Impact-reducing Prosthetic Liner With Variable Volume & Integrated Haptic Feedback
Transtibial amputees face challenges such as loss of proprioception and fluctuations in the size and composition of their residual limb, which can compromise comfort and mobility. This project aims to create a transtibial impact-reducing liner combined with integrated haptic feedback to enhance comfort and restore proprioceptive senses. The impact-reducing liner includes impact reduction over pressure-intolerant regions, impact redistribution over pressure-tolerant regions, and a variable volume system that dynamically adjusts to changes in the residual limb’s volume throughout the day. The haptic feedback system employs force-sensitive resistors located on various regions of the prosthetic foot. These sensors transmit via Bluetooth to vibrational nodes embedded in the liner to provide the user with real-time feedback. Prototype testing has shown positive results in reducing pressure similar to the field’s gold standard. The haptic feedback system was able to generate vibrations at four separate nodes but encountered Bluetooth transmission issues when implementing a fifth node. The variable volume testing confirmed the need for additional volume throughout the day and outlined the future work for fluid flow and integration. Overall, the integration of these technologies shows significant potential to augment comfort and mobility over extended periods leading to a higher quality of life for transtibial amputees
Development of Bamboo Connections with Iteso Universisdad in Guadalajara, Mexico
In years prior, faculty and students at ITESO Universidad in Guadalajara, Mexico, have worked with local low-income communities in the development of bamboo structural end-to-end connections. To advance and expand on this bamboo structural research, faculty from ITESO reached out to Santa Clara University’s Frugal Innovation Hub to get a new perspective on the problem. With the given constraints of cost and strength, the engineer was otherwise free to explore solutions independently. In order to address the needs of the low-income community that ITESO faculty sought to help, a series of bamboo connections making use of bamboo culm end modifications (Phase One), external bindings around the bamboo culms (Phase Two), and a combination of the two (Phase Three) were created and tested. Tests were performed using a fourpoint bending test configuration on a Tinius Olsen machine. The test results and analysis, AutoCAD drawings detailing the development of the connection, and a “How- To” manual instructing how to create the connection were presented in Spring of 2024 and delivered to the community in Mexico
Dunne Hall Redesign
As Santa Clara University expands its community, more on-campus residence halls are needed to support the growing student population. Constructing brand new residence halls using traditional framing could take months or years, interrupting the academic environment and campus aesthetic. This demands technology that can speed up construction time. A proposed solution is to use modular construction, or construction that is partially or fully assembled before it is delivered to site. This paper will explore the feasibility of using modular construction to build a residence hall within a three (3) month summer quarter, when campus is less active and less student housing is needed. For the purpose of this study and hypothetical scenario, the site and architecture of Dunne Hall will be utilized, however, it is assumed that construction will begin with a graded site with an existing foundation, but no existing building. Using Structural Insulation Panel Systems (SIPS) for nonstructural walls and ConXTech framing, the complete structural system will be designed in accordance with the California Building Code (CBC) 2019 and American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) 7-22, specifically focusing on seismic adherence. In addition to structural design, the parking lot on Market and Lafayette Street will be reconfigured with multiple alternatives for the calculated number of trips generated for this dormitory, and the safety of drivers and pedestrians will be taken into account. The traffic intersection of Market and Lafayette Street, where Dunne Hall is located, will be analyzed in its existing conditions, and a new proposed plan will be provided to achieve efficiency and lessen delays for all directions based on the expected traffic impact. The stormwater management system will be verified for pipe size and length based on Santa Clara’s Municipal Code, and the sanitary sewer system will be resized to manage the increased capacity of the dorm hall residences. The landscape behind Dunne will have bioretention planters added in as new features for stormwater management, and the earthwork of the landscape will be analyzed. These two (2) types of design will be compared to the dorm’s existing systems and the feasibility of the proposed designs will be determined
Naturalistic Driving Action Recognition
Driving is one of the most tasks people do day to day to get to places more efficiently, but with many people using the road every day, distracted driving can be a big problem. Grothlaw firm states that in the recent years, at least 9 out of 3287 deaths related to auto accidents per day are caused by distracted driving [1]. Distracted driving refers to things that drivers do that are not related to driving [2] This can include texting, eating, talking to passengers, tuning the radios, etc... that can get the driver’s attention away from the road [2]. Many drivers do not realize the impact and importance of safety when they are multitasking when driving. Therefore, we will be participating in the Naturalistic Driving Action Recognition city track in the AI City Challenge, where we designed a recognition system utilizing Deep learning and computer vision that is used to identify distracted driving and to make drivers aware the impacts of distracted driving
SCU Maps: Augmented Reality Navigation for the SCU Campus
Navigating large university campuses efficiently can be challenging for students, faculty, staff, and visitors alike. Our research, including a comprehensive survey of the campus community, revealed dissatisfaction with current navigation options and the need for a solution to allow Santa Clara University community members to quickly and easily find campus locations. In response to this need, we developed the SCU Maps app, a mobile application for the SCU community that utilizes the user\u27s phone camera to identify the user\u27s current location, allows the user to select from a number of destinations on campus, and provides turn-by-turn directions with virtual arrows overlaid on the user\u27s surroundings using Augmented Reality.
We successfully met our project objectives of providing an app for both iOS and Android devices that can support both indoor and outdoor destinations and enables SCU community members to quickly and efficiently find their way to different campus locations. We were able to provide the app to numerous SCU community members who provided very positive feedback on the app. We recommend for the University to provide additional funding to enable release of the application to the broader SCU community

Understanding the Impact of Whiteness on the Lived Experiences of Racially Underrepresented Students at a Predominantly White College Campus
The purpose of this study was to understand how whiteness impacts the lived experiences of racially underrepresented students at a predominantly white campus. Through preliminary research, Critical Whiteness Studies (CWS) was found as a means for white practitioners to understand race and racism within systems of higher education. In this study, a history of racism and whiteness is reviewed in order to better understand how they contribute to the history of higher education. Critics of CWS mention that the area of study continues to oppress the experiences of racially underrepresented students as it does not highlight the impact whiteness can have on the students\u27 experiences. This study analyzed how whiteness appears in the experiences of seven racially underrepresented students at a predominantly white campus. The design of this study is qualitative founded on CWS and Critical Race Theory (CRT). A narrative inquiry methodological approach was used. Although the sample size is small, the findings of this study highlight the appearance of whiteness in various parts of the student experience, as well as the impact embedded whiteness within the structures and practices of a predominantly white institution can have on the experiences of racially underrepresented students
The Educational, Living, and Social Conditions of Farmworker Families Residing in a California Migrant Housing Center
Every year, thousands of agricultural workers and their families migrate across states and countries, playing a vital role in global food production, especially in California, home to the largest population of farmworkers in the U.S. Historically, migrant families lived in inadequate housing, but today the state offers 24 seasonal rental housing centers with approximately 1,883 units across 15 counties. However, this type of subsidized housing requires that families live outside a 50-mile radius from these centers for at least three months during the off-season, often forcing children to change schools multiple times a year, disrupting their education. This study explores the educational and social challenges faced by families living in a migrant center, particularly how the 50-mile regulation affects academic performance and social integration. Following a 2018 modification of the rule, there is limited data on how families use the exemption and how each center promotes local residency. Using Latinx Critical Race Theory (LatCrit) and testimonios, this research includes participants such as migrant parents, migrant youth, and community leaders and activists. The study aims to inform policies and interventions to improve educational opportunities for farmworker children, focusing on how they navigate the educational systems of the U.S. and Mexico and how their living conditions affect their sense of belonging. By understanding these experiences, we can develop more supportive educational environments for migrant children
