Mémoire présenté en vue de l’obtention du grade de master en sciences chimiques Spécialité : Contrôle et Analyse ChimiquesIn the BUTERERE area there is a treatment plant that treats wastewater which, after treatment, leaves sludge made up of organic matter such as primary sludge; facultative sludge. The management of this sludge presents a serious environmental problem. It is with this in mind that a research study was conducted with a view to valorizing this sludge as renewable energy. Thus, samples of sludge among these different types of considered were taken into account for this research. Three Scenarios were considered taking into account the following ratios of proportions: The first scenario concerns primary sludge associated with its inoculum in the ratios (S/I) of 2/1, 3/1 and 4/1 and the control; the second scenario concerns facultative sludge associated with its inoculum in the same ratios of (S/I) 2/1, 3/1 and 4/1 and the control and finally the third scenario concerns primary sludge in reaction with facultative sludge in the same ratios of 2/1, 3/1 and 4/1 and control. The samples were collected from September 6th to October 31st, 2024 for the 1st scenario, followed by the 2nd scenario which started on October 19th until November 16th, 2024 and finally the 3rd Scenario started December 24th until January 18th, 2024. Thus, the physicochemical characteristics of the sludge and their methanogenic potential were evaluated, then the biogas production was optimized. The monitoring of the digesters lasted 25 days. The results of this study show that primary sludge in reaction with its inoculum presents a volume of biogas whose methane composition is 67.52%. The quantitative energy estimates are 393.26KW/t/year. On the other hand, in the case of mixing primary sludge associated with facultative sludge, quantitative energy estimates were 387.70KW/t/year, i.e. a percentile methane composition of 69.09%. In addition, the yield of primary sludge mixed with its inoculum produced a yield of 67.52% of methane production with an energy of 393.26KW/t/year. The volume of biogas obtained for the mixture of primary sludge and facultative sludge was 14860ml while for primary sludge mixed with inoculum is 15490ml. The best results are observed for digesters with a substrate/inoculum ratio (S/I) of 3/1 and 4/1 for (BP+I) and (BP+BF) respectively. Thus, the amount of biogas produced is (15490 ml) for primary sludge mixed with the inoculum from the BUTERERE wastewater treatment plant and had a methane percentage composition of 67.52%. In addition, a biogas quantity of 14860 ml for (BP+BF) without inoculum was produced. This is done to see the influence of facultative sludge in case of mixing with primary sludge and had a methane percentage composition of 69.09%, which are sufficient for electricity production

Mémoire présenté et défendu publiquement en vue de l’obtention du Diplôme de Master complémentaire en Droits de l’Homme et Résolution Pacifique des ConflitsThe right to land is one of the rights recognized to indigenous Pygmy peoples in DR Congo. Indeed, this right which, initially, was a right recognized on the basis of habits and customs and soberly relayed by certain laws in DR Congo, was officially recognized by Law n° 22/030 of July 15, 2022 relating to protection and promotion of the rights of indigenous Pygmy peoples in DR Congo. This law clearly indicates that these indigenous Pygmy people have the right to land and natural resources according to the forms of the chapter devoted to this point in the said law. Curiously, it is observed that this law recognizes, on a legal level, a right for which the indigenous Pygmy peoples have been fighting for several years because, in many cases, their lands, resources and/or forests have been established as areas protected. The cases are legion across the extent of the national territory of the DR Congo and, for example, the Kahuzi-Biega National Park and the Itombwe Nature Reserve – the latter being the case study of this research – constitute emblematic figures who demonstrate how the indigenous Pygmy peoples of Itombwe, in the east of the DR Congo, no longer have their land. Faced with this dehumanizing situation, this study postulates for the effectiveness of the recognition of the right to land for the indigenous peoples of Itombwe while encouraging them to favor, all the same, the conservation of nature according to their ways relating to traditional knowledg

