Residential segregation and the perinatal health of Asian American subgroups: revealing their heterogeneity through the lens of immigration, racism, and segregation
This dissertation proposes a novel framework for understanding Asian American (AsA) heterogeneity, shaped by colonialism, immigration, and racism. From this grounding, this body of work advances knowledge of perinatal health among AsA subgroups and its association with residential segregation-- a key driver of racial health inequities. Through empirical analysis, this research shows that segregated AsA neighborhoods, like its population, are diverse and have varied associations with preterm birth, a critical public health issue. This work emphasizes the urgent need for systematically disaggregating racial data in public health research and reporting to reveal hidden disparities and inform equitable health strategies
Exploring the role of mechanosensors, with a focus on TMEM63B, in somatosensory coding
TMEM63B is a newly identified mechanosensor that is found in many dorsal root ganglion neurons. Dorsal root ganglion neurons are responsible somatosensation and one aspect of somatosenstion is encoding mechanical forces on the skin like vibration or hairpull. These neurons use molecular sensors to transduce these external forces into neuronal activation, and the molecular sensor for low-threshold forces is PIEZO2. Because the high-threshold sensor is unknow, I attempted to access TMEM63B as a sensor for high-threshold force
Prevention of iron deficiency in female adolescent athletes
Iron deficiency is a common problem worldwide in both developed and developing nations. Iron deficiency and the anemia it can lead to have consequences in development, health, and quality of life of individuals. Particular groups of people are at increased risk for iron deficiency and include those assigned female at birth due to menstrual blood losses, pregnant individuals, children, adolescents, athletes, and those who face food insecurity. In female adolescent athletes specifically, the prevalence of iron deficiency has been estimated to be up to 15-35%. The aforementioned group deserves special attention due to the intersection of multiple risk factors including age, female sex, and increased physical activity. In this paper, the importance of and potential approaches toward educating adolescent female athletes on prevention and awareness of iron deficiency will be discussed
