The Experience of Burnout of Rehabilitation Therapists in Long-Term Care Settings: A Qualitative Exploration
Background: Burnout among health care workers is growing among long-term care staff, with various repercussions. Research about how rehabilitation therapists (occupational, physical, and speech) perceive and experience burnout in such settings is limited. Understanding these experiences with burnout in long-term care is necessary to address burnout. This study investigated rehabilitation therapists\u27 perceptions of and experiences with burnout while working in long-term care.
Method: The researcher used a qualitative interpretive approach to guide audio-recorded and transcribed interviews. The data were analyzed through coding and then themes were developed.
Results: Six themes emerged: causes of stress and burnout, individual ways of managing stress and burnout, systemic changes for managing stress and burnout, COVID-19 and mental health, the definition of burnout, and change over time in work experience.
Discussion: Rehabilitation therapists should feel empowered to advocate for policies that reduce burnout in the workplace. One policy all of the participants acknowledged was that productivity expectations were unrealistic. Future research, advocacy, and policy should address systemic and organizational factors related to burnout to relieve the related consequences

Preparation and Use of Physical Agent Modalities Among U.S. Occupational Therapists: A Mixed-Methods, Exploratory-Descriptive Study
Background: Physical agent modalities (PAMs) are used by occupational therapists to prepare for or facilitate participation in purposeful activities. However, little has been published in the last quarter century regarding how U.S. occupational therapists use and are prepared to use of PAMs in contemporary clinical practice. In this study, U.S.-based occupational therapists were surveyed regarding their use of PAMs, preparation for use, and perceptions of that preparation.
Methods: Survey data was collected from a purposive sample of 141 U.S.-based occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants as part of this exploratory-descriptive, mixed-methods study. Thematic and descriptive statistical analyses were completed using quantitative and qualitative data.
Results: Quantitative data provided a current profile of types, frequency, and settings in which PAMs are used, along with sources and perceptions of training. Qualitative data yielded three themes, including (a) benefit of experiential learning, (b) benefit of continuing education, and (c) relative adequacy of entry-level training.
Conclusions: Findings from this study serve as an initial step in understanding contemporary use of PAMs in clinical occupational therapy practice. Further study is needed to expand the knowledge base in the profession and support an evidence-informed approach to care
Primary Care Occupational Therapy: Diagnoses, Outcomes, Reimbursement, and Team Satisfaction
Background: Literature supports including occupational therapists on primary care teams. Few occupational therapists practice in this setting. The health care community needs more information regarding the benefits of occupational therapists on the team.
Method: We completed an 18-month pilot integrating an occupational therapist in a primary care team, tracking conditions treated by the occupational therapist, visit duration, reimbursement, and level of primary care providers’ (PCP) satisfaction. We then evaluated outcomes via a retrospective chart review.
Results: Visits were brief, averaging 35 min. Longer visits did not improve outcomes. Occupational therapists were reimbursed by Medicare (47%), commercial (47%), both (6%). PCPs referred numerous conditions, and \u3e 50% related to musculoskeletal pain. Most of the patients, 84%, reported partial (30%) or complete (54%) improvement; 60% required one-time treatment; and 40% were referred for further treatment on-site or outside the department for additional or specialty treatment. After the pilot, most of the PCPs felt an occupational therapist on the team was absolutely essential (n = 14; 61%), or very important (n = 7; 30%).
Conclusion: Embedded occupational therapy treatment resulted in symptom improvement in 84% of patients across a variety of conditions, and brief visits were effective. Occupational therapist services were reimbursed across insurance plans. After working with an occupational therapist, 91% of the PCPs viewed the occupational therapist as a very important or essential team member

Leveraging thermal massing, it strives to seamlessly merge with its natural surroundings. As global warming looms, there arises a pressing need for structures that offer stable temperatures for comfort, a cohesive design for mental well-being, and the capability to significantly reduce energy consumption. This concept represents a proactive response to the evolving demands of our changing world
