Understanding the availability and use of pharmacotherapy interventions for Taenia solium related diseases in Northern Peru
No full textGlobally, Taenia solium contributes to an estimated 2.8 million disability-adjusted life years per year, the most significant public health burden of any foodborne parasite. In communities where T. solium is endemic, the dual threat of taeniasis (the intestinal infection) and epilepsy caused by neurocysticercosis (NCC, the central nervous system [CNS] infection) causes extensive population morbidity and complicates community-based health care delivery. Despite its impact, as a neglected tropical disease, the available evidence on safe and appropriate healthcare practices for T. solium-related diseases also remains neglected. This dissertation research addresses these gaps by 1) describing the prevalence of viable NCC among individuals being considered for treatment of taeniasis, 2) assessing the relationship between NCC and time to seizure control among people with epilepsy initiating ASM treatment, and 3) examining the association between the epilepsy treatment gap and health related quality of life, stratified by NCC. All three aims represent populations living in Northern Peru – an area highly endemic with T. solium
Addressing economic inequities between workers and owners in the food system: an exploration of the concepts and practices of solidarity economies
Get PDFThe purpose of this Capstone Research Synthesis is to address economic inequities between workers and owners in the food system. This research is motivated by experience and witnessing the harms of this pervasive social problem. To address this social problem, this research examines alternative economic concepts and practices that do not reproduce the maldistribution of resources that workers experience relative to owners in the food system. The Overall Research Question asks, how do the concepts and practices of solidarity economy address maldistribution of resources between workers and owners in the U.S. food system? To address this question, I used directed content analysis as the method to collect data from three solidarity economy networks base to examine how solidarity economy concepts and practices address three aspects of maldistribution, which are exploitation, marginalization, and deprivation. I found that many solidarity economy concepts and practices can address the three aspects of maldistribution, but several could be further specified to ensure that their application does not reproduce exploitation, marginalization, and deprivation. Overall, this Capstone Research Synthesis demonstrates that there are economic concepts and practices that represent alternatives to capitalism and do not reproduce maldistribution of resources between workers and owners in the food system. Developing and applying these principles and practices may bring food systems and society closer to social justice
