham (n:4): weekly intraperitoneal (i.p.) saline injection and daily 30 mg/ kg GP (oral gavage) for obtaining possible cardiac side effects of i.p. injection. III. ZA (n: 7): weekly 100 mg/kg i.p. ZA infusion for four weeks. IV. ZA+ GP (n : 7): weekly 100 mg/kg ZA (i.p.) and daily 30 mg/kg GP (oral gavage) utilized for four weeks. Histopathological examinations were made to obtain cardiac tissues at the end of the four weeks. A severe myocardial injury was detected in the ZA group. Regarding injury grade, high dose ZA leads to significant myocardial edema and cellular damage when compared with control subjects (p = 0.000). On the other hand, reduced damage was detected in ZA + GP Group when compare with ZA alone treated group (p = 0.030). Our results suggest that the possible cardiac side effects of ZA can be prevented or reduced by GP. However, more comprehensive studies are needed to elucidate this potential effec
Investigation of the Antiangiogenic Properties of Zoledronic Acid by Using Chorioallantoic Membrane Model
Objective: Zoledronic acid (ZA) is a bisphosphonate-derived agent used in osteoporotic clinical pathologies to prevent the development of complications such as fractures and hypercalcemia by regulating bone metabolism. Studies have been conducted on the antiangiogenic efficacy of this agent, which also has other systemic side effects. In this study, the dose-dependent antiangiogenic activity of ZA was investigated on the chorioallantoic membrane model (CAM). Methods: Three doses (10-4, 10-5, and 10-6 M concentrations) of drug pellets were prepared with ZA and another pellet was prepared as the positive control group with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitor agent bevacizumab (10-6 M concentration). Thereafter all pellets were placed on chorioallantoic membranes on the fourth day of egg incubation. All eggs were evaluated for capillary development four days after the drug application. Results: The highest antiangiogenic effect was detected in the positive control group. Moreover, incremental antiangiogenic effects were detected with average scores of .9, 1.1, 1.2 in 10-6, 10-5, and 10-4 M concentrations of ZA groups respectively. Conclusion: Our findings supported that ZA has dose-dependent antiangiogenic effects. This result suggests that different dosing may be required in cases where angiogenesis is therapeutic
