Surface-groundwater connectivity assessment for the Murray Darling Basin

    No full text
    ## **Abstract** \n\nThis dataset and its metadata statement were supplied to the Bioregional Assessment Programme by a third party and are presented here as originally supplied.\n\nSurface-groundwater connectivity assessment across thirteeen reporting regions of the Murray-Darling Basin between March 2005 and June 2006. Connectivity mapping was undertaken by Sinclair Knight Merz (SKM) and Bureau Rural Sciences (BRS). CSIRO compiled a whole of basin coverage as part of the Murray-Darling Basin Sustainable Yields project.\n\n\n\nKey Words: WATER Surface water, Mapping; WATER Groundwater, Mapping; Surface-groundwater INTERACTIONS\n\n\n\nThis dataset has been provided to the BA Programme for use within the programme only. Third parties may request a copy of the data from CSIRO. http://www.csiro.au/en/Research/LWF/Areas/Water-resources/Assessing-water-resources/Sustainable-yields/MurrayDarlingBasin\n\n## **Purpose** \n\nOriginal dataset stored at \\\\wron\\Project\\MDB\\All_MDB\\Groundwater\\_SW-GW_connectivity\n\n## **Dataset History** \n\nParameter List: \n\nOriginal attribute tables were edited to provide a uniform flux convention to/from river/groundwater for losing and gaining streams. Direction and magnitude of water flux (ML/day/km) is described for river segments in the xxxx attribute.\n\n\n\nProcessing Steps: \n\nMethodology for determining direction and magnitude of water flux is detailed in report. Assessment were conducted on 13 of the 18 Reporting Regions for the MDBSY project. This data set is a compilation of the 13 regions.\n\n\n\nTools: \n\nArcGIS 9.3 was used to combine the data from thirteen regions into one (whole of basin) coverage.\n\n## **Dataset Citation** \n\nCSIRO (2010) Surface-groundwater connectivity assessment for the Murray Darling Basin. ## **Abstract** \n\nThe dataset was derived by the Bioregional Assessment Programme from multiple source datasets. The source datasets are identified in the Lineage field in this metadata statement. The processes undertaken to produce this derived dataset are described in the History field in this metadata statement.\n\n\n\nThis dataset contains the selection of 30 model output files of the alluvial Avon and Karuah modflow models for which the waterbalance is reported in product GLO2.5 Water balance\n\n## **Dataset History** \n\nThe dataset contains the modflow output lst-files for the Avon alluvial modflow model and the Karuah alluvial modflow model required to populate the tables in product GLO 2.5, water balance.\n\n\n\nThe file name convention is modelmodel-scenscen_runidrunid.lst with\n\nmodelmodel: 'gloc' for Avon and 'karuah' for Karuah\n\nscenscen: 'base' for baseline and 'crdp' for coal resource development pathway\n\nrunidrunid: the runid that corresponds to the model run and the parameter combination from the design of experiment runs\n\n\n\nThe 30 runs are chosen to be the top 30 runs, ranked according to their objective function score, as explained in product GLO 2.5.\n\n\n\nThe list file is a MODFLOW output file to which runtime and convergence information is written to, as well as an overall water balance of the entire model for each simulated stress period. More detail on the structure of the list file can be found in the MODFLOW documentation (http://water.usgs.gov/nrp/gwsoftware/modflow2000/MFDOC/index.html?introduction.htm)\n\n\n\nReferences:\n\nHerron N, Crosbie R, Viney N, Peeters L and Zhang Y (2016) Water balance assessment for the Gloucester subregion. ## **Abstract** \n\nThe dataset was derived by the Bioregional Assessment Programme. This dataset was derived from multiple datasets. The parent datasets are identified in the Lineage Field in this metadata statement. The History Field in this metadata statement describes how this dataset was derived.\n\n\n\nThis dataset contains contains shapefiles and excel spreadsheets depicting the surface water (30), groundwater (192) and GDE (71) receptor locations for the Gloucester subregion.\n\n## **Dataset History** \n\nReceptors were derived as follows:\n\n\n\nSURFACE WATER RECEPTORS: \n\n\n\n21 of the surface water receptors were derived by location the catchment outflow locations of the Gloucester "Asset catchment" polygons. That is Asset polygons where Class = 'River or stream reach, tributary, anabranch or bend'. Outflow locations were determined by identifying the cell of maximum flow accumulation (using the GA 9sec d8 flow direction raster) within the catchment polygon. These were reviewed and some points were manually nudged to snap to the geofabric cartographic streamlines. The d8 derived points are identified in the data as Type = 'Catchment Outflow'\n\n\n\nThe remaining 9 SW receptors were manually located to capture points of interest, namely upstream and downstream of existing and proposed mining operations.\n\n\n\nGROUNDWATER RECEPTORS:\n\n\n\nThe 192 groundwater receptors are derived from selected bore locations depicted in the the Assets DB, Element_points, namely where AssetList.M0 = 'Yes' AND AssetList.SubGroup = 'Groundwater management zone or area (surface area)' . Three notional bores (ElementID: _ECON_193, _ECON_194 & _ECON_195) from this selection are omitted to arrive at 192 Groundwater receptor locations.\n\n\n\nGDE RECEPTORS:\n\n\n\nGDE receptors are derived from the NSW Office of Water GDE dataset and were created as follows.\n\n\n\nThe 71 GDE receptors were located in groundwater dependent ecosystems, as identified by the NSW Office of Water (Kuginis et al. draft). Two criteria were used to identify suitable receptor locations. The following methodology was used to locate GDE receptors:\n\n1.\tThe 3285 GDE polygons within the Gloucester PAE were reduced to 903 patches by combining contiguous polygons using the 'Dissolve' tool in ARCGIS 10.1. \n\n2.\tThese patches were classified into those that lay above the alluvium (159) and those that did not lie above the alluvium (744).\n\n3.\tWe selected patches larger than 4ha as representing more intact and higher ecological value patches of GDE outside of the alluvial zone; however, above the alluvium, where interaction between groundwater and vegetation was most likely, we selected patches that were as small as 1ha to locate receptors (see explanation below)\n\n4.\tReceptors were then located in the centroid of each patch using the 'Feature to Point (inside)' tool in ARCGIS 10.1.\n\n## **Dataset Citation** \n\nBioregional Assessment Programme (XXXX) GLO Receptors 20150518.