Mémoire présenté et défendu publiquement en vue de l’obtention du Diplôme de Master en Analyse Economique et Développement Option : Analyse EconomiqueThe objective of this study is to analyse the effect of official development assistance (ODA) on human capital in sub-Saharan Africa over the period 1996 to 2023, focusing on the role of institutions in this relationship. To this end, the study uses dynamic generalised method of moments (GMM) panel data with annual series for 33 sub-Saharan African countries. The econometric estimates reveal a significant negative direct effect of ODA on human capital in sub-Saharan Africa. In addition, the results show a positive and significant direct effect of institutional quality on human capital in sub-Saharan Africa. The econometric estimates also show a positive and significant effect of the interaction between ODA and institutional quality on human capital in sub-Saharan Africa. In light of the results of this study, we suggest that governments invest in strengthening institutions, especially governance, public administration and the judiciary, in order to create sound and effective institutions that promote the best allocation of aid

    No full text
This work explores the community mobilization of burundian rural women in the fight against malaria. The context is one of a major public health issue, characterized by a high prevalence of malaria, particularly in rural areas where access to health care and preventive measures is limited. Women play a crucial role in managing family and community health, yet their mobilization remains insufficiently exploited within prevention strategies. This study aims to analyze how women’s participation influences the effectiveness of local malaria control strategies, based on a qualitative approach conducted in Kirundo Province. It examines forms of social interaction, community organization, as well as local, social, cultural, and economic dynamics that facilitate or hinder their engagement. The main findings indicate that women’s mobilization, via social networks, community groups, and intra-familial interactions, has a positive impact on the adoption of preventive behaviors and community awareness. Communication and community solidarity reinforce their role in prevention, thereby contributing to increased resilience against the disease. However, sociocultural barriers, such as gender norms, still limit their access to resources. The thesis concludes that strengthening women’s participation in this fight is crucial and proposes actionable pathways for their empowerment and increased involvement. It also emphasizes that this approach can enhance the efficiency of prevention strategies in rural settings, by valorizing women as agents of change within their communities

Mémoire présenté et défendu publiquement en vue de l'obtention du diplôme de Master en Nutrition et Santé Option : Nutrition CliniqueIntroduction: Decompensated cirrhosis is an advanced stage of cirrhosis of the liver, characterized by severe impairment of liver function due to chronic damage. This condition causes significant clinical problems and raises public health issues, affecting patients' quality of life and the management of associated complications. Methodology: To identify the factors associated with undernutrition in patients with decompensated cirrhosis, we conducted a cross-sectional analytical study at the Kamenge University Hospital. Data collection and analysis were carried out over a period of four months, from November 1, 2023 to February 29, 2024, and involved patients hospitalized in internal medicine with decompensated cirrhosis. To determine the factors associated with undernutrition, we used logistic regression; the measure of association used was the OR and its 95% CI; the significance threshold was set at 5%. Results: Of our participants, between 40-60 years, 64.71% were undernourished positive, 44.44% were undernourished negative; and over 60 years, 64.71% were undernourished positive, 35.29% were undernourished negative. Two factors were significant; „‟Anorexia„‟ (OR= 42.78;p value=0.012;CI=[2.26 808. 17]), in cases of decompensated cirrhosis, if you are anorexic, you are 42.78 times more likely to develop undernutrition than those who are not. and „psychological stress‟ (OR= 33. 47;p-value=0.038;CI=[1.2 923.52 ]), in the case of decompensated cirrhosis, if you have „psychological stress‟, your risk of developing undernutrition is 33.47 times higher than for those who do not. Conclusion: Undernutrition in patients with decompensated cirrhosis is a major clinical issue, as it can worsen their state of health and reduce the effectiveness of treatment. Assessment of undernutrition must take into account factors such as anorexia and psychological stress. Anorexia, which is common in these patients, is the result of metabolic changes, gastrointestinal disorders or the side-effects of treatment, leading to a loss of muscle mass and deterioration in immune function, thereby increasing the risk of complications. In addition, the psychological stress often associated with illness and hospitalisation has an impact on eating habits and can exacerbate undernutrition

