    This file contains temperature records based on TEX86, TEX86OH, %OH, RI-OH, RI-OH', OHC, UK'37 from three sediment cores. Sediment core Co1010 was retrived from the Prydez Bay, ODP 1235 from the Chilean margin and ODP 1078 from Angola margin. This dataset is related to the study 'Evaluating isoprenoidal hydroxylated GDGT-based temperature proxies in surface sediments from the global ocean'

    Are ecosystem traits fixed or flexible: A study on clonal expansion strategies in co-occurring dune grasses - data

    Many vegetated coastal ecosystems are formed through ecosystem engineering by clonal vegetation. Recent work highlights that the spatial shoot organization of the vegetation determines local sediment accretion and subsequently emerging landscape morphology. While this key engineering trait has been found to differ between species and prevailing environmental conditions, it remains unknown how the interplay of both factors drive shoot organization and therefore landscape morphology. Here, we compared the spatial shoot organization of young, clonally expanding plants of the two dominant European dune grass species: sand couch (Elytrigia juncea) and marram grass (Ammophila arenaria) across a range of coastal dune environments (from Denmark to France). Our results reveal that, on average, sand couch deployed a more dispersed shoot organization than marram grass, which has a patchy (L?vy-like) organization. Whereas sand couch exhibited the same expansion strategy independent of environmental conditions, marram grass demonstrated a large intraspecific variation which correlated to soil organic matter, temperature, and grain size. Shoot patterns ranged from a clumped organization correlating to relatively high soil organic matter contents, temperature, and small grain sizes, to a patchy configuration with intermediate conditions, and a dispersed organization with low soil organic matter, temperature, and large grain size. We conclude that marram grass is flexible in adjusting its engineering capacity in response to environmental conditions, while sand couch instead follows a fixed expansion strategy, illustrating that shoot organization results from the interaction of both species-specific and environmental-specific trait expression

    Data from: Space-time analyses of sediment composition reveals synchronized dynamics at all intertidal flats in the Dutch Wadden Sea

    Here we present median grain size (micrometer) and mud content (%) data of the entire intertidal Dutch Wadden Sea that was sampled every year between 2009 and 2019. As can be read in the accompanying paper, the raw data were taken on a 500 m grid and on randomly located stations. Between 4,051 and 4,246 samples were collected and analyzed every year, which made a total of 45,808 over the study period. Most of the sampling took place in the months between June and August and the stations were not sampled at the same dates across years. Sampling stations were visited by foot during low tide and by boat during high tide. Sediment samples were taken with a small core with a diameter of 33 mm from the surface of the intertidal flats to a depth of 4 cm and then frozen at -20 degrees C. In the laboratory, the samples were freeze-dried for up to 96 h and then homogenized with a mortar and pestle. Homogenized samples were weighed and placed into 13 ml polypropylene auto-sampler tubes with degassed water that was purified by means of reverse osmosis. Grain size distributions were measured with a particle size analyzer which uses laser diffraction and Polarization Intensity Differential Scattering technology (Coulter LS 13 320, optical module 'grey'). It measures grain sizes from 0.04 to 2000 micrometer in 126 size classes. It is important to note that our samples were not treated with hydrogen chloride and hydrogen peroxide to remove calcium and organic material.     Lagrangian Particle tracks in the Irminger Current using OceanParcels within the ocean model POP

    The dataset contains particle tracks along the OSNAP East line in the Irminger Sea (from Cape Farewell to the top of the Reykjanes Ridge) using OceanParcels within the ocean-only model POP. We release particles every day for one year and track them backwards in time for five years to identify pathways and sources of the Irminger Current. In the vertical particles are released every 50 meters from the surface to 2000 meters depth. In the horizontal the spacing is approximately 6km. The data were saved in netcdf formats and are published here as matfiles (*parcles_backward*.mat). netCDF files can be accessed upon request. Python code on the particle tracking is published as well. For the study we performed the following processing: After tracking for one year, we perform a quality control procedure on the particle tracks to check for particles that display unrealistic behavior, in particular particles that unexpectedly stop moving which might be related to the tracking software. When that occurs, we exclude the remainder of the track. We only include particle tracks longer than 50 days. As our goal is to identify the potential different sources of the two Irminger Current cores we need to make sure that tracks are sufficiently long to travel from the Iceland Basin to the release location. Preliminary analyses showed more than 90% of the particles coming from the Iceland Basin cross the Reykjanes Ridge and reach the release location within less than 50 days. Those files are saved as *cleaned_files.mat

    Temporal dynamics of heatwaves are key drivers of sediment mixing by bioturbators

    Heatwaves affect tidal flat ecosystems by altering the bioturbating behavior of benthic species, with potential consequences for sediment oxygenation, particle mixing, and erodibility. Although the frequency and duration of heatwaves are expected to increase under global warming scenarios, we lack insights into how heatwaves' temporal dynamics affect bioturbating behaviors. Using the widely distributed bioturbator Cerastoderma edule as model species, we quantified how heatwaves with identical heat-sum but different temporal dynamics (i.e., 3-day vs. 6-day heating and normal temperature cycles) affect bioturbating behaviors and the sediment mixing processes in tidal mesocosms. Our results show that short but frequent 3-day heatwave cycles increased the magnitude of bioturbating behaviors, thereby resulting in more bio-mixed sediment than observed under infrequent prolonged 6-day heatwave cycles. This unexpected result could be ascribed to the weakening health condition indicated by a high death rate (47.37%) under 6-day heatwave cycles than in 3-day and no-heatwave control cycles. Present findings reveal that the impact of heatwaves on sediment bioturbation will strongly depend on the temporal dynamics of future heatwaves: bioturbation will be enhanced unless the heatwave duration exceeds species resistance and increases mortality

    This file contains raw X-ray fluorescence and line scan data of regular 'Knox cyclothem' alternations in two short intervals (J45de and J60d) of drill-core DD98SGP001. Core DD98SGP001 contains banded iron formation of the lower Paleoproterozoic Joffre Member of the Brockman Iron Formation and was drilled in 1998 at Silvergrass Peak (22 03'29.9''S, 116 50' 06.0''E) in the Hamersley Range, Western Australia; the core is currently stored at the Perth Core Library of the Geological Survey of Western Australia. The scanned interval J45de is from 289.05 - 290.26 m depth in the core (box 45, rows d and e) and contains cherty iron formation-type cyclothems. The scanned interval 60d is from 358.34 - 358.73 m depth in the core (box 60, row d) and contains shaley carbonate-type cyclothems

    This dataset contains a high-resolution (1 measurement every 30 seconds) time series of surface ocean pH in the South Pacific Ocean measured with a PyroScience fiber-based pH sensor (PHROBSC-PK8T) and cross-calibrated using discrete carbonate system observations (total alkalinity and dissolved inorganic carbon). The measurements were collected during R/V Sonne cruise SO289 in February-April 2022,as part of the GEOTRACES GP21 research programme to build an understanding of the distribution, origins, and depletions of trace elements and their isotopes (TEIs) in a lesser-explored ocean region. Bad results from technical issues during analysis have been removed from these results, so there are no recognised issues. The NIOZ created the metadata entry and is responsible for holding master copies of the data
