    Macroprudential Policies and Market Competition in Mortgage Lending Markets: Evidence for Chile

    Ph.D.In this dissertation, I explore the unintended consequences of macroprudential policies, focusing on the impact of loan-loss-provisioning (LLP) on mortgage market competition. This study is anchored in the context of a policy shift in Chile that, in some situations, can drastically increase the provisions for mortgages with a loan-to-value (LTV) ratio greater than 80\%. Utilizing granular administrative datasets, including banking records, Chile's real estate transaction census, and detailed profiles of a majority of Chilean borrowers, I construct and estimate a structural model of credit demand and supply. Unlike conventional models, the demand component of my model explicitly estimates borrowers' choice sets, challenging the standard assumption that borrowers consider all available products. I find evidence that the LLP policy has a significant effect on average interest rates and dramatically reduces the probability that mortgages with an LTV greater than 80\%, from a substantial group of banks, enter most borrowers' choice sets. I also find evidence that the LLP regulation affects the marginal costs of mortgage origination for most products. Through counterfactual analyses, I assess the impact of changes in borrowers' choice sets, borrowers' attributes, and marginal costs on pricing

    Evaluation of Nurses' Attitudes and Knowledge toward Quantitative Blood Loss Implementation

    D.N.P.Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is one of the leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality in the United States. Of the morbidity and mortality related to this maternal complication, it is estimated that up to 93% is preventable. There are widely varying inconsistencies with postpartum blood loss measurement via visual estimates, therefore, quantitative blood loss (QBL) is recognized as the current gold standard of blood loss measurement by multiple professional organizations in maternal care. However, it has not been consistently implemented across the United States due to lack of staff knowledge and negative staff attitudes toward this task. This quality improvement project assessed changes in labor and delivery nursing staff’s knowledge and attitudes surrounding the implementation of QBL before and after a didactic and simulation educational intervention. The implementation site was a small, rural, western community hospital on the labor, delivery, postpartum, and recovery unit. The target population was 14 staff or travel nurses. Of the 14 possible, 7 participated in the pretest, 4 participated in the didactic education and posttest 1, and 3 participated in the simulation education and posttest 2. Outcomes were measured with a knowledge test and a 12-item readiness to change assessment tool for attitudes. Data was collected at three different time points: preintervention, following didactic education, and following simulation education. A marked improvement was shown on knowledge test between the pretest, (x̄ = 59.1), and posttest 1 (x̄ =91.7; p = .017). Small improvements were also demonstrated in knowledge scores between posttest 1(x̄= 91.7), and posttest 2 (x̄ = 93.3). Attitude scores revealed that confidence in one’s ability to perform QBL increased to 100% after didactic education, but then declined slightly following simulation education. All the participants in the simulation education agreed that QBL was an easy intervention to perform. These results suggest that the use of both didactic and simulation education improves staff knowledge and attitudes surrounding QBL implementation

    TLISI 2023: Core Pathways Virtual Gallery

    In the Spring of 2023, the Core Pathway on Climate Change produced a pop-up gallery in partnership with the World Wide Climate Teach-In. This gallery featured a distributed collection of student work covering a broad range of forms ranging from drone videography to short stories. All of the student work in the collection was organized around 6 (student developed) core themes (overpopulation, what about nuclear?, injustice in daily life, oceans, extreme weather events, and doubt as a tool) and their relationship to climate change. The gallery is meant to feature interdisciplinary work that highlights the impacts of climate change. In total, the gallery featured nearly 100 student works both physically and digitally in Lauinger Library. As a lasting archive, there is now a virtual gallery space on the Core Pathways website featuring all of the submitted works

    Computing the Ground State Energy of a Molecular Model with Many-Body Green's Functions

    Ph.D.The dynamical self-energy mapping algorithm is an approximate algorithm for determining the Green's function of a molecule, which allows for the molecular energy and other observables to be calculated. The algorithm extracts a sparse model from the molecular Hamiltonian that has a Green's function with the same low-order spectral moments as the molecule. The sparse model can be solved much more easily than the full molecular model. The dynamical self-energy is extracted and employed within the molecule to determine the molecular Green's function. In this work, we illustrate how this algorithm can be implemented on a quantum computer and discuss a number of different options for how one can carry out the algorithm concretely

    Moderate Republican Women Ticket Splitting and Trusting Trump

    This paper looks at the data around why moderate Republican women deviate from other Republican voting patterns – namely around ticket splitting during the 2022 midterm elections – and how much they trust former President Donald Trump. When cross-referenced with their lack of trust in former President Trump, the percentage for ticket-splitting dramatically increases for moderate Republican women. While there has been a fair amount of research on the trends of Republican women overall, particularly conservative Republican women, there has not been as much research on the voting patterns of moderate or liberal Republican women. The data showcases how moderate Republican women’s distrust for Trump correlates to splitting their ticket during the 2022 midterm elections. The findings in this study highlight the disillusionment that certain sections of the Republican party have with Trump and how it affects the party as a whole through divided voting patterns
