Riding the Wave: The Political Impact of the Korean Wave in China-Korea Relationship

    No full text
M.P.P.Hallyu, known as the Korean Wave, has gained popularity in China for a decade. Growing literature has discussed its global impact and factors that contribute to its popularity. At the same time, little research has focused on the political perception of the Chinese after the THAAD issue in 2016. This thesis studies the relationship between exposure to the Korean wave and the opinion of consuming South Korea’s imports for Chinese. We use data from the East Asian Social Survey (EASS), conducted in 2018. The OLS regression demonstrated a statistically significant association between watching K-drama and disagreeing with the negative statement of limiting foreign trade with South Korea. This association is also significant for global engagement and different education levels but not for global mobility. Our results imply that the Korean wave, as the product of cultural diplomacy, is an effective political tool for South Korea to increase its soft power and economic gain. However, it also opened a vulnerability that allows China’s soft sanction to fight back on the THAAD issue

Minerals for Infrastructure: An Analysis of the People’s Republic of China’s Abuse in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to Diminish US Defenses

    No full text
Many studies have focused on the issues of human rights abuses stimulating local instability surrounding heavy metal mines in developing countries, particularly cobalt mining in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), to support the global push for batteries aimed to be used in modern electronics as well as electronic vehicles for future environmental sustainability. Specifically, research, studies, and investigative reporting have illuminated the poor resiliency in harsh working and living conditions for workers at artisanal small-scale mining copper and cobalt sites in the former Katanga Province in the DRC affiliated with Chinese Communist Party (CCP) state-owned enterprises. This leads to the People's Republic of China reaping the majority of the international benefits as the country is the largest manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries worldwide. However, limited to no published reporting highlights a major national security issue for the United States in this process. The CCP has an intensive national strategy, the Military-Civil Fusion, which was produced to create the world's most dominant, technologically advanced military. The CCP can reach this objective by using cobalt mined by abused Congolese citizens in semiconductors for their military satellites, hypersonics, and space launch vehicles. The research in this paper focuses on human rights abuses in the artisanal mining communities, particularly in the former Katanga Province of the DRC, along with local instability, achieving the CCP's goal of deteriorating the United States' National Security

Studying the Effect of Water Stress Level on Battle-Related Deaths in Sub-Saharan Africa

    No full text
M.P.P.Existing literature suggests that water scarcity is positively correlated with violentconflict in Sub-Saharan Africa. I use country-level data for 28 Sub-Saharan African countries to further explore the effects of water scarcity on battle-related deaths. My results suggest a positive and statistically significant relationship between these two variables. More specifically, I find that a one percentage point increase in the water stress level is associated with an increase of .370 battle-related deaths per hundred thousand population in Sub-Saharan Africa. This study contributes to the literature by measuring water scarcity based on the so-called “stress level,” which has not previously been extensively applied as an indicator in a study of this sort. I also use the most recent data from the World Bank and UCDP, covering the time-period between 2000 and 2022
