No full textRecent studies on career orientations and decisions are largely based in the field of psychology and focus on individual decision making. However, people of varying classes and cultural backgrounds have different priorities when it comes to choosing career paths, as factors such as financial compensation, occupational prestige, and ethics may be more or less important depending on an individual’s relative social position, as well as the narrative surrounding career choice that they were raised with. In this study, I seek to clarify influences on career orientations and decisions through semi-structured interviews and an online survey of senior students at Swarthmore College. I find that students’ career orientations are most significantly influenced by childhood experiences, that self-identified class of origin is a more effective predictor of career values, that there is a Swarthmore effect which causes students to value ethics over all other factors, and that students have incomplete understandings of their own desires

Get PDFEste artículo analiza cuatro novelas argentinas contemporáneas: Turdera ( 2003) de Ángela Pradelli, Barrefondo (2010) de Félix Bruzzone, La virgen cabeza (2009) de Gabriela Cabezón Cámara y Las viudas de los jueves (2005) de Claudia Piñeiro. El enfoque se centra en utilizar la noción de ‘crisis’ como referente y marco interpretativo para comprender la complejidad de representar literariamente la realidad argentina contemporánea y sus procesos de exclusión social. Desde la perspectiva del conurbano bonaerense, estos textos ofrecen una visión matizada de las crisis recurrentes en Argentina, explorando cómo afectan identidades y espacios. Las narrativas de estos autores no solo traducen simbólicamente las transformaciones sociales, políticas y económicas, sino que también plantean cuestionamientos sobre la naturaleza de la ficción y su capacidad para abordar la crisis argentina. En última instancia, las obras examinadas no solo buscan representar la realidad argentina contemporánea, sino que invitan a reflexionar sobre el potencial transformador de la literatura en medio de la crisis, proporcionando perspectivas significativas sobre la experiencia argentina en el siglo veintiuno y las deudas pendientes de un país excluyente
The Burden of Blame : Coalition-Building In the Transgender Movement from the 1970s through the 1990s
Get PDFCoalition-building within the transgender movement has received scant attention from scholars in transgender history. The vulnerable period after the Stonewall Riots in 1969 was one of extreme growth in the transgender movement, as trans people came together to challenge injustices they experienced, such as employment discrimination, cross-dressing laws, police brutality, and equal access to medical care. This essay documents not only the extent of these injustices, but also the ways in which trans people united to educate and support one another in the face of injustice. Trans activists also sought to educate cisgender people and reform the prejudices of people in power. Through the examination of how trans people built coalitions in their nascent movement, this essay illuminates the power of alliances for minority groups seeking to reform society and build a movement
The Identity Crisis in China’s National Drama: Vilification and Erasure of the Homosexuality of the Dan in Peking Opera, 1910–45
Get PDFThe homosexuality of male dan actors — female impersonators — in the renowned Peking Opera has long been the subject of tabloid speculation and intellectual criticism since the 19th century, and yet little is said about it in modern-day China. While scholars have ascribed the cause of this change in perceptions of dan homosexuality to events of 1910–20s, including the work of Mei Lanfang, domestic political and economic change, and Japanese influence, I argue that Western and Soviet influence spanning from 1910–45 was the driving factor behind the vilification and heterosexualisation of dan actors.
I show the absence of homophobic stigma surrounding dan actors in fin-de-siècle China, before the introduction of Western ideas by the New Culture Movement. I then illustrate how the New Culture Movement’s import of Western sexology (1910–35) created homophobia and vilification toward dan actors. Finally, I examine how American and Soviet praise for dan actors (1930–35) was connected with the immediately subsequent heterosexualisation of dan actors in Chinese literature (1935–45) by showing that these new writings incorporated the rhetoric of American and Soviet commentary of dan to deny their homosexuality
