Optimization of a tablet-based depression screening workflow in rural primary care
Depression is a common mood disorder with 8.3% of Americans above the age of 15 reporting a major depressive episode in 2021. This quality improvement (QI) project took place at a primary care clinic serving a rural community in Oregon where roughly a quarter of adults reported having depression in 2017. This QI project sought to improve staff perceptions of accuracy and efficiency of the Clinic’s depression screening process, achieve greater staff satisfaction with provider notification of screening results, and increase depression screening rates
Medication storage safety for older adult caregivers to decrease accidental overdoses in children
A literature review indicating that a one-time educational talk about medication storage safety for older adult caregivers can lead to sustained behavioral modification correlated with decreased risk of accidental pediatric overdoses
The impact of online medical control physician involvement on outcomes for calls related to emergency medical services patient refusals
This study investigates the impact of discussion between online medical control and patients who refuse transport to the hospital by emergency medical services. We find that a direct transport recommendation by a physician increases subsequent rates of patient transport
Improving postoperative pain management after posterior spinal instrumented fusion for idiopathic adolescent scoliosis
Opioids are commonly prescribed for pain management in patients undergoing Posterior Spinal Instrumentation and Fusion (PSIF) surgeries. Opioids often lead to complications, extended hospitalizations, and reduced patient satisfaction. Adequate pain management requires a multidisciplinary strategy while considering the adverse effects of opioids, necessitating a personalized comprehensive pain management protocol. The objective of this work is to determine adherence to the multimodal pain management algorithm and evaluate the impact of diazepam and gabapentin on opioid usage
Implementing virtual abnormal involuntary movement scale (AIMS) assessments in a rural behavioral health clinic
The aim of this project was to begin the process of implementing virtual abnormal involuntary movement scale (AIMS) assessments on in-person patients at a rural behavioral health clinic. The primary context is that all prescribers do their work remotely by telephone, so the patient is not typically viewed. This project implemented virtual education modules on conducting AIMS exams and a new policy on rooming procedures for patients coming in person to the clinic
Compliance of sepsis bundle completion in persons who use drugs
Sepsis is a life-threatening condition caused by an infectious agent that is responsible for significant mortality world-wide. In order to standardize sepsis-related care, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Quality Initiatives have incorporated evidence-based guidelines set forth by the Surviving Sepsis Campaign in the format of SEP-1 bundle. People who use drugs (PWUD) are at higher risk for developing sepsis and septic shock. Thus, the aim of this project was to determine if the SEP-1 bundle set forth by CMS is met for PWUD with comparable compliance to patients who do not use drugs at a regional medical center
