    Indicators of Catchment Condition in the Intensive Land Use Zone of Australia – Soil acidification hazard

    \n\nIt should be noted that this data is now somwhat dated!\n\nAustralia has naturally and widely occurring acid soils, but the extent has\nbeen increased by agricultural practices since European settlement,\nprincipally through the export of calcium in agricultural products, the use of\nacid-producing fertilisers, the widespread use of legumes, the leaching of\nsoluble anions (particularly nitrates) below the root zone of annual crops and\npastures, and insufficient use of lime to replace lost calcium (SoE, 1998).\n\nAcidification impacts on biophysical condition by producing soils that are\nsuitable only for a narrow range of plants and few crops (which typically\nprefer a soil pH of 5.5 a 7.0) and limits crop productivity and agricultural\nflexibility.\n\nDrainage waters have a lower base status and are likely to have low biotic\nrichness.\n\nThe Digital Atlas of Australian Soils (1:2M) has been assessed in terms of\nacid buffering capacity.\n\nThe NLWR land-use map (1:1M) has been used to determine areas of intensive\nagriculture.\n\nIntensive agriculture is defined as cropping and improved pasture practices,\nas these land-uses tend to involve significant fertiliser use.\n\nWhere these land-use practices coincide with areas with an inherently low acid\nbuffering capacity (i.e. most vulnerable to acidification), a soil\nacidification risk is defined.\n\nThe methodology is sound, but data reliability is low.\n\nThe indicator assumes that naturally acidic soils are at risk of greater\nacidity through intensive land-use activities.\n\nThis indicator cannot be interpreted unequivocally because land management\npractices are ignored.\n\nThe indicator has not been validated against the assessment question.\n\nThe main areas of acidification hazard are in the temperate and Mediterranean\nclimate zones of southern Australia.\n\nThe affected areas include most of the ILZ in Western Australia (Albany Coast,\nFrankland, Donnelly, Blackwood, Busselton, Collie, Murray, Avon, Greenough,\nMurchison basins) and Victoria (Campaspe, Loddon, Portland), southeastern\ncatchments in South Australia (Glenelg, Fleurieu Peninsula, Myponga and\nWakefield).\n\nThe tablelands and western slopes of New South Wales show areas of higher\nacidity hazard in the finer scale assessments.\n\nTasmania, Queensland and the Northern Territory are rated in the better\ncategories.\n\nData are available as:\n\n * continental maps at 5km (0.05 deg) cell resolution for the ILZ;\n * spatial averages over CRES defined catchments (CRES, 2000) in the ILZ;\n * spatial averages over the AWRC river basins in the ILZ.\n\nSee [further metadata](http://data.daff.gov.au/anrdl/metadata_files/pa_iccilr9ab\n__07721axx.xml) for more detail.\n\npa_iccilr9ab__07721axx.xml - <br/&gt

    \n\nIt should be noted that this data is now somwhat dated!\n\nNutrients can enter streams from point, diffuse from various extensive land-\nuses or natural sources. In this indicator only industrial point sources\n(mines, quarries and chemical plants) and intensive agricultural production\nand urban point sources (abattoirs, dairy, livestock production, sewerage) are\nconsidered. The Wild Rivers data set (Environment Australia) includes national\ndata on point sources of pollution (1:250K).\n\nThis data set can be separated into industrial (mines, quarries, chemical)\npoint sources and nutrient point sources (abattoirs, dairy, livestock\nproduction, sewage). These data were obtained from state and federal sources\nand much of the contaminated sites, chemical pollution and nutrient pollution\ndata are far from comprehensive (i.e. available for NSW, Victoria and SA\nonly).\n\nReliability of the available data is good, but the data set is incomplete.\nOnly nutrient point source data is used in this indicator. The density of\nnutrient point sources is not an unequivocal indicator of excessive nutrient\nlevels in nearby waterways, since diffuse agricultural sources and natural\nsources are not included. As for the industrial point sources, there is no\ndistinction made between types of nutrients exported, discharge magnitude and\nfrequency, existing environmental safe guards and proximity to stream network.\n\nInterpretation is also confounded by the incompletedness of the data set. At\nbest, this is an indicator of nutrient hazard. It has not been validated\nagainst the assessment question. The 500 and AWRC maps give a similar picture,\nwith the major point sources located in the Murray-Darling Basin and central\nVictoria.     \n\nIt should be noted that this data is now somwhat dated!\n\nFeral animals impact on catchment condition by added grazing pressure,\ncompetition with native animals and by increased ground and water disturbance.\nFeral animals can also host and distribute diseases such as Brucellosis and\nmange. Rabbits and goats are renowned for their grazing impact, and including\npigs, can cause severe ground disturbance leading to erosion. Foxes and cats\nare predatory on many native species and also transmit diseases. Buffalo cause\nmuddying of waterways and can harbour Brucellosis. Buffalo, horses and goats\ncan also assist the spread of weeds.\n\nFeral animal density is an indicator of the extent to which Australia has been\ncolonised by a range of exotic fauna species. Native species numbers and\ndistributions have declined through direct predation, such as by foxes and\ncats, overgrazing by rabbits and goats to changing habitat conditions through\ncompetition for available resources. This issue is difficult to address at a\ncatchment scale due to animal mobility.\n\nRegional/national strategies are required (eg. use of calicivirus to wipe out\nrabbits). The main areas of Australia with relatively high feral animal counts\nare Gippsland and the mountains of southern NSW. The Victoria River Downs (NT)\nalso shows with high feral animal density. Moderate to poor condition is\notherwise indicated throughout most of eastern Australia and in the north of\nW and in the Northern Territory. Feral animal density is generally low in\nmost parts of Tasmania, South Australia, and Western Australia and in the\nRiverina District of New South Wales. The ABARES/CSIRO feral animal coverages\nwere used, which date from the late 1980s.\n\nThe scale of mapping is 1:25M. These maps give qualitative spatial\ndistributions for 22 feral species. Four classes of feral animal density were\ndefined (high, medium, low and none) and assigned a numerical value (3, 2, 1\nand 0). The density values for each species were added for all species, giving\na relative feral animal rating. Given the low resolution of the feral animal\ncoverages, only a broad regional picture is possible.     2019 APS employee census

    The 2019 APS employee census was administered to all available Australian Public Service (APS) employees. This census approach provides a comprehensive view of the APS and ensures no eligible respondents are omitted from the survey sample, removing sampling bias and reducing sample error. The census' content is designed to establish the views of APS employees on workplace issues such as leadership, learning and development, and job satisfaction. The census ran from 6 May to 7 June 2019. Overall, 104,471 APS employees responded to the employee census, a response rate of 77%.\r\n\r\nPlease be aware that the very large number of respondents to the employee census means these files are over 200 mb in size.     mySwitch TV coverage prediction data

    When digital television was introduced to Australia, the mySwitch website was set up to help viewers and installers retune digital televisions as analog services were decommissioned. By entering a street address into mySwitch, viewers can see if television signal coverage is available and, if so, which transmitter is likely to provide the best signal. When the digital TV restack process was completed, mySwitch was retained to assist viewers and installers to retune TVs to the new channel arrangements.\r\n\r\nmySwitch relies on comprehensive, terrain-based coverage modelling generated by the ACMA’s state-of-the-art coverage prediction tools. This data has now been made available to the public, and may be used to support other projects or applications.\r\n\r\nPlease note that while the mySwitch data has been updated from time to time as new TV transmissions are commissioned, the transmitter data and files reflect coverage predictions as at 2014 for the great majority of sites. Therefore, there may be some differences between the mySwitch data and the current situation.
