F undamentals of College Admission Counseling: A Textbook for Graduate Students and Practicing Counselors, edited by Beth Gilfillan and 
Christopher W. Tremblay, is a streamlined, 
focused, and updated sixth edition of this 
National Association of College Admission 
Counseling (NACAC) publication. This text 
blends the expertise and experience of thirty-
nine authors in clearly written chapters with 
well-defined learning objectives, key terms, 
resources, and chapter summaries. The 2024 
Council for the Accreditation of Counseling 
and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) 
Standards are identified for each chapter as a 
service to counselor education programs 
seeking to ensure that each standard is 
addressed within the required coursework.  
  
This single textbook bridges the gap between 
required training of school counselors and the 
knowledge required to offer robust support 
and college exploration and counseling to all 
students in middle and high school 
environments. According to the 2023 NACAC 
State of College Admission report, public 
school counselors spend about 22% of their 
time on postsecondary counseling compared 
to private school counselors who spend 51% 
of their time on this work (NACAC, 2024). 
The complexity of the 
college admission 
process has increased 
dramatically over the 
last 20 years with no 
end to the myriads of 
requirements from 
individual colleges 
across the country. 
The impact of the 
COVID 19 pandemic added even more 
complications to the process in terms of 
standardized testing requirements, campus 
visits, and evolving admission expectations. 
The terminology at the beginning of each 
chapter serves as a review for those who have 
experience in college admission and a primer 
for those who are new to the field.   
 
The editors utilized input and responses from 
multiple stakeholder groups to determine 
needs and areas of emphasis for this edition. 
It is clear in the approach and focus of each 
chapter that the needs of practicing college 
admission counselors guide the techniques, 
strategies, and approaches to greater 
understanding of the challenges associated 
with balancing institutional needs within the 
field of college admission while addressing 
the specific needs of diverse populations. The

Book Review:  Fundamentals of College Admission Counseling 
is a comprehensive framework utilized to 
drive programming to serve the academic, 
social emotional, and college and career 
readiness needs for all students (ASCA, 2019). 
Chapter eight provides insight and guidance 
about the components of a college going 
culture and how to create and sustain this 
atmosphere within a high school 
environment. This chapter also highlights the 
needs and terminology that are necessary 
when educating students and families about 
the college admission process. Chapter nine is 
dedicated to college and career readiness in 
schools and makes important connections 
between the work of school counselors and 
the field of college admission counseling. 
School based counselors can benefit from 
explanations and examples of how to 
integrate the work of college counseling into a 
MultiTiered Systems of Support (MTSS) 
framework. MTSS are “preventative, data-
driven, evidencebased, culturally responsive 
frameworks” (p. 156) designed to provide 
universal support and access for all students 
with tiered levels of support for students who 
need additional assistance. Chapter ten 
addresses the need for utilizing data to drive, 
evaluate, and improve college counseling 
within the high school environment and 
chapter eleven delves into the integration of 
technology to introduce, manage, and 
supplement the college exploration, search, 
and application process.   
 
Additional topics covered in the first section 
of this text include the need to understand 
and relate to students in this transitional stage 
using developmental approaches to

the components of the college admission 
process from specific-population-driven 
content. Part one of the textbook examines the 
basics of the college admission process from 
both collegiate and high school perspectives. 
The topics are presented in logical 
progression to the field of college admission 
counseling beginning with an overview of the 
shifting landscape of higher education and 
the importance of ethical practices. The 
second chapter includes an in-depth 
examination of ethical practices within the 
field with an emphasis on the imperative of 
integrating ethics into each stage of the 
college admission process. The third chapter 
brings the impact of recent Supreme Court 
decisions to the forefront while 
demonstrating the commitment of the 
authors and editors to the vital work of 
diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging 
(DEIB) in college admission and beyond. 
Studies support that students’ sense of 
belonging at an institution correlates with 
increased academic success, retention, 
persistence, and can be protective for mental 
health for all students. These data also 
suggest that students from underrepresented 
racial, ethnic, and minority groups as well as 
first generation students reported a lower 
sense of belonging (Gopalan, et al., 2022).  
 
American School Counselor Association 
(ASCA) standards are integrated throughout 
the text to help school-based counselors 
integrate their work to align with the ASCA 
National Model. The ASCA National Model

strengths-based approach with person-first 
language and each chapter includes strategies 
to increase access to post-secondary options 
for each of these specific populations. The 
populations addressed in this section include: 
First generation students, international 
students, LGBTQ+ students, military-
connected students, multilingual students, 
students experiencing homelessness, students 
from low socioeconomic backgrounds, 
students from rural settings, students of color, 
students with disabilities, students with 
experience with the foster care, transfer 
students, and undocumented students. 
Students who have backgrounds and barriers 
to educational access do not lose their 
challenges when they enter college. These 
students continue to need guidance, support, 
and access to campus based or campus 
adjacent resources in order to support their 
retention and graduation (Hallet, et al., 2019).  
 
This textbook can serve as a foundational text 
for counselor training programs that aspire to 
equip future school and college counselors 
with a solid basis of information to initiate, 
develop, create, and sustain college 
counseling programs within their schools as 
they nurture a college going culture. This text 
can also serve as a refresher for individuals 
who are re-entering the field of counseling or 
entering a college counseling role without the 
benefit of a college admission background or 
college counseling focused coursework. 
Potential areas for exploration and 
improvement of this text would include 
examining future trends and ways in which 
colleges are reinventing themselves to meet 
understanding and engaging in the college 
admission process. Emerging adults need 
guidance in exploring and assessing their 
talents, fascinations, and skills while 
matching them with potential postsecondary 
environments in which they can grow and 
thrive. The concept of a variety of 
postsecondary options is also presented as a 
reminder that college is not always the best fit 
for every student. Components of an 
admission application, the process of 
admission and evaluation of applications by 
colleges, are presented and examined in this 
section. A chapter dedicated to financial aid 
and the importance of helping families and 
students understand the basics of the 
financial aid process, the availability of 
various loans and the implications thereof. 
According to the authors, “Paying for college 
begins with understanding what is included 
in the cost of attending college” (p 198).  
 
Part two of Fundamentals of College Admission 
Counseling: A Textbook for Graduate Students 
and Practicing Counselors is dedicated to 
specific populations and how high school and 
college admission counselors can learn to 
identify, encourage, and facilitate their 
recruitment, enrollment, and success in the 
post-secondary setting. Each population is 
defined, introduced, and celebrated as 
unique, valuable, and necessary within the 
post-secondary environment. It is important 
to remember that students are intersectional 
beings, and their identities may include 
membership in multiple populations. All 
authors in this section consistently use a

the needs of a shrinking high school graduate 
demographic. This may be accomplished by 
adding a chapter dedicated to the needs of 
non-traditional students. Another area for 
expansion for this greater emphasis on 
strategies to support the mental health of 
students in this stage of life in high school 
and in post-secondary spaces. The field of 
college admission counseling is ever 
changing and evolving on a daily basis. This 
updated, streamlined, well-informed, and 
easily digestible textbook is an ideal resource 
for any new or seasoned college admission 
counselor who aspires to facilitate student 
engagement in the post-secondary 
exploration and application process.
