No full textGrand Connections: A Workshop Series to Support Grandparents Caring for Grandchildren Under 5
Get PDFA workshop series for grandparents caring for grandchildren under five was developed by ZERO TO THREE and piloted online in 2021 as part of a multi-year effort to create resources specifically for grandparents and kinship caregivers. Seven workshops, each 90 minutes long, offer a unique 3-generation approach: Grandparents receive the latest information on child-rearing, strategies for collaborating with their grandchild’s parents, and opportunities to connect with their grandchildren through read-alouds and art activities. Workshop materials (detailed lesson plans, slide decks, and grandparent handouts) are available online at no charge to organizations wishing to run a program of their own.
Of seven pilot sites, five provided the workshop series to grandparents sharing the care with parents and two sites provided the series to grandparents raising grandchildren without parents present. Two sites offered the workshops in Spanish; five were in English. Pre- and post-program data showed statistically significant changes in five parenting constructs and near-unanimous positive assessment of qualitative aspects of the program. This article includes details on how the program was developed and how it was received when piloted in 2021, as well as suggestions for implementation

Adaptation and Extraction Among the Waterways of Dante’s Inferno
No full textThis paper examines cycles of environmental adaptation within Dante’s Inferno, as well as how certain models of learned adaptation can be read as a type of environmental extraction. This paper takes cues from medieval Italian water management and geological phenomenon to argue that the swamplands of the Acheron and Styx and the blood-read Phlegethon exhibit varied and contextually dependent models of adaptation and networked agency. From there, it engages tenets of seep ecology to argue that these models seep into the symbiosing biocycles between environment, infernal creatures, and human shades along the banks of these waterways—and that by virtue of the slippage between Dante-pilgrim and Dante-poet, these networks of relationality extend toward the poem’s audience. Finally, this paper examines the extractive view with which Dante and his Inferno engage their environments and asks ethical questions about how people and disciplines can engage with environments both literary and material apart from extractive logics
Can Workers and Their Families Live on a Living Wage?
No full textMany lower-wage workers’ earnings are insufficient to cover expenses such as food, housing, medical care, or transportation. While there are efforts to raise the federal and state minimum wage levels, including proposals to raise the minimum wage to $15, an alternative approach is to offer a living wage, that is a wage sufficient to meet these basic needs. We explored whether incomes above a basic needs budget threshold reduced or eliminated material hardships using a sample of 232 unionized lower-wage hospital workers. We collected data using an online survey. Basic needs budget thresholds were obtained from the MIT Living Wage Calculator. Three variables were created from nine material hardships, reflecting medical, food, housing, and transportation difficulties. Reporting any material hardship was prevalent regardless of whether household incomes were at/ above or below the MIT threshold. Addressing these hardships will require higher wages, expanded employer-provided benefits, and an expansion of federal and state safety net programs
Factors Influencing Driving Confidence in Older Adults
Get PDFBackground: It has been determined that both confidence and cognition impact driving performance and self-regulation. While it is known that cognitive decline impacts driving safety and that decreases in driving confidence can lead to self-driving regulation, further research is needed to determine whether cognition, demographics, and driving routines are associated with driving confidence.
Method: A non-experimental, cross-sectional design study using a convenience sample of 100 older adults was conducted to determine if individual factors are related to daytime and nighttime driving confidence.
Results: Multiple regression indicated that four variables predicted daytime driving confidence, including cognition, driving at night, highway driving, and driving importance, F(4, 95) = 6.82, p F(4, 95) = 8.58, p \u3c .001, adjusted R2 =.23.
Conclusion: The results indicate both daytime and nighttime driving confidence in older adults is associated with greater cognition and driving in challenging situations, including at night, on the highway (daytime only), and in the winter versus summer (nighttime only). Daytime driving confidence was also associated with increased driving importance while nighttime driving confidence was associated with being male
