Enhancing oncology clinic efficiency and patient-centered care through early referral patient navigation
In 2020 alone, there were 1,603,844 new cancer cases reported in the United States, with 602,347 resulting in death (Cancer Data and Statistics, 2023). Currently, at the Knight Cancer Institute (KCI), patients encounter multiple entry points, including referrals from surgical specialists, primary care providers, or external sources. This results in differing intake workflows for each type of malignancy, and some patients cannot use the established patient navigation system. Research indicates that poor care coordination is associated with medical errors, inadequate symptom management, and increased healthcare utilization and costs (Weaver and Jacobson, 2018). This project seeks to assess the necessary changes for a comprehensive system designed to streamline processes, facilitate early referrals, and enhance patient-centered navigation. Without such improvements, there is a risk that OHSU (Oregon Health Science University) patients with cancer may not receive the full range of services to optimize their treatment
Epidemiology of respiratory infections
The respiratory system is one of the greatest channels through which communicable diseases are spread. In the classification of diseases which are spread by means of the respiratory system are to be found in such maladies as Influenza, Tuberculosis, Diphtheria, Pneumonia, Cerebral spinal meningitis, Measles, Scarlet fever, Smallpox, Whooping cough, Poliomyelitis, Mumps, Tonsillitis (septic sore throat), and others. To consider each of these conditions separately from an epidemiological standpoint, it would require more space than is permitted in a descriptive article of limited scope. For this reason, no mention is made of the epidemiology of those diseases which are thoroughly understood and clear cut from a public health point of view. The common, but less understood, conditions of common cold, sore throat (septic), tonsillitis, sinusitis, etcetera will be considered in more detail. Until within recent years the importance of the common cold and its associated maladies was considered rather trifling, but of late this attitude has changed considerably and it is now realized that a common cold, though it is a mild affair in most cases, is just as serious as one of the so-called serious communicable diseases. In view of the far-reaching consequences which may accompany and follow it, what is said regarding the common cold may also be said for tonsillitis, septic sore throat, and sinusitis. All are similar in many respects, though varying in others.
Hay fever prevalence on the Pacific Coast and the responsible plants
It has been found that in most parts of the United States from 1 to 2 per cent of the population suffer from hay fever at some portion of the year, indicating that its victims may be counted by the hundred thousands. It was not until about 1870 that the relationship of pollen to the disease was established. The development of hay fever about the time of hay harvest led to the belief that this was the cause of the disease. The particular pollens causing this disease were for a long time unidentified
Sewage disposal and waste disposal in Portland
The problem of sewage and waste disposal in Portland is, in reality, two definite and separate subjects of consideration. They must be studied as separate problems because the present sewage system is part of the City of Portland property, while waste disposal is as yet scattered between private and public organizations. Both of these problems have been studied by the Portland City Club. They have however concentrated most of their efforts on the garbage problem, leaving sewage to the City engineer, as it should be left. The problem of garbage disposal is at present the most pressing of the two
The cost of healthy eating
Each year in the United States, 15-20% of 1 million visits to the Emergency Department for Acute Heart Failure result in direct home discharge, with patients often experiencing adverse health outcomes within 30 days after discharge. The multi-centered dissemination and implementation study, “Get With the Guidelines in Emergency Department Patients With Heart Failure” (GUIDED-HF), utilized ‘Self-Care Coaches’ who reach out to participants via telehealth calls to discuss potential improvements in their self-care maintenance after discharge as a strategy to mitigate adverse health outcomes; and offer provisions of resources, including a cookbook, “Don’t Pass the Salt!”, created by the American Association for Heart Failure Nurses (AAHFN). The objective of this research is to investigate if the target population in Portland or Hillsboro can afford an HF-friendly diet on the monthly SNAP income
Improving medication prior authorizations process in an outpatient mental health clinic: a quality improvement project
This quality improvement (QI) project sought to improve the quality of care of patients receiving mental health services in an outpatient clinic in the Pacific Northwest
