    Exploring the Needs for Indigenous Allyship among Postsecondary International Students in Canada

    This mixed-methods study taps into the salient features of knowledge mobilization and sociocultural conditions that shape postsecondary international student experiences with Indigenous cultures and commitment to allyship—a consistent gap identified in the literature. In the qualitative phase, international students from a Canadian university participated in a semistructured interview inviting them to share their Indigenous learning experiences and reflections on their allyship. The quantitative phase involved international students who completed a questionnaire, interpreted with principal component analysis (PCA) and correlation analyses. The findings highlighted several themes underlying international student–Indigenous allyship: multicultural contexts, sources of learning, perceptions of indigeneity, cultural similarities, and sociocultural barriers. Key gaps emerged in the relational contexts of allyship, access to cross-cultural opportunities, and weaving Indigenous-led knowledge in curricula. Most importantly, the findings suggest that the international student–Indigenous allyship is a complex sociopolitical process beyond acculturation and intercultural competence, which requires critical discussions on international students’ roles in settler colonialism and decolonization

    PolyLLM: polypharmacy side effect prediction via LLM-based SMILES encodings

    Polypharmacy, the concurrent use of multiple drugs, is a common approach to treating patients with complex diseases or multiple conditions. Although consuming a combination of drugs can be beneficial in some cases, it can lead to unintended drug-drug interactions (DDI) and increase the risk of adverse side effects. Predicting these adverse side effects using state-of-the-art models like Large Language Models (LLMs) can greatly assist clinicians. In this study, we assess the impact of using different LLMs to predict polypharmacy. First, the chemical structure of drugs is vectorized using several LLMs such as ChemBERTa, GPT, etc., and are then combined to obtain a single representation for each drug pair. The drug pair representation is then fed into two separate models including a Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) and a Graph Neural Network (GNN) to predict the side effects. Our experimental evaluations show that integrating the embeddings of Deepchem ChemBERTa with the GNN architecture yields more effective results than other methods. Additionally, we demonstrated that utilizing complex models like LLMs to predict polypharmacy side effects using only chemical structures of drugs can be highly effective, even without incorporating other entities such as proteins or cell lines, which is particularly advantageous in scenarios where these entities are not available

    Investigation into Efficacy and Mechanisms of Neuroprotection of Ashwagandha Root Extract and Water-Soluble Coenzyme Q10 in a Transgenic Mouse Model of Alzheimer’s Disease

    Background: Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is one of the most prevalent neurodegenerative disorders and the most common form of dementia. Although current treatments examine disease progression, many have side effects and primarily target symptomatic relief as opposed to halting further neurodegeneration. Objective: The current study aims to determine the neuroprotective effects of water-soluble coenzyme Q10 (Ubisol-Q10) and an ethanolic Ashwagandha extract (E-ASH) on a transgenic mouse model of AD. Methods: A variety of immunofluorescence staining of biomarkers was conducted to assess mechanisms commonly implicated in the disease. Additionally, spatial and non-spatial memory tests evaluated cognitive functions at two timepoints throughout the progression of the disease. Results: A substantial reduction in microglial activation and amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques when treated with a combination of natural health products (NHPs), Ubisol-Q10 and E-ASH. Moreover, activation of autophagy was upregulated in both the Ubisol-Q10 and combination (Ubisol-Q10+E-ASH given as a combined “Tonic” solution) groups. Oxidative stress was decreased across treated groups, while astrocyte activation was elevated in both the E-ASH and Tonic group. The Tonic group expressed an elevation in the fluorescent intensity of neuronal nuclei (NeuN) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels. Interestingly, treatment with E-ASH and Ubisol-Q10 enhanced synaptic vesicle formation compared to controls. Pre-mortem memory tests revealed the treatments to be effective at preserving cognitive abilities. Conclusions: Based on these findings, the combination of E-ASH and Ubisol-Q10 may effectively mitigate the various mechanisms implicated in AD and ultimately prevent further disease progression

    Production of Exopolysaccharides Through Fermentation of Secondary Whey with Kefir Grains

    The cheese industry produces millions of tons of lactose-rich whey yearly, of which 50% is discharged into water and soil, leading to significant environmental challenges. In Mexico, cheese whey is repurposed for traditional cheese production. However, another by-product named secondary whey (SW) remains. This study focused on the production of exopolysaccharides (EPSs) via SW fermentation of kefir grains, yielding 632.6 ± 30.8 mg/L of a freeze-dried solid, and the carbohydrate-to-protein ratio stood at 2.89, corresponding to the bound EPS protein content. Through the analysis of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) spectra, it was determined that EPSs were successfully produced, as a signal was observed between 1200 and 1000 cm−1, characteristic of the glycosidic bonds in polysaccharides

    Navigating Uncertainty: Advanced Techniques in Pedestrian Intention Prediction for Autonomous Vehicles—A Comprehensive Review

    The World Health Organization reports approximately 1.35 million fatalities annually due to road traffic accidents, with pedestrians constituting 23% of these deaths. This highlights the critical need to enhance pedestrian safety, especially given the significant role human error plays in road accidents. Autonomous vehicles present a promising solution to mitigate these fatalities by improving road safety through advanced prediction of pedestrian behavior. With the autonomous vehicle market projected to grow substantially and offer various economic benefits, including reduced driving costs and enhanced safety, understanding and predicting pedestrian actions and intentions is essential for integrating autonomous vehicles into traffic systems effectively. Despite significant advancements, replicating human social understanding in autonomous vehicles remains challenging, particularly in predicting the complex and unpredictable behavior of vulnerable road users like pedestrians. Moreover, the inherent uncertainty in pedestrian behavior adds another layer of complexity, requiring robust methods to quantify and manage this uncertainty effectively. This review provides a structured and in-depth analysis of pedestrian intention prediction techniques, with a unique focus on how uncertainty is modeled and managed. We categorize existing approaches based on prediction duration, feature type, and model architecture, and critically examine benchmark datasets and performance metrics. Furthermore, we explore the implications of uncertainty types—epistemic and aleatoric—and discuss their integration into autonomous vehicle systems. By synthesizing recent developments and highlighting the limitations of current methodologies, this paper aims to advance the understanding of Pedestrian intention Prediction and contribute to safer and more reliable autonomous vehicle deployment
