    Statement: A Secchi Disc was used to take the measurements of water clarity. The Secchi disc is a standardised water visibility estimate taken by lowering a white disc of about 30 cm diameter into the water and measuring the depth at which it becomes invisible. Data parameter: secchi disc depth (m).Statement: A Secchi Disk measures water clarity. Water clarity may be affected by three different factors -- algae, sediment and / or water color.<b>Credit</b><br/>You, John<b>Purpose</b><br/>To analyse water clarity data collected during a high precipitation event over the Sydney Harbour catchment in order to determine how the Port Jackson estuary behaves under these conditions.The Sydney Harbour catchment area includes a number of different river systems which drain into the Port Jackson estuary. During high rainfall events the catchment areas behave differently to deliver contaminants into the Port Jackson estuary. Under conditions of high rainfall contaminants are delivered to areas very quickly as freshwater slides over the top of the denser more saline waters of the estuary. Secchi Disc samples were taken along the Port Jackson estuary over four days to determine the behaviour of the freshwater plume as it travels in a layer of freshwater to be flushed or flocculate out at some point in the estuary

    Maintenance and Update Frequency: continualStatement: Camera Site Hardware - The cameras and associated hardware permit live streaming video from multiple locations. The camera systems can be located in surf life saving clubs, lifeguard towers, marine rescue or coast guard premises, hotels or other privately-owned buildings, and can be established in remote locations if required. The cameras are securely mounted and housed to guard against inclement weather and vandalism. Each camera location consists of a phone line connection with an ADSL modem or Motorola wireless link, UPS backup, hub network, robotic Sony PTZ controllable camera and remote reboot/restart equipment. The Dell Optiplex computer system, Sony IP camera and modem automatically restart and reconnect to the internet if any mains power is interrupted.Statement: In order to create a secure and efficient data environment, Coastalwatch has implemented a state of the art Virtual Private Network (VPN) and have centralised all live video streams and data information in one of Australia's largest data centres, Equinix. Sony cameras deployed by Coastalwatch at the beach and harbour locations are capable of producing TV quality broadcasts, with the only limiting factor being the speed of the telecommunications infrastructure available at telephone exchanges. The site displays live vision from over 90 coastal locations around Australia and overseas. It also provides daily surf reports, swell forecasting, weather information and news; as well as video, photographic and editorial content. <br/><br/>Coastalwatch has also developed a Coastal Conditions Monitoring System, which utilises the camera network to make a significant contribution to safer coastal use and more efficient and cost effective coastal management. This mooring held two S4 Interocean current meters at depths of 11.5m and 5.5m. <br/><br/>Each of these current meters provided two datasets. In the first, the meter integrates the signals over 2 minutes every 10 minutes, providing 10 min sample readings. The second decimated the samples using a running mean to provide hourly intervals. <br/><br/>The data provided includes the eastern and northern tidal components, speed, direction and temperature. The datasets providing the 10 minute sample values also give depth and salinity readings. <br/><br/>**Users should be aware that there appears to be some data corruption in the later stages of the datasets collected from 11.5m. KangasThe Shark Bay Scallop Managed Fishery is Western Australia's most valuable scallop fishery, based on the take of southern saucer scallop. Management of the fishery is complicated by two fishing fleets (prawns and scallops) having access to the scallop stocks. 14 vessels are licensed to fish for scallops only and the 27 vessels in the Shark Bay Prawn fleet can also retain scallops. Total landings for the 2003 season were 155 tonnes.<br/><br/>Catch in this fishery varies widely depending on the strength of recruitment. An annual research survey is carried out, which together with existing detailed biological knowledge, enable an annual catch forecast to be provided. This survey also enables the start date of the fishery to be determined and allows management of the spawning stock.<br/><br/>This project will:<br/><br/> * provide an overview annual report on the status of the shark Bay Scallop Managed Fishery;<br/> * provide management advice as to the long-term sustainability of the Shark Bay Scallop Managed Fishery;<br/> * direct research to maintain Shark Bay scallop resources at ecologically sustainable levels and to maximise economic and social benefits derived from this resource; and<br/> * provide scientific advice to the managers and industry on an ongoing basis.<br/><br/>Time: Ongoing
