Drug addiction in the United States

    Get PDF
It is almost impossible at the present time to make an exact count of the persons addicted to narcotics in the United StAtes, or even in one of our large cities because of the social and legal factors tending to make addiction a secret practice. It is believed, however that it is possible by utilizing all of the information now available to delimit the number by certain maximum and minimum figures. With this object in view, a number of the more important narcotic surveys made in recent years were analyzed; also the reports made by agents of the Federal Bureau of Internal Revenue and other persons in the narcotic clinics conducted in different parts of the country; statistics in dose of addiction, world production of narcotics and the quantities imported into this country were compiled and studied. Numerous Physicians in different parts of the country were interviewed in person to ascertain the number of addicts they were treating in the course of their practice. The results of these analyses can be found within this paper

Chiropractic and its relation to public health

    Get PDF
In treating the subject, the writer will not attempt to stress all of the minor faults and shortcomings of the chiropractic because, first, they are so many in member that the length of this paper will not permit of any long drawn out discussion and, second, because it will not be necessary to go into minor details as any open minded reader will be forced to admit these faults. I will merely make the statement that they are injurious to public health and prove the fact by using only one or two examples.

Inequities in chronic stress exposure at the intersection of race, gender, and sexual identity in a nationally representative sample of US adults

    Get PDF
Social inequity rooted in systemic oppression is robustly associated with mental and physical health; chronic stress is highlighted as a key mechanism. Growing evidence supports intersectionality theory, that interlocking systems of oppression (e.g., racism, sexism, heterosexism) may contribute to greater exposure to stressors for those with multiple marginalized identities. Limited research examining the association between sexual identity alone and C-reactive protein (CRP) – an upstream biological marker of chronic stress exposure – has yielded mixed results. The purpose of this project is to examine whether race/ethnicity, gender, and sexual identity interact to produce unequal levels of CRP

Bridging the gap between preclinical models and clinical trials using a novel Kras- and Myc-driven mouse model of pancreatic cancer and 3D-bioprinting

    Get PDF
Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma (PDAc) ranks among the top three most aggressive cancers in the United States and is projected to increase in incidence over the next few years. Standard-of-care (SoC) treatment for PDAc consists of a cocktail of harsh chemotherapies, which have improved overall survival by only a few percentage points—to a 5-year survival rate of 13%. This dismal prognosis is a result of its primarily late-stage diagnosis and lack of durable response to treatment, the latter of which is partially due to PDAc’s desmoplastic and immunosuppressive microenvironment. This dissertation will demonstrate the potential of both the novel KMCERT2 mouse model and 3D-bioprinting to improve our understanding of pancreatic cancer progression and treatment response, ultimately leading to more effective therapies for patients

Problems among county school children causing retardation in school

    Get PDF
In writing for this paper I have taken cases of children who have had difficulty in school or who have some physical handicap which seems to be a stumbling block for them. I have tried to give the results which have been obtained or the results which we hope to attain with these children. Some of the help has seemed to prove helpful or worthwhile with others the results are not so promising
