Functional and ecological relevance of intraspecific variation in body size and shape in the lizard Podarcis melisellensis (Lacertidae)
Within populations, individual animals may vary considerably in morphology and ecology. The degree to which variation in morphology is related to ecological variation within a population remains largely unexplored. We investigated whether variation in body size and shape among sexes and age classes of the lizard Podarcis melisellensis translates in differential whole-animal performance (sprint speed, bite force), escape and prey attack behaviour in the field, microhabitat use and diet. Male and female adult lizards differed significantly in body size and head and limb proportions. These morphological differences were reflected in differences in bite strength, but not in sprint speed. Accordingly, field measurements of escape behaviour and prey attack speed did not differ between the sexes, but males ate larger, harder and faster prey than females. In addition to differences in body size, juveniles diverged from adults in relative limb and head dimensions. These shape differences may explain the relatively high sprint and bite capacities of juvenile lizards. Ontogenetic variation in morphology and performance is strongly reflected in the behaviour and ecology in the field, with juveniles differing from adults in aspects of their microhabitat use, escape behaviour and diet. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 94, 251 264
Towards a New MAX-DOAS Measurement Site in the Po Valley: Aerosol Optical Depth and NO2 Tropospheric VCDs
Pollutants information can be retrieved from visible (VIS) and ultraviolet (UV) diffuse solar spectra exploiting Multi-AXis Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) instruments. In May 2021, the Italian research institute CNR-ISAC acquired and deployed a MAX-DOAS system SkySpec-2D. It is located in the “Giorgio Fea” observatory in San Pietro Capofiume (SPC), in the middle of the Po Valley, where it has constantly acquired zenith and off-axis diffuse solar spectra since the 1st October 2021. This work presents the retrieved tropospheric NO2 and aerosol extinction profiles (and their columns) derived from the MAX-DOAS measurements using the newly developed DEAP retrieval code. The code has been validated both using synthetic differential Slant Column Densities (dSCDs) from the Fiducial Reference Measurements for Ground-Based DOAS Air-Quality Observations (FRM4DOAS) project and real measured data. For this purpose, DEAP results are compared with the ones obtained with three state-of-the-art retrieval codes. In addition, an inter-comparison with satellite products from Sentinel-5P TROPOMI, for the tropospheric NO2 Vertical Column Densities (VCDs), and MODIS-MAIAC for the tropospheric Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD), is performed. We find a bias of −0.6 × 1015 molec/cm2 with a standard deviation of 1.8 × 1015 molec/cm2 with respect to Sentinel-5P TROPOMI for NO2 tropospheric VCDs and of 0.04 ± 0.08 for AOD with respect to MODIS-MAIAC data. The retrieved data show that the SPC measurement site is representative of the background pollution conditions of the Po Valley. For this reason, it is a good candidate for satellite validation and scientific studies over the Po Valley
First record of an alien species of Amerianna Strand, 1928 (Gatropoda: Hygrophila: Planorbidae) in the Kimpese region, Democratic Republic of Congo
This study provides the first case report of Amerianna species in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), first confirmed presence in Central Africa and the first molecular data from the African continent. The Amerianna species was found during a snail survey focused on schistosomiasis intermediate hosts. After sequence analysis of the partial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) marker, three of these specimens were found to belong to the genus Amerianna. Combining morphological and molecular data, we tentatively identify the three specimens as Amerianna cf. carinata. This species is originally found in Australian freshwater bodies and was first detected in 1983 in several Nigerian man-made waterbodies. Therefore, special care should be taken when mapping Bulinus truncatus, the intermediate host for Schistosoma haematobium, as to not confuse both species as this might misguide snail control
