files is illustrated below. Column 1 contains the date and time of
a measurement as a 14 digit numeric string. Column 2 represents
the same date and time, but as a decimal day number, where 1.00000
represents midnight of 1 January 1993. Column 3 represents the
current speed in m/s. Column 4 represents the current direction
(towards which the current flows) in degrees. Column 5 represents
the water depth in m.
A several points in the file "-999999" appears in all five columns
and represents the end of a data set download. Each `break' is
followed by the file header. This allows individual data sets to
be easily identified.

Derwent Beach Watch is a collaborative program between councils and state government that tests water quality at 18 swimming sites around the estuary during summer months. <br/>Water samples are collected each Tuesday from the start of December to the end of March and analysed for the faecal indicator bacteria Enterococci (Enteralert method) at the Public health Lab. Because the samples must be cultured, it takes several days to publish the results
Monitoring of Humpback Whales in the Pender Bay, Kimberley region, Western Australia - 2009 to 2012
Statement: Whale counts were conducted over a 5 minute period and recounted every 10 minutes from 7 am to 12pm and 1pm to 5pm. This occurred 2009- 2012 (02/08/09 to 11/11/09, 10/06/10 to 15/11/10, 30/06/11 to 25/10/11 and 29/06/12 to 22/10/12).

Walker: The University of Western Australia (UWA)Eight scientific staff of the Western Australian and Northern Territory Museums completed a survey of 37 marine, five freshwater and two terrestrial stations in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Habitats were sampled for a variety of invertebrate taxa and for fish. This report includes species inventories for most of the taxa sampled. More than 170 species of hard corals, 82 species of echinoderms, 317 species of molluscs, 139 species of decapod crustaceans, 49 species of barnacles, 67 species and higher taxa of polychaete worms and 324 species of fishes were recorded. The Kimberley has quite a high diversity of marine habitats which are dominated by the effects of strong tidal currents and high turbidity resulting in a relatively low faunal diversity. Comments are included on future management options for Kimberley marine ecosystems
Dampier Marine Park Habitat Validation
Statement: The survey was completed between 11 and 13 January 2021 using a drop camera system with live surface feed to capture high definition downwards-facing video footage. A GPS track was recorded during drop camera deployment to allow geo-referencing of the imagery for the purposes of relating the data back to the existing habitat map. Survey sites were pre-determined and positioned within and at the boundaries of the ‘unconfirmed coral’ habitat. A single transect was surveyed at each location within a 100 m radius area of the predetermined site. Transects were typically between 100 – 300 m long and surveyed at a speed of <2kt.
Qualitative analysis of the video footage was completed in real time to provide a general description of the communities and habitats observed along each transect. Post survey, the recorded video footage was analysed further and the transects were classified based on the habitat and substrate types found. When observed, the average percentage of mixed benthos cover along a transect was estimated if possible. Assessments were conducted by qualified marine scientists with greater than 10 years’ experience in mapping habitats of the Pilbara.<b>Credit</b><br/>This research was conducted in Dampier Marine Park under license number PA2020-00079, issued by the Director of National Parks, Australia.MScience conducted a restricted habitat mapping exercise on behalf of Robe River Mining to confirm the type and location of a benthic habitat class mapped and identified previously by satellite. Transects were recorded through field use of a drop camera and video. Habitat type within the transects were assigned a class by experienced marine scientists and the data used to update a GIS of habitats of the area
Derwent Estuary Ambient Water Quality monitoring program - Site U19
Maintenance and Update Frequency: asNeededStatement: The DEP monitoring program achieves Quality Assurance (field sampling and laboratory activities are carried out in a way that ensures the generation of accurate and reliable results) through the use of standard operating procedures that are used by the three different sampling operators. The majority of collected water samples are analysed by Analytical Services Tasmania (AST), a NATA-accredited laboratory, to ensure that consistent analytical methods are used. For those parameters measured using field-based equipment(salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and chlorophyll-a), regular inter-calibration exercises have been carried out between operators.
Quality Control (activities or techniques to ensure that all quality requirements are being met) is achieved by the use of specific control samples, including the use of an artificial seawater standard for use of 'nutrient field blanks'(treated like a collected sample and filtered in the field) and 'nutrient trip blanks' (sample bottles that are not opened, but are handled and stored in the same manner as other samples). 'Metal field blanks' and 'metal trip blanks' are also used, consisting of deionised water.<b>Credit</b><br/>Norske Skog<b>Credit</b><br/>NyrstarSite U19 is sampled monthly by Norske Skog as part of the Derwent Ambient Water Quality monitoring program.<br/>Since 2003, ambient water quality monitoring has been carried out on a monthly basis at up to 28 sites throughout the Derwent estuary by Norske Skog Boyer, Nyrstar Hobart and the State Government. Monitoring is carried out by three different boat-based sampling parties, but is co-ordinated to occur on the same day each month. <br/>At each site, in-situ field measurements are taken using calibrated sensors for temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen and turbidity. Water clarity is also measured using a secchi disk. Surface and bottom water samples are collected for analysis of true color, total suspended solids(TSS), total and dissolved nutrients, organic carbon and zinc. at most sites, depth integrated samples are also collected for chlorophyll a using a plastic tube. Bottom samples in the Middle and Outer estuary are collected using a niskin bottle. Pumps are used in the upper estuary site to fill up the bottles. All water samples are analysed at Analytical Service Tasmania, a National Association of Testing Authorities-accredited laboratory. Monitoring site depth is 2 meter
Holocene evolutionary history and accumulation rates for the granite based MacGillivray Reef System, Northern Great Barrier Reef
Maintenance and Update Frequency: notPlannedStatement: Reef cores were obtained using a hydraulic rotary drill with diamond and tungsten drill heads (3.5 cm diameter) powered by a petrol generator. The drill string was constructed of 1 and 1.5 m long rods and the whole system was flushed with seawater to aid drilling using a petrol generated water pump. Cored material was recovered every 0.5 to 1m by manually removing the entire drill stream from the core hole.
Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon dating was performed at the Department of Nuclear Physics, Australian National University, Canberra. Reef drilling was undertaken to investigate the Holocene evolution of the reef using radiocarbon dating of the cored coral material.<br/><br/>Two windward and two leeward cores were recovered from MacGillivray Reef. Two of the cores were initiated through thrown up coral blocks on the leeward margin which allowed a longer drilling window during the tidal range. Cores Mac 3 and 5 were abandoned due to the rising tide and equipment failure respectively; Mac 4 was abandoned after encountering a thick sand layer. The maximum depth reached was 11 m and 15 m an the windward and leeward margins respectively.<br/><br/>The cores were logged and photographed, and thin sections were made and petrographically examined. Corals that were determined to be in situ (by the orientation of their corallites) and free from internal cement and detritus by microscope examination were selected for radiocarbon dating.<br/><br/>Radiocarbon dating suggests that MacGillivray platform reef developed on a topographic high, which is assumed to be granite, at a depth of 15 m below the reef flat approximately 8.2 cal kyr BP. The reef only approached present day sea-level within the last 500 years (260 - 80 cal yr BP). Rates of vertical accretion ranged from 1.4 to 5.8 m/kyr
