Discovering molecular differences between pioneer and follower neurons in neural development
Pioneer neurons establish the initial nervous system structure by extending axons toward distant targets, but their molecular distinction from follower neurons was previously unknown. Using single-cell RNA sequencing in zebrafish posterior lateral line neurons, we found that pioneers and followers are transcriptionally distinct. Further, we show that pioneers provide an indispensable scaffold for followers, which cannot extend in the absence of pioneers. Finally, retinoic acid signaling influences pioneer axon targeting by regulating the expression of the neurotrophic factor receptor ret
Improving primary ASCVD prevention through statin therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes: a quality improvement initiative
This quality improvement initiative planned to improve patients’ adherence to statins at the suburban family medicine clinic in the Pacific Northwest by evaluating the primary care providers’ perception and actual patients’ status of statin therapy. The project focused on primary ASCVD prevention in 40 to 75-year-old patients with type 2 diabetes
Improving provider knowledge of school accommodations and confidence when educating families: a quality improvement project
A quality improvement project that sought to increase provider knowledge of school accommodation options and confidence when educating families on such. The project included two interventions: an education video for providers and an educational brochure to be distributed to parents. The results of the project indicate that these interventions are effective tools to use when educating providers and increasing confidence when discussing school accommodations with families
Defining the function of pancreatic cancer HuR in extracellular vesicle signaling within the tumor microenvironment
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an aggressive cancer with poor outcomes, partly due to dysfunctional vascularization and complex tumor-stromal interactions. This dissertation investigates the role of the RNA-binding protein HuR in regulating extracellular vesicle (EV) cargo and signaling within the PDAC tumor microenvironment. We demonstrate that HuR modulates EV content, affecting endothelial cell behavior and vascular integrity, and explore therapeutic strategies to disrupt EV-mediated communication. Our findings reveal novel mechanisms by which HuR contributes to PDAC progression and identify potential targets for improving treatment outcomes
Culture and organizational behavior during project management of mergers in healthcare
Qualitative interviews were used to assess how culture was evaluated and modified during a merger of a multi-specialty partnership. Subgroup analysis showed differing concerns and priorities between administrative physicians, clinical physicians, and non-physicians
Empowering breastfeeding peer counselors: enhancing nutrition education and breastfeeding support at the 2024 and 2025 Oregon and Washington WIC peer counselor retreat
This capstone report outlines a project designed to strengthen the knowledge and effectiveness of WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselors. Through tailored retreats, the project delivered evidence-based education on maternal nutrition and breastfeeding practices, incorporating pre- and post-surveys to evaluate learning outcomes and adapt content to counselor needs. The curriculum emphasized culturally sensitive support, practical tools, and interactive activities to enhance peer counselor confidence and improve maternal-infant health outcomes
Perspectives of the nurse practitioner role in adult intensive care units
As the role of the nurse practitioner (NP) has evolved and scope of practice has recently expanded, the impact and utilization of NP provided care must be evaluated, particularly in the intensive care unit (ICU). This quality improvement project examines the multidisciplinary team members knowledge and perceptions of the NP role across four adult ICUs at an academic hospital in a full practice authority state. A 15-question anonymous survey was distributed to the cardiac, neurosciences, trauma, and medical ICUs specifically targeting the multidisciplinary team and NPs. Through multiple choice and open-ended questions, the goal was to identify knowledge gaps and themes surrounding the NP role, practice impact, and utilization in the ICU setting. Collectively, most responses identified NPs as being a valuable, integral part of the ICU team while supporting incorporation, independence, and onboarding training for new NPs. Findings suggest a need to address knowledge gaps in licensure and delineation of the NP role within the ICU. Results from this survey offer valuable themes to contribute to the development of future initiatives focused on strengthening the NP role and enhancing their impact on patient care in the ICU setting
