An updated checklist of the fishes from the upper Malagarazi (Lake Taganyika basin) in Burundi: Implications for an under implementation Malagarazi Nature Reserve
The upper Malagarazi (uM) Basin is situated in Southeastern Burundi and Northwestern Tanzania, and partially covered by the Malagarazi Nature Reserve (MNR). A checklist of fishes from the uM, in Burundi, is presented based on a literature review, a re-examination of historical collections, and a study of new collections (2013 2022). A total of 74 native species, including 14 endemics and two introduced Oreochromis, distributed over 38 genera and 16 families, are reported. Of the aforementioned species, 60 native (81%) and one introduced are present in the MNR. The most important families in the uM and the MNR are the Cyprinidae (21 versus 17 species, respectively) and Cichlidae (12 versus 11). Other families are represented by less than 10 species in both the uM and the MNR. Furthermore, of the 14 species endemic to the uM (19%), only eight (57%) are reported from the MNR; the others are confined to some non-included affluent rivers. Moreover, eight taxa still await formal description. Finally, as some endemic and native species are not included within the current borders of the MNR, adjustments are proposed and the need for a new protected area is considered
Niche-modelling for Afrotropical hover flies (Diptera, Syrphidae): a case study using the invasive species <i>Toxomerus floralis</i>
Knowledge, attitudes and practices toward female genital schistosomiasis among community women and healthcare professionals in Kimpese region, Democratic Republic of Congo
Background Chronic infection with Schistosoma haematobium causes female genital schistosomiasis (FGS), which leads to diverse lesions in the female genital tract and several complications, including infertility and a higher risk for HIV transmission. This study aims to understand the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) toward FGS and associated factors among women and health professionals in the schistosomiasis endemic focus of Kimpese, western Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).Methods In January 2022, two semi-quantitative questionnaires were administered to 201 randomly selected community women in Kifua II village, and to purposely selected health professionals (20 nurses and 41 doctors) from Kimpese Health Zone. KAP statements were coded using Likert scale, summarized as frequencies and percentages, and assessed for internal reliability using Cronbach's alpha. Associations between the socio-demographic characteristics of respondents and the KAP variables were assessed using Pearson chi-square (chi 2) test, Cramer's V (phi) and gamma (gamma) coefficients.Results Overall, respondents had high knowledge of schistosomiasis in general but low FGS-specific knowledge (91% versus 45%). Misconceptions concerned the disease transmission, with 30.3% of women and 25% of the nurses believing that FGS is transmitted by drinking untreated water, while 26.8% of the doctors mentioned sexual contact as a mode of FGS transmission. Negative attitudes included considering FGS not a very serious disease (34.8%), feeling uncomfortable during gynaecological examination (35.3%), difficulties avoiding risky water contact (72.1%) and open defecation/urination (41.3%), not intending to share FGS status with their husbands (38.3%) and loved ones (63.6%), and believing that husbands would leave them if they were infertile (31.8%). Regarding practices, 77.6% of women engaged daily in activities involving contact with water. Practices of health professionals were hampered by the lack of equipment and specialized knowledge for FGS diagnosis with only 57% of healthcare workers having a microscope in their facilities. Women's KAPs varied by age, education, marital status, occupation and monthly income.Conclusion This study highlights insufficient knowledge, existing negative attitudes, at risk practices towards FGS by women, and limitations of FGS management by health professionals. These findings can help for tailored health education and WASH strategies, and call for health professional's capacities reinforcement

Design, manufacturing, and assembly of the GRASS small body gravimeter spring
The GRAvimeter for small Solar System bodies (GRASS) is a novel spring-based gravimeter for the application in extremely low-gravity environments on small bodies in our Solar System. It is one of the Juventas CubeSat payloads as part of the ESA Hera mission to measure the surface gravity on the asteroid moon Dimorphos. The GRASS gravimeter was successfully launched on-board Hera on 7 October 2024. Key element of this instrument is the gravimeter spring, a cantilever-type bending spring, allowing for measurements at arbitrary instrument orientation. This paper presents the design, manufacturing, and integration of the developed sensing element assembly. The spring design can serve as a future reference for data analysis of the gravimeter data obtained in-situ on extraterrestrial surfaces. The manufacturing process is detailed, including the raw material, laser cutting, heat treatment, and gold sputtering. The step-by-step assembly describes the integration of the spring assembly which includes the clamping of the spring and the tip mass, added to the spring to realise larger deflections and henceforth increase the sensitivity of the instrument for the small body gravity environment
The wood anatomical structure between two dated marks reveals periodicity of secondary growth of rainforest species
In the tropics, specifically in equatorial dense rainforests, xylogenesis is influenced by minimal climatic seasonality, and many tropical trees do not exhibit clear growth rings. This makes it challenging to conduct retrospective analyses and predict future tree performance. This research examines the presence, distinctness, and periodicity of growth rings in dominant tree species in two semi-deciduous rainforests that differ in precipitation patterns. We investigated eighteen tree species common to both forests. Using the cambial marking technique, we verified the presence and periodicity of growth-ring boundaries in the wood produced between marking and collection through microscopic and macroscopic observation. The study found that all eighteen species can form visible growth rings at both sites. However, the periodicity of ring formation varied significantly within and between species, and within sites. Trees from the site with a well-defined dry season were more likely to form periodic growth rings compared to those from the site with less pronounced rainfall seasonality. The distinctness of the formed rings, however, did not depend on the site. Periodic growth-ring formation was more likely in fast-growing trees
