Disrupting neoliberal diversity discourse with critical race college transition stories
The college transition can challenge students’ sense-making of diversity, race, and oppression. Yet prevailing neoliberal discourses touting the market value of diversity can thwart this potential by promoting color-evasive messaging that avoids reckoning with racism. Guided by Critical Race Theory, we explored incoming students’ sense-making of diversity (n = 421) after being exposed to either color-evasive transition stories or more critical stories that discussed intersecting experiences with oppression. Using discourse analysis, we observed that Black, Latinx, and Native students and their Asian and white counterparts reproduced common neoliberal logics emphasizing the educational benefits of diversity. However, critical stories reminded Black, Latinx, and Native students of the limits of diversity to change structures. For Asian and white students, critical stories elicited more aversive reactions and more endorsements of how diversity broadens equal access. Understanding students’ diversity discourses can inform how universities engage conversations about difference to counteract neoliberal talk that undermines racial justice
The Sacraments of Initiation as ‘Proof of Concept’ for Bernard Lonergan’s ‘Four-Point Hypothesis’
This essay endeavors a correlation between Bernard Lonergan’s ‘four-point hypothesis’ – a theological proposal integrating trinitarian theology and the supernatural order of ‘created grace’ – and the sacraments of initiation. The same formal structure that Lonergan discerned in the experience of grace, itself a means of participation in the life of the Trinity, is replicated in the sacramental reception of that grace in those ritual acts whereby one is made a Christian. This at once serves as a ‘proof of concept’, lending credence to the Lonerganian proposal, and provides a speculative framework for understanding how it is that the sacraments introduce Christians into the divine life
Automating Theater Lamp Control Using PI Vision
The world of theater is unpredictable. We prepare as best we can, but at run-time, we know anything could happen and we must be prepared for it. This unpredictability is what stands between theater and automation. In almost every situation, a human can respond better to surprise changes than a computer can, but what about situations that prohibit the use of a human operator? One such example is that of follow spotlights, where a performer must be lit with a beam that follows them as they move across the stage. Sometimes, there is no room for a full spot booth, or the desired effects are so complex that one or more human operators will not suffice. Using a Raspberry Pi controller, a Pi camera module, and a DMX interface, this project addresses this need and will enable anyone to automate their spotlights. With intelligent infrared tracking locating beacon arrays mounted externally on a performer’s costume, this module will advance any moving light to the status of an automatic spotlight. Once installed, automatic tracking will be available to any theater company, not just big-name tour firms or mainstage Broadway theaters. Further development in this area could even allow multiple-performer tracking with a single camera or even 3D multiple-performer tracking with two cameras
Exploring the Professional Experiences and Encouragement of Black Male Educators as They Persevere in Racialized School Systems
This study explored the lived experiences of K-12 Black male educators as they navigated the education profession and racialized school systems. Through a qualitative research study, using a demographics questionnaire and in-depth semi-structured interviews, five Black male educators from public and private schools engaged with the following research questions: (1) How do Black male educators describe self-efficacy within the context of racialized school systems? And, (2) In what ways are Black male educators encouraged to stay in the education profession? The key findings include: (1) developing self-efficacy through passion, purpose, and commitment, (2) dehumanization through racial microaggressions and racism, and (3) persevering as educators through mentorship. Implications that were derived from the key findings include: (1) developing and supporting self-efficacious Black male educators, (2) addressing racial microaggressions and racist school systems, and (3) social networks and mentoring. The implications showcase that honoring and celebrating Black male educators in this research study provided insight into the development of self-efficacy, combating racial microaggressions and racism in racialized school settings, and helping individuals persevere in the education profession

Structured Isosurface Mapping of 3-D Scalar Fields While Seeking Extremum With Mobile Sensor Networks
Adaptive navigation (AN) techniques enable autonomous modification of an agent’s trajectory using realtime measurements of the local environment. AN methods can reduce time and energy expended to autonomously explore unknown and dynamic scalar fields representing physical features of real-world phenomena (e.g., pollutants, temperature, radiation) when compared to conventional navigation approaches. A coordinated group of agents, referred to as a mobile sensor network, can improve AN performance through cooperative and spatially dispersed sensing to determine the local scalar field structure and then use that data to inform navigation decisions for the network. This article proposes a novel method for performing structured 3-D isosurface mapping en route to seeking an extremum, which combines the two historically separate categories of extrema seeking and level set/contour tracking in a single mission profile. Characterization of an isosurface shape is achieved through structured mapping of the surface, described as a systematic “rendering” via contour tracing within periodically spaced planes which intersect the surface. Successive mapping planes are set perpendicular to the local scalar field gradient, calculated in realtime from mobile sensor network readings, as the agents follow the path of steepest ascent/descent toward an extremum. The result is a more intuitive and cost-effective characterization of the isosurface shape and gradient direction, that is also simpler for a supervisor to operate. This article presents the multilayer control architecture that maintains the geometry of the uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) cluster, uses AN control primitives to specify the direction of cluster motion, and implements a mission-level sequencer to establish the combined isosurface mapping/extremum-seeking functionality. The new controller is verified using high-fidelity simulations that include vehicle dynamics, outdoor wind gust disturbances, position sensor inaccuracy, and scalar field sensor noise
