Therapeutic role of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in alzheimer's and parkinson's disease: Electroencephalography microstate correlates

    No full text
IntroductionThe microstate analysis is a method to convert the electrical potentials on the multi-channel electrode array to topographical electroencephalography (EEG) data. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a non-invasive method that can modulate brain networks. This study explores the pathophysiological changes through microstate analysis in two different neurodegenerative diseases, Alzheimer's (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD), characterized by motor and cognitive symptoms and analysis the effect of rTMS on the impaired cognitive and motor functions. Materials and MethodsWe included 18 AD, 8 PD patients, and 13 age-matched controls. For both groups, we applied 5 Hz rTMS on the left pre-SMA in PD patients while 20 Hz rTMS on the left lateral parietal region in AD patients. Each patient was re-evaluated 1 week after the end of the sessions, which included a detailed clinical evaluation and measurement of EEG microstates. ResultsAt the baseline, the common findings between our AD and PD patients were altered microstate (MS) B, MS D durations and transition frequencies between MS A-MS B, MS C-MS D while global explained variance (GEV) ratio and the extent and frequency of occurrence of MS A, MS B, and MS D were separately altered in AD patients. Although no specific microstate parameter adequately differentiated between AD and PD patients, we observed significant changes in MS B and MS D parameters in PD patients. Further, we observed that Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) performances were associated with the transition frequencies between MS A-MS B and MS C-MS D and GEV ratio. After left parietal rTMS application, we have observed significantly increased visual memory recognition and clock drawing scores after left parietal rTMS application associated with improved microstate conditions prominent, especially in the mean duration of MS C in AD patients. Also, pre-SMA rTMS resulted in significant improvement in motor scores and frequency of transitions from MS D to MS C in PD patients. ConclusionThis study shows that PD and AD can cause different and similar microstate changes that can be modulated through rTMS, suggesting the role of MS parameters and rTMS as a possible combination in monitoring the treatment effect in neurodegenerative diseases

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the therapeutic effects of gabapentin (GBP) and different doses of rapamycin (RAPA) in an induced sciatic nerve (SN)-injury rat model. Materials and Methods: The study consisted of 7 groups: Control, Sham, High-dose rapamycin (RAPA-H), Low-dose rapamycin (RAPA-L), GBP, DMSO and DMSO+nerve injury (DMSO+NI). Medical treatment was administered intraperitoneally for 30 days after the induction of SN injury. Results: Significant differences (p<0.001 for all) were found in comparisons between the groups in terms of axon diameter, axon number, and neurofilament (NF) and S100 immunointensity. Among the treatment groups, the highest mean axon diameter value, close to that of the Control group, was seen in the RAPA-L group. In terms of axon number, the value closest to that of the Control group was measured in the GBP group. The NF and S100 immunodensity in the RAPA-L group was similar to that of the GBP group. The S100 immunodensity in the RAPA-L group was closest to that of the Control group. The highest conduction velocity and distal latency values were recorded in the RAPA-L group. Conclusion: The histological and electrophysiological findings observed in this study suggest that RAPA-L treatment is a promising alternative to GBP

    No full text
AbstractObjective: The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not the ImageJ pro-gram can be used to automatically determine the growth period of the hand and wrist which have different growth-development periods according to the density values in the phalanges in radiographs.Setting and sample population: Our study included hands-wrist radiographs of 270 individuals aged 8–17 years.Material and Methods: The study’s participants were classified into 7 groups accord-ing to their skeletal maturation stage (PP2=, MP3=, MP3cap, DP3u, PP3u, MP3u, and Ru) which included pre- peak, peak, and post- peak periods. The total density values (TDV) and pure density values (PDV) in the distal, medial, and proximal phalanges were calculated using each radiograph in the ImageJ program. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to evaluate the density values and chronological age, and pairwise comparisons were made using the post- hoc LSD test. Results: The total density value was graphically zigzagged in the mesial, distal, and proximal phalanges. However, the pure density value increased continuously until the post- peak period and decreased after the DP3u period until the Ru period. While no significant difference in total density values was observed between the growth periods for all three phalanges, a significant difference in pure density values was observed. Conclusion: It has been demonstrated in the ImageJ program that the peak growth period can be distinguished using the pure density values obtained from all phalanges of the third finger and that this method can be used as an alternative to the growth period detection through artificial intelligence

