gnóthi seautón/epiméleia heautoú: Michel Foucault and the Two Paths of Western Thought
Although it is not possible to conceive of the history of Western thought as a continuous and linear (let alone progressive) process of development, some paths seem to have been historically dominant, while other possible developments, however potentially fruitful, seem to have turned out to be “interrupted paths”. This paper is concerned with the interpretation offered by Foucault in the early 1980s, according to which Socrates on the one hand and Descartes on the other would have opened up two discordant paths to the key relationship between subjectivity and truth. In both cases, the starting point is the maxim gnóthi seautón. In Socrates, however, it is linked to (and subordinated to) the question of epiméleia heautoú, which in Descartes’ case would disappear completely. The modern-Cartesian approach would thus lead to a purely theoretical-gnoseological-epistemological conception of philosophy, which would lose sight of the strong practical scope of Socratic discourse. Contrary to this interpretation, an attempt is made here to show that, in fact, even at the heart of Cartesian thought one can trace an all but secondary attention to the ethical-practical dimension of philosophy and, albeit in a modified form, to the principle of the necessary “care of the self”
Gheorghiu, Oana-Celia. British and American Representations of 9/11: Literature, Politics and the Media. Cham: Palgrave Macmillan, 2018, IX, 269, 96.29 €, ISBN 978-3-319-75249-5 (hardcover), 978-3-030-09182-8 (softcover)
This study catalogues 9/11 fiction produced by American and British writers with the purpose of revealing the untenability of keeping fiction and reality separate. By viewing its selected corpus as belonging to contemporary realism, it employs the framework of New Historicism/ Cultural Materialism, both of which are deemed necessary to account for the study’s undertaking in establishing a continuity between literature and reality, using Stephen Greenblatt’s writings as a guideline. Particularly, his concept of “cultural poetics” is mobilized to highlight the exchange occurring between the social space and the aesthetic practice in the wake of the attacks of 11 September 2001 and the subsequent War on Terror. It aims to showcase how the chosen literary representations mirror the turmoil that Western identity went through after the event. Moreover, it sheds light on how the authors and their social milieu apprehend the Muslim other
Perfectionism’s Role in Shaping Adolescents’ Perception of Support from Friends
Perfectionism is theorized to be affected by one’s relationships, but also negatively impacting relationships with others. The present study explores the longitudinal associations between perfectionism and perceived support from friends, on a sample of two hundred and sixty-one adolescents (mage = 17.6 years), using a cross-lagged panel design with two waves. Results showed that perfectionistic concerns contribute to relative decreases in adolescents’ perceived support from friends. The present results support the model of perfectionism social disconnection, indicating that perfectionistic concerns may interfere with adolescents’ perceptions on friendships
PAID PARENTAL LEAVE IN SERBIA: THE GENDER PERSPECTIVE
For the last two decades, Serbian family policies have gone through several changes in accordance with contemporary trends and changes in family life and also influenced by EU regulations and recommendations. Current legislation is in line with the gender equality principle, enabling both parents to exercise their rights and to pursue a work-life balance. However, when it comes to paid parental leave, the Serbian legal framework is considered inflexible in terms of choosing the combination of length of leave and the remuneration amount. In this paper, we argue that Serbian parental leave policies must be analysed in relation to the specific context of a (unfinished) post-socialist transition at the semi-periphery of Europe, population decline and strong familism. The burden of parenthood is still predominantly on women’s shoulders, even though ideas about a “new fatherhood”, more involved in child rearing, have become more widespread. Whether they are employed or not, women/mothers remain the primary caregivers, while the typical Serbian family can be described as a male breadwinner model
Security Challenges for Ukrainian Orthodoxy During the Russian-Ukrainian War
The article looks at the rapid changes taking place in the Orthodox environment of Ukraine during the Russian-Ukrainian war, exploring the main challenges for Ukrainian Orthodoxy and the issue of the religious security of Ukraine. It discusses the Law “On the Protection of the Consti- tutional Order in the Sphere of Religious Organisations” adopted by the Ukrainian Parliament on August 20, 2024, and the tensions within Ukrainian Orthodoxy, notably from the perspective of the relations between the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), and the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), and the position of the UOC towards the Russian Orthodox Church.

Hyers-Ulam stability of some positive linear operators
The present article deals with the Hyers-Ulam stability of positive linear operators in approximation theory. We discuss the HU-stability of Bernstein-Schurer type operators, Bernstein-Durrmeyer operators and find the HU-stability constant for these operators. Also, we show that the beta operators with Jacobi weights are HU-unstable.

Some saturation classes for deferred Riesz and deferred Nörlund means
One of main problem in approximation theory is determining a saturation class for a given method. The problem of determining a saturation class has been considered by Zamanski, Sunouchi, Watari and others. Mohaparta and Russel have considered some direct and inverse theorems in approximation of functions. Sunouchi and Watari have studied the Riesz means of type n. In [5], Goel et al. have extended these results by considering Nörlund means. In this paper, we examine some direct and inverse theorems in approximation of functions under weaker conditions by considering Deferred Riesz means and Deferred Nörlund means. Also, we extent above mentioned results.

Approaching the split common solution problem for nonlinear demicontractive mappings by means of averaged iterative algorithms
We consider new iterative algorithms for solving split common solution problems in the class of demicontractive mappings. These algorithms are obtained by inserting an averaged term into the algorithms previously used in [He, Z. and Du, W-S., Nonlinear algorithms approach to split common solution problems, Fixed Point Theory Appl. 2012, 2012:130, 14 pp] for the case of quasi-nonexpansive mappings. In this way, we are able to solve the split common solution problem in the larger class of demicontractive mappings, which strictly includes the class of quasi-nonexpansive mappings. Our investigation is based on the embedding of demicontractive operators in the class of quasi-nonexpansive operators by means of averaged mappings. For the considered algorithms we prove weak and strong convergence theorems in the setting of a real Hilbert space.

PORTRAITS IN THE MAKING. GERMAN USERS OF ROMANIAN AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
Portraits in the Making. German Users of Romanian as a Foreign Language. The traditional approach to language learning has attempted to clearly differentiate between a first language or mother tongue and a second and/or a foreign language. In the last decades, these distinctions have become blurred – bilingual people admit having two first languages or L1-speakers living in a certain culture eventually view the foreign language as a second one. Consequently, the task of outlining sharp portraits of German users of Romanian as a foreign language (RFL) seems hardly achievable, mostly since there are several parameters to consider, a significant one being exactly their proneness to alteration, due to the ever-changing linguistic process they are involved in. Nevertheless, the present study aims to fulfil such a task, rather from a broad perspective, by providing a series of concrete representations of the students enrolled in the Romanian-language courses (A1 – B2+ levels of proficiency) at the Leipzig University between 2019-2024, focusing on their non-permanent and variable-dependent nature.
