This article takes a ‘bottom-up’ look at their political struggles in order to reveal the dynamics of changing discourses, the relationship between leaders and their services in the field, and the agency of activists, as well as shed light on similarities between the different movements. We argue that the relationship between these women’s movements on the ground provides us with a glimpse of de-pillarisation that manifested in unexpected porosities in and departures from party lines which were rooted in shared concerns, including women’s rights.(NL) Christelijke en socialistische vrouwenbewegingen speelden een belangrijke rol in de vernieuwing van onthaaldiensten voor jonge kinderen in Franstalig België rond de jaren 1970. This article is published as part of Journal of Belgian History, LV(1), 2025,
The records described in this inventory are held at the State Archives in Bruges (inventory code 513 - M145).This inventory is the fixed published version dated 31-12-2025. For the dynamic inventory under active revision, including recent updates and additions, please consult our online search platform AGATHA. Untangling forest history in the Central Congo basin through fossil charcoal analysis
The humid tropical forests of the Congo Basin, considered to be mature forest, are strangely characterized by an abundance of light-demanding species in the canopy, most of which are commercially exploited. This feature remains something of a puzzle because the abundance of light-demanding species in the canopy indicates an intermediate stage in forest succession. Current explanations show divided opinions within the research community. The first response is that these forests are undergoing recovery after human disturbances in the 19th century, which would explain the current abundance of light demanding species in the canopy. The second response is that light-demanding species, such as fast-growing species, require a lot of nutrients in the soil to establish, justifying their abundance in areas where the soil is rich. The third response is that light-demanding species are a component of mature forests and grow in natural clearings, contributing to the high functional and taxonomic diversity characteristic of tropical forests. However, within the boundaries of these diverse mature tropical forests, pockets of monodominant mature forests with Gilbertiodendron dewevrei coexist, and their presence remains a puzzle that has yet to be solved. Although the scientific community is increasingly unanimous on the causes of G. dewevrei monodominance, the origin of this phenomenon remains only partially studied. The period of appearance of this phenomenon in the Congo Basin still divides researchers. The first proposed hypothesis considers the monodominance of G. dewevrei as a recent phenomenon resulting from an expansion dynamic favored by the current environmental and human context. The second hypothesis considers the forests as an ancient phenomenon that persisted in the historical context of the environment and human activities. Here, we propose a pedo-anthracological approach based on the analysis of fossil charcoal and physico-chemical properties of soil to highlight these two persistent contrast in Congo Basin. Our main objective is to untangle the origin of the present-day Central Congo basin. To achieve this objective, we excavate 61 pits, each 2-meters deep. Each plot was installed in a pioneer forest, in the secondary forest, in the mixed primary forest, and in the monodominant forest of Gilbertidendron dewevrei; these pits are used for soil description, soil and charcoal sampling. With these samples, four types of analyses were performed : (i) Anthracomass analyses by profile interval, following standard procedures, will identify and stratify past fire events in forests. (ii) Stable carbon isotope(13C) analyses will differentiate the factors inducing forest fires. (iii) Identification of fossil charcoal using partial identification protocol and (iv) Radiocarbon dating will reveal changes on the century and millennium scales in biodiversity. Until now, G. dewerei forests have experienced fire events in past. Dating them will provide the link between monodominance and disturbance. The implications of these results for understanding long-term forest dynamic or long-term resilience of essential ecosystem functions and management of tree species in Central Congo Basin will be discussed
Global decadal measurements of methanol, ethene, ethyne, and HCN from the Cross-track Infrared Sounder
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) play an important role in modulating the atmosphere's oxidizing capacity and affect tropospheric ozone, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, and organic aerosol formation. Space-based observations can provide powerful global information to advance our knowledge of these processes and their changes over time. We present here the development of new retrievals for four key VOCs (methanol, ethene, ethyne, and HCN) based on thermal infrared radiance observations from the satellite-borne Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS). We update the Retrieval of Organics from CrIS Radiances (ROCR) algorithm developed previously for isoprene to explicitly account for the spectral signal dependence on the VOC vertical profile shape, and we apply this updated retrieval (ROCRv2) to derive column abundances for the targeted species across the full Suomi NPP CrIS record (2012–2023). The CrIS data are well correlated with ground-based Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC) retrievals for methanol (r = 0.77–0.84); HCN and ethyne exhibit lower correlations (r = 0.36–0.44 and 0.56–0.65, respectively) with an apparent 40 % CrIS–NDACC disparity for ethyne. The results reveal robust global distributions of the target VOCs from known biogenic, biomass burning, and industrial source regions, and they demonstrate the impact of anomalous events such as the 2015–2016 El Niño. They also highlight the importance of accurate vertical profile constraints when evaluating and interpreting thermal infrared data records. Initial comparisons of the CrIS observations to predicted VOC distributions from the GEOS-Chem chemical transport model point to large uncertainties in our current understanding of the atmospheric ethene budget as well as to underestimated HCN, ethyne, and methanol sources
