Reflections From the Other Side of Acute Care
An occupational therapist of 40 years experiences a traumatic event during her time in an acute care hospital. She journeys through a host of life-altering experiences, including cognitive decline, delusion, paranoia, and an inability to engage in her desired occupations. While on this journey and during reflections following her return home, she is able to see more clearly how an occupational therapist may have assisted with several of the major concerns she was experiencing, thus improving her well-being and quality of life. She is an Assistant Editor for the Open Journal of Occupational Therapy (OJOT) and this is her story
Social Participation and Navigation with Adolescent and Young Adult Brain Tumor Survivors: Usability and Potential Benefits
Background: This study examined the usability and potential benefits of Social Participation and Navigation (SPAN), a virtual coaching goal planning intervention, which was modified for adolescent and young adult (AYA) brain tumor survivors who often experience social participation challenges.
Methods: Four AYA brain tumor survivors participated in a brief trial of the modified SPAN consisting of four weekly coaching sessions with trained supervised occupational therapy graduate students and use of a website and web application to assist with goal planning and achievement. The participants rated their social participation and SPAN-specific skills pre/post program. The participants and parents completed 1-week and 1-month usability surveys post program. Effect sizes were computed to examine pre/post score changes. Descriptive statistics and content analyses were used to examine quantitative and qualitative usability data.
Results: SPAN was well-received by the AYAs, parents, and coaches with high satisfaction ratings for coaching. All participants achieved at least one goal. The participants had increased post-intervention scores in social participation (overall, school, community) and SPAN skills (goal planning, self-regulation, reciprocal communication). Suggestions for improvement primarily focused on the SPAN web application.
Conclusion: The results demonstrated the usability and potential benefits of SPAN for AYA brain tumor survivors and have informed a larger implementation trial

Innovating the Communication Pedagogy: An Application of Flipped Classroom Technique in Communication Education
As students try to make sense of their college experience and the value of attaining a degree post-pandemic, educators are grappling with finding new methods to re-engage students in the classroom using a range of modalities. This case study explored student reactions to flipped classroom learning experiences, and possible relationship between the flipped classroom technique and academic performance in communication education. As a student-centric pedagogical method, the flipped classroom can offer a promising remedy for student disengagement, and the findings of this study provide supporting evidence for this conclusion. Students characterized flipped classroom as a very favorable learning experience as it 1) motivated and engaged them in the course, 2) encouraged them to make creative connections across course topics, 3) provided a self-paced, flexible learning environment, and 4) facilitated an authentic experience with the course material for deeper learning. Additionally, the quantitative analysis suggested that flipped classroom may have connections to students’ academic performance in a human communication and technology course. The findings are discussed within the framework of engagement theory, and pedagogical implications are advanced for future practices of flipped classroom within communication pedagogy, particularly as a tool to address increasing student disengagement after the COVID-19 pandemic

Advocating for Occupational Therapy at the Systemic Level
The future of occupational therapy, a commonly misunderstood and underutilized profession, is largely influenced by advocacy at the systemic level. The following capstone project was completed at the American Occupational Therapy Association with the federal advocacy department. The capstone site mentor, Abe Saffer, is a lobbyist who mainly works on workforce, mental health, and school-based occupational therapy issues. Throughout this project, the capstone student advocated for occupational therapy and those that occupational therapy serves through legislation, networking, and by facilitating the development of OTP advocates. Additionally, the student acquired skills to continue to advocate for herself, the clients she works with, and the occupational therapy profession for the remainder of her career. More specifically, she learned about the legislative process, performed a review of legislation from the previous congress, created a capstone student curriculum, attended American Occupational Therapy Political Action Committee (AOTPAC) fundraisers, and attended federal agency meetings throughout this project
