Empowering Children and Families with Food Allergies: An Innovative Role for Occupational Therapy
Food allergies (FAs) have far-reaching implications regarding occupational participation. Children with food allergies and their families experience impacts on their daily life activities. The current standard of care for FAs fails to adequately address the wide-ranging barriers to participation in home, school, and community environments. This study used a mixed-method design to examine the impacts of FA on the needs of children and families affected by FA. Eighteen parents of children with FAs and six health care providers of children with FAs were interviewed; the parents also completed two questionnaires to identify the level of impact of FA on areas of daily living. The results indicated that parents perceive FA as a significant barrier to several aspects of daily life, and parents and health care providers recognized the need for additional supports for families of children with FA. Occupational therapists can intervene to help families with FA improve their participation in daily life activities while managing and limiting exposure to FAs. Expanding the role of occupational therapists to address the needs of families with FAs and recommendations for supporting this population are discussed
Regaining Quality of Life Painting Pet Portraits
Tina Primer, an artist based in Illinois, provided the cover art for the Spring 2023 issue of The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy (OJOT). “Wriggly” is an 11” x 14” painting made from acrylic on stretched canvas. After a debilitating stroke, Tina began using art as therapy. When the strength in her dominant hand did not return, painting pet portraits provided the motivation to do things differently. Tina’s playful use of color and attention to detail capture each pet’s unique personality. Discovering a new way to paint improved Tina’s quality of life
Applying the Ecological Model of Human Performance and the SlutWalk Movement to Support those Affected by Rape Culture in the Context of Occupational Therapy
Improving the occupational lives of others is at the heart of occupational therapy practice. Advocacy for clientele is central to this improvement, both at individual and structural levels. We argue that interventions in the Ecological Model of Human Performance (EHP) and the social movement theSlutWalk can offer increased opportunity for occupational therapists to address the harmful implications for clients affected by sexual assault and rape culture. In addition, through the principles of the EHP and the SlutWalk, we propose that occupational therapists can have a hand in eradicating the culture that facilitates and tolerates sexual violence. This paper highlights the barriers women and sexual assault survivors may face to equitable occupational participation, where occupational therapists may establish/restore, alter, create, prevent, and adapt intervention approaches in the client’s context to elicit optimal engagement in meaningful activity

The MIS-C Data page was obtained from Michigan\u27s COVID-19 data page: https://www.michigan.gov/coronavirus/stats/mis-c-reporting.
This report is created by the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services from data self-reported by health care providers and local health departments. Data is updated on the first and third Thursdays of the month.
Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) is a condition in children and adolescents under 21 years of age where multiple organ systems become inflamed or dysfunctional which occurs in association with illness. Children with MIS-C may have a fever and various symptoms, including abdominal (gut) pain, vomiting, diarrhea, neck pain, rash, bloodshot eyes, or feeling extra tired. We do not yet know what causes MIS-C. However, many children with MIS-C were infected with the virus that causes COVID-19, or had been around someone with COVID-19. Health care providers and local health departments are asked to maintain a high degree of suspicion for MIS-C in pediatric and adolescent patients presenting with symptoms similar to Kawasaki Disease or ill individuals who have been previously exposed to COVID-19 with signs and symptoms. Patients have presented with persistent fever*, hypotension, multiorgan (cardiac, gastrointestinal, renal, hematologic, dermatologic, and neurologic) involvement, and elevated inflammatory markers. Respiratory symptoms have been present in some, but are not a common finding.
Contains the tables Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) Michigan Data Summary and Demographic Information, and the graph Confirmed Cases of MIS-C by Week of Onset in Michigan
Deconstructing the Administrative State”: Legal Trends and Consequences
Attacks on the administrative state are escalating. The Supreme Court’s conservative majority is on track to reverse key pillars of administrative law that gives deference to an agency’s expertise and knowledge when interpreting its authorizing statute. This article explores the legal, ideological, and philosophical underpinnings of these doctrinal changes in administrative law and the likely effect on administrative governance. It aims to inform non legal stakeholders, including social workers, how legal doctrines and principles shape what executive agencies do, the consequences of doctrinal changes, and the implications for administrators, those they serve, and the larger body politic

The WHERE WE STAND WITH COVID-19 map was obtained from Michigan\u27s main COVID-19 page: https://www.michigan.gov/coronavirus. Data was compiled by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). The information was updated once a week on Wednesdays.
The State of Michigan is working around the clock to test and treat COVID-19 patients. Below is the most recent data healthcare experts across the state have compiled.
The image contained a map, indicating total cases by county provided by the CDC. It also contains a second map of Michigan COVID-19 Community Levels by County, not captured in this screenshot. The figure also provides statistics on Total COVID-19 Confirmed and Probable Cases, Total COVID-19 Deaths in Confirmed and Probable Cases, Weekly COVID-19 Confirmed and Probable Cases, Average Daily COVID-19 Confirmed and Probable Cases, and Weekly COVID-19 Deaths in Confirmed and Probable Cases. There is also a notes section that contains pertinent information and when the figure was last updated
