    Spirituality in Clinical Practice: Integrating Who We Are With What We Do

    Inspired by the recent emphasis on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts in professional psychology and in society in general, we were interested in how personal religious and spirituality identities, practices, and traditions inform professionals in their work as clinicians and clinical supervisors and trainers to integrate who they are with what they do. The spiritual and religious intersectionality of professionals was explored by inviting 12 diverse professionals representing several different spiritual and religious traditions to reflect on their identities and the integration that they do to provide evidence-based professional services. Additionally, we asked them to consider best practices in training the next generation of professionals as they integrate spiritual and religious factors into their work with cultural humility and respect for diversity in mind

    Ookami: An A64FX Computing Resource

    We present a look at Ookami, a project providing community access to a testbed supercomputer with the ARM-based A64FX processors developed by a collaboration between RIKEN and Fujitsu and deployed in the Japanese supercomputer Fugaku. We provide an overview of the project and details of the hardware, and describe the user base and education/training program. We present highlights from previous performance studies of two astrophysical simulation codes and present a strong scaling study of a full 3D supernova simulation as an example of the the machine’s capability

    Patriarchy in Igboland is putting our Christian credentials to the test. A prophetic and healthy church courageously teaches her principles and fearlessly puts them into action, for she is the portal of justice for the marginalized. Gender inequality and injustice against women have continued to thrive in many patriarchal cultures in southeastern Nigeria because of the frightening and diplomatic silence that stills the spine of the Catholic church leaders in some sensitive areas like women accused of adultery. Yet abundant resources are in the Catholic Social Teaching that can turn the painful history of discrimination against women into tomorrow’s promise of women’s liberation if the church chooses courage over complacency. In this thesis I will show that these wonderful resources, especially those dealing with gender inequality, justice, mercy and compassion are sufficient to reduce the intergenerational cycle of indignity that has made most women to shrink themselves to accommodate male ego, if the church becomes more alive to her God-given mission. Using Steven Bevans models of contextual theology, I will bring to light some discriminatory and unjust cultural practices in Enugu-Ezike and Aku and from the lens of Pope Francis the present leader of the Catholic church, I will suggest ways of creating a massive awareness of the injustices internalized and embodied in people, and then recommend ways to reduce them to the barest minimum to ensure the overall human flourishing

    VoxLabs: Real-Time Vocal Trainer

    With the rapid evolution of society, the barriers to entry into the world of music are more constricting than ever. The impacts of race, age, gender, and language on the quality of musical education and the accessibility to education in general is growing more and more. That is why it is more important than ever to develop a new accessible method of vocal training focused around improving craft through gamification and rewards, all while inspiring a next generation of ready to learn musicians. VoxLabs is a project created to help music lovers learn how to sing through an entertaining yet challenging environment designed to enhance users’ singing abilities through real-time corrective feedback, a plethora of musical lessons, and many fun games to play along the way. Younger audiences such as elementary school students, as well as people with a love for music, need our vocal trainer because it is a more cost efficient and enjoyable way to learn how to sing both professionally and casually. Realizing that singing in pitch is one of the most challenging yet fundamental tasks of singing, we started our development based around matching and reproducing a single tone, progressing to reproducing a sequence of tones, to finally reproducing an entire song. However, we decided to reduce the barrier of singing in pitch, creating a project that allows users to gain practice and experience at their own pace in reproducing tones with ease, through interactive visual lessons and feedback. By making use of Signal Processing and STMicroelectronics’ STM3240-G EVAL board, we created an audio processing algorithm that takes a user inputted audio which is then analyzed to obtain the fundamental frequencies sung by the user. We then compare these frequencies to a given control audio to give real-time feedback to the user, helping the user improve their singing abilities. With the time given, we focused on creating an effective algorithm and creating a proof of concept for the hardware aspect of our senior design project, creating a hardware system with the capability to test the effectiveness of our created algorithm

    Displaced and Distressed: Refugee Mental Health as A Public Health Priority

    This infographic examines the critical intersection of race, class, and gender in understanding the mental health challenges faced by Middle Eastern refugees in the United States. Drawing on Fundamental Cause Theory, Gender Role and Socialization Theory, and Stigma Theory, I demonstrate how structural barriers, socioeconomic inequalities, and cultural factors create significant obstacles to mental healthcare access for this vulnerable population. The analysis reveals alarming statistics: PTSD prevalence among Middle Eastern refugees ranges from 13% to 25%, with 48% of Arab refugees in the U.S. meeting criteria for depression and 58% experiencing anxiety. Additionally, the data highlights pronounced gender disparities, with refugee women experiencing PTSD at rates three times higher than refugee men. By identifying pre-migration, migration-related, and post-migration stressors, this work highlights how different sources of prejudice exacerbate psychological distress and inhibit help-seeking behaviors. The infographic concludes with recommendations for creating culturally responsive and gender-specific mental health programs, building community-based support systems, and increasing socioeconomic opportunities to improve the mental wellbeing of Middle Eastern refugees in American society

    Long-term abacus training gains in children are predicted by medial temporal lobe anatomy and circuitry

    Abacus-based mental calculation (AMC) is a widely used educational tool for enhancing math learning, offering an accessible and cost-effective method for classroom implementation. Despite its universal appeal, the neurocognitive mechanisms that drive the efficacy of AMC training remain poorly understood. Notably, although abacus training relies heavily on the rapid recall of number positions and sequences, the role of memory systems in driving long-term AMC learning remains unknown. Here, we sought to address this gap by investigating the role of the medial temporal lobe (MTL) memory system in predicting long-term AMC training gains in second-grade children, who were longitudinally assessed up to fifth grade. Leveraging multimodal neuroimaging data, we tested the hypothesis that MTL systems, known for their involvement in associative memory, are instrumental in facilitating AMC-induced improvements in math skills. We found that gray matter volume in bilateral MTL, along with functional connectivity between the MTL and frontal and ventral temporal-occipital cortices, significantly predicted learning gains. Intriguingly, greater gray matter volume but weaker connectivity of the posterior parietal cortex predicted better learning outcomes, offering a more nuanced view of brain systems at play in AMC training. Our findings not only underscore the critical role of the MTL memory system in AMC training but also illuminate the neurobiological factors contributing to individual differences in cognitive skill acquisition.     The proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices emphasizes a greater connection between humans and smart technology. From computer peripherals, personal electronics, and domestic appliances to building access management, healthcare, and security systems, modern applications are generating as much data or more than they are receiving from other sources. Human presence is a type of data that is becoming a compelling requirement for a plethora of today’s applications that must ensure seamless interactions of users with the systems and their associated services. The ultra low-power, high performance presence detection system is an accelerometer-based system capable of person detection, people counting, and operating as a low-power wake-up system for older, resource-intensive systems. Utilizing STMicroelectronics’ software and hardware we seek the sustainability, efficiency, and ethical standards that are necessary to prepare for the smart world with increased energy usage and privacy risks
