Interview with Fred Harwin
Fred Harwin is an artist, retired ocularist, and former Director of Medical Graphics for Oregon Health & Science University. In this oral history, Harwin is interviewed by his daughter, Lise Harwin, about his education, his career as a medical illustrator, his second career as founder and Director of the Center for Ocular Prosthetics, and his work illustrating the groundbreaking text The Manual of Cardiac Surgery. Interview with Susan Smith, Ph.D.
Dr. Susan Smith is a senior scientist and Professor Emeritus of Physiology and Pharmacology in the OHSU School of Medicine. Her career has focused on the relationship between reproductive function and brain regulation of food intake; this research has been continually funded by the NIH. Additionally, she served as the Director of the Oregon National Primate Research Center from 1994 to 2007, aiding in the integration of the primate center into OHSU’s infrastructure. In 1997, she served as the founding Director of the OHSU Center for Women’s Health and helped to develop and implement its original vision of a “one-stop shop for women.” In this interview, Dr. Smith reflects on her research as well as the work that the Center for Women’s Health and the Oregon National Primate Research Center have accomplished over the years. She also discusses the culture surrounding research and what drew her to a career in the lab, describing the appeal of the ever-changing field of scientific research
Computationally characterizing communicative content and context in autistic children
Pragmatic language difficulties are common among autistic children, and assessment of pragmatic language skills over time is an important predictor of quality of life outcomes during adulthood. Current metrics for pragmatic language are qualitative in design and are expensive in terms of time and resources. With the use of Natural Language Processing (NLP) methods, robust measures of pragmatic language features can be obtained in an automated, reliable, and relatively inexpensive fashion. Such metrics can be used to augment traditional pragmatic language assessments. Improving our understanding of how autistic individuals use language not only helps us learn how to become better conversational partners ourselves, but also enables us to build language tools that accommodate for pragmatic language differences. In this dissertation, we leverage traditional statistical methods to adapt and augment established NLP techniques to investigate three areas of pragmatic language that autistic children are known to have difficulty with