The aim of this study was to examine pre-service science teachers' (PST') teaching activities on modeling and the use of models. The study was designed as a case study, and criterion sampling method, -a non-random purposeful sampling method-, was used to determine the participants. The criteria used in determining the participants included (i) being senior PSTs, (ii) being enrolled to Special Teaching Methods-2 course, and (iii) participating voluntarily in the study. The study was carried out with a total of 40 senior PSTs (33 female and 7 males), who attended the Department of Science Education at Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University, in the 2019-2020 academic year. In order to reduce possible biases that may occur in qualitative studies, a number of data collection tools were used for validity and reliability. Data collection tools included (i) learning outcomes related to modeling and use of models in the Science Curriculum (MoNE, 2018), (ii) lesson plans prepared by the PSTs for these outcomes, (iii) observations of teaching practices, (iv) field notes taken by the researchers, and (v) semi-structured interviews done with the PSTs. data were analayzed through document analysis and content analysis techniques. Findings showed that most of the model-related learning outcomes in Science Curriculum (MoNE, 2018) are structured around the disciplines of physics and biology, and less around chemistry. In the lesson plans prepared for the Special Teaching Methods-2 course, -which is based on the principles such as preparing a lesson plan, organizing and presenting the environment, preparing the equipments and materials to be used during the lesson, and evaluating the presentations in terms of teaching skills-, it was seen that model-related activities were mostly included in the 'Explore' step of the 5E Teaching Method, -in the step that gives students the opportunity to observe, demonstrate their research skills and question. It was also seen in both lesson plans and lesson presentations that PST used the 'representation' function of the models the most, and the 'prediction' dimension the least. In the interviews, it was observed that PSTs had limited understandings about the definition of models and their function; and they were confused because they could not draw a border about what a model is and what is not. With these findings, it was recommended that the pedagogical knowledge about models can be clarified, the PSTs are provided with comprehensive knowledge about models, and the science teacher education programs can be revised in consideration of the requirements of the Science Curriculum. In addition, since PSTs' limited understandings and misconceptions about models are acquired from their past experiences, it is recommended that in-service teachers should inform students about the nature of models, as well

BACKGROUND: The discovery that medical treatment could be successful in cases with uncomplicated acute appendicitis (UCAA) has revealed the need for successfully differentiating cases with complicated acute appendicitis (CAA). The present study examined the usability of neutrophil-to-platelet ratio (NPR), immature granulocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio, and red blood cell distribution width-to-lymphocyte ratio (RDWLR) in the CAA/UCAA differentiation. METHODS: A retrospective evaluation was made of patients undergoing appendectomy between January 2019 and December 2020. According to pathological and clinical findings, the patients were divided into negative appendectomy, CAA and UCAA groups. Laboratory parameters and associated ratios were evaluated by comparing the groups. RESULTS: The study included 348 patients. Of the patients, 11.2% had CAA, 81.6% had UCAA, and 7.2% had negative appendectomy. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (AUC=0.742), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (AUC=0.707), immature granulocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (AUC=0.782), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (AUC=0.720), and RDWLR (AUC=0.711) were found significant in the differentiation between complicated and uncomplicated AA. The NPR (AUC=0.789) was found to be significant in the differentiation between positive and negative appendectomy. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that the immature granulocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio, NPR, monocyte-to-lymphocyte, and RDWLR, which have not been previously studied in patients with acute appendicitis (AA), could be used to differentiate between complicated and uncomplicated AA groups
