Designing Embedded Systems with Large Language Models
Get PDFAI has become increasingly involved in many development, research, and education facets. Tools have been made available to lend help in almost every field imaginable. From students asking for homework help on ChatGPT (GPT) to full-stack AI developers with Devin, the future of generative AI tools is now. Large language models (LLMs) have been developed for a breadth of applications and this is just the beginning. The main functionality this research is focused on is ChatGPT’s ability to code, specifically on FPGA boards in Verilog. As generative AI such as ChatGPT becomes more powerful and sophisticated, people should learn how to use ChatGPT to assist them in their work. In this project, we aim to explore the functionality and limitations of coding exclusively with generative AI to benchmark how capable the AI is. GPT has ample generative capabilities to write code in any language, Verilog being one of them. However, it often produces skeleton code that needs to be finished by the user resulting in having to make multiple attempts before reaching a productive answer. To prevent redundant responses, we have been developing a strategy for improving our prompts to achieve constructive feedback toward the end goal. It should also be mentioned that users should have basic knowledge about the field in which they are using GPT, not only to identify when the tool has provided a wrong response but also to notice patterns and guide the tool when it becomes stuck. We are continuing development on a hardware accelerator using an FPGA board written by ChatGPT, in which we hope to measure its ability to improve current image-blurring algorithms
Multi-Battery Model for Optimal Performance and LQR Regulation
No full textOpportunities for residential microgrids that can be disconnected from the main grid are becoming ever more prevalent with the usage of solar power and energy storage systems. With this possibility comes the requirement of controlling and managing such systems. This thesis presents a novel multi-battery model designed to optimize the performance of a residential energy system comprising an electric vehicle (EV), a stationary battery, and solar panels, regulated by Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) control. The proposed model extends the kinetic battery model to account for the interaction between two connected batteries. The research departs from economic optimization, instead focusing on the performance of the batteries in relation to their state of charge (SOC). Simulation results demonstrate the feasibility of the model in maintaining minimum power delivery to the residential load and EV, even under varying solar input and load demand scenarios. The findings suggest potential applications in larger-scale systems, with recommendations for incorporating first-passage time theory and tracking realistic load profiles to further improve performance
User Assessment of Passive Exoskeleton in Manual Material Handling
No full textManual material handling (MMH) tasks, involving activities like lifting, carrying, and holding various loads, contribute significantly to lower back fatigue, pain, injuries, and musculoskeletal disorders in occupational settings. To address these challenges, passive back-supporting industrial exoskeletons (BExo) have been introduced as assistive technologies to mitigate ergonomic risks associated with MMH tasks. This study evaluates the acceptance of BExos during MMH tasks in laboratory conditions, providing insights from users’ perspectives. The results, showing consistently reduced physical discomfort scores across tasks, emphasize the efficacy of the back-supporting exoskeleton in alleviating perceived effort during manual material handling. Notable reductions in discomfort, especially in critical areas like the lower back, upper back, shoulders, and knees during the box-carrying task, highlight the targeted impact of the exoskeleton on essential anatomical regions. Positive user perceptions underscore the utility of the exoskeleton in alleviating fatigue, promoting ergonomic posture, and serving as a comfortable and wearable assistive technology. These findings offer insights for safety practitioners and human factors experts, suggesting the potential applicability of the back exoskeleton in diverse occupational tasks and settings

The book brings together relevant research and insights from leading experts within philosophy, psychology, and theology, with a slight emphasis on Christian approaches to exemplars and imitation, especially given the reflection on these themes throughout the history of the Christian intellectual and mystical tradition. Passing: Anatomies and Physiologies of Identity Transformations
No full textAs an identity shift that has existed for centuries, passing is a strategy to change one’s perceived identity that cannot be separated from colorism, or the preference for individuals exhibiting European-like bodily features. The results of the psychological study of colorism undertaken by Crutchfield et al. show that this predilection is a “historical trauma response [that] not only incorporates subjugation of oppressed African Americans, but can also incorporate resistance” (826). Fairness in Search Systems
No full textSearch engines play a crucial role in organizing and delivering information to billions of users worldwide. However, these systems often reflect and amplify existing societal biases and stereotypes through their search results and rankings. This concern has prompted researchers to investigate methods for measuring and reducing algorithmic bias, with the goal of developing more equitable search systems. This monograph presents a comprehensive taxonomy of fairness in search systems and surveys the current research landscape. We systematically examine how bias manifests across key search components, including query interpretation and processing, document representation and indexing, result ranking algorithms, and system evaluation metrics. By critically analyzing the existing literature, we identify persistent challenges and promising research directions in the pursuit of fairer search systems. Dealing with Divisiveness: Ignatian Principles for Better Relationships
Get PDFInterpersonal and intergroup relationships seem to have steadily deteriorated in recent years, with an increase in the lack of civility and decency along with a greater willingness to attack and cancel anyone who does not agree with one’s cherished perspective on numerous matters. New popular phrases such as cancel culture, public shaming, air rage, and gaslighting have entered the common vernacular. Ignatian spirituality offers several helpful strategies for dealing with these contemporary divisive conflicts in a productive manner. These include (1) seeing God (or the sacred) in all things, (2) striving towards kinship with others through the pathway of civility, hospitality, and solidarity, and (3) managing conflict with accommodation, humility, and the expectation of goodness in mind. This article introduces and provides examples of these three Ignatian principles that can be employed in all challenging relationships, including both personal and professional as well as psychotherapeutic ones. They can be utilized in a secular or spiritually minded manner as well. Having more tools to improve relationships is especially needed now