Mémoire Présenté et défendu en vue de l’obtention du Diplôme de Master en Sciences et Gestion Intégrée de l’EnvironnementThe improvement of phosphorus availability in agricultural soils is a major challenge for soil fertility and the optimization of crop yields. However, the use of Matongo natural’s phosphates is limited due to their low solubility. This thesis presents a study on enhancing the phosphorus content of composts obtained through the co-composting of tithonia diversifolia and rice straw with various organic additives, including pig manure, poultry droppings, and cow dung, in combination with Matongo phosphates. The main objective of this research is to optimize the valorization of agricultural waste while increasing soil fertility through phosphorus-enriched composts. Initially, an analysis of the physicochemical characteristics of raw materials was conducted to determine their composting potential. Then, several compost formulations were developed, varying the types of input combinations. The resulting composts were subjected to maturation tests and phosphorus content analysis. The results recorded for the control compost samples: E450, E591, and E603 were respectively: 1.05±0.120% P₂O₅; 0.88±0.042% P₂O₅; and 0.69±0.245% P₂O₅. Meanwhile, the composts enriched with Matongo phosphates (E101, E205, E308, E708, and E805) showed the following phosphorus content: 3.56±0.035% P₂O₅, 2.99±0.071% P₂O₅, 3.42±0.081% P₂O₅, 3.12±0.056% P₂O₅, and 3.14±0.070% P₂O₅, respectively. The results indicate that adding Matongo phosphates, in combination with organic additives, significantly increases the phosphorus content of the composts. Physicochemical parameter analyses, heavy metal assessments, and phytotoxicity tests were conducted on the produced composts to evaluate their stability and maturity. Except for lead (Pb) content, which exceeds the quality standards for compost intended for fertilization, all other tested parameters comply with the established quality standards for high-quality compost. Among the tested additives, the cow dung adjuvant proved to be a better phosphate solubilizer than the two others adjuvants tested. This study contributes to the valorization of agricultural residues and the sustainable management of resources while addressing the growing need for phosphorus-rich organic fertilizers in agriculture. The findings of this research open up promising perspectives for the development of innovative and sustainable composting practices

Mémoire présenté et soutenu publiquement en vue de l’obtention du diplôme de Master en Socio-anthropologieAlthough the neighborhoods within the Gasenyi river basin are identified as flood risk zone, in the absence of regulation by urban planning services, they continue to be occupied in an unplanned and anarchic manner, in a context of insufficient urban planning. Additionally, these neighborhoods face significant issues with the drainage of rainwater and wastewater, which increases their vulnerability to flooding. Despite recurrent floods and the ongoing risk of future flooding, people live there and continue to settle in the area. This research questions how the residents of these neighborhoods perceive the flood risk they face, as well as how they perceive their living environment and, to some extent, the motivations or reasons behind their settlement in this zone. It also explores how these perceptions influence residents' behaviors regarding space occupation and flood resilience. This study highlights that flood risk is often perceived by residents in a concrete and immediate way. Indeed, the concept of “risk zone”, frequently used in the literature and by experts, does not correspond to how the inhabitants of the Gasenyi River basin perceive the risk and their living environment. The increased flood risk is increasingly localized to specific places, which are linked to directly perceptible visual indicators such as ravines or the fact that the dwelling is situated close to the river. This way of conceiving the risk and the environment at risk profoundly influences behaviors related to space occupation and the decision to adopt or not protective measures. Personal experience with floods, whether experienced or not, the position of living upstream or downstream of the Gasenyi River, the cultural capital associated with socioeconomic status, or attachment to property are also factors that influence residents’ perceptions and their adoption of protective measures. This research also shows that beyond the natural hazard, It is a tangle of social, economic, and political factors that exacerbates vulnerability to floods and motivates the settlement of inhabitants in this risk zone
