Exploration into Qualification Transformation of Employees Working with Decision-support-systems
Get PDFThe introduction of new information and communication technology (ICT) in the company is often associated with the need for new qualifications and skills as well as different fields of activity and responsibility for the employees. Studies have shown a skill-biased digital divide in certain fields of ICT. In this study, trend scenarios of qualification requirements of workers using decision-support-systems (DSS) were evaluated in four different sectors: civil protection, energy management, plant maintenance, hospital- and operating room management. Lessons Learned from Establishing the Energy-Informatics Business Model: Case of a German Energy Company
Get PDFEnergy and utilities companies find themselves in a paradoxical situation in which their traditional business models are losing profitability, and they must advocate energy efficiency and climate-protection goals, and thus encourage their customers to save energy. As a result, they must partially cannibalize their business models and experiment with new models and techniques. Energy Informatics (EI) offers promising business opportunities that alleviate the concerns of energy companies about traditional revenue streams. However, recent discussions on this issue lack proof of concept and success determinants. This business case study fills this gap by describing the journey of German energy company Energiequelle, which established a sustainable business model based on EI. On the basis of our interview data, we analyzed Energiequelle’s EI strategy and stakeholder management and present six lessons learned. We believe that our practice-oriented research provides profound insight, especially to high-level executives and policymakers
How Privacy Concerns and Social Media Platform Use Affect Online Political Participation in Germany
Get PDFDigital inequalities research has investigated who engages in online political participation, finding gaps along socioeconomic variables such as gender and education. Recent research has also highlighted how online platforms may facilitate political participation. Especially for multi-purpose platforms such as Facebook, where users are supposed to use their real names, issues of adequate self-presentation arise. The diversity of multiple audiences engenders privacy concerns, particularly when controversial political issues are discussed. We add to existing research on digital inequalities by focusing on privacy concerns as a critical construct. Using a survey of German Internet users, we test the effect of privacy concerns on online political participation. Unexpectedly, privacy concerns increase political participation. As privacy concerns are spread evenly throughout the population, they contribute little to the socioeconomic stratification of online political participation. Wie sehen News-Entrepreneurs die Zukunft ihrer Profession? Vier Thesen zum Journalismus von morgen
Get PDFDie Frage nach der Zukunft des professionellen Journalismus treibt angesichts der Transformationen in der Medienlandschaft nicht nur die kommunikationswissenschaftliche Forschung um, sondern auch die Branche selbst. Auf Grundlage von Leitfadeninterviews mit Journalist*innen und Gründer*innen von deutschen News-Start-ups tragen wir zu dieser Debatte bei. Wir fragen nach (1) den zentralen Funktionen eines zukunftsfähigen Journalismus sowie nach (2) den Zukunftstrends hinsichtlich Journalismuskonzepten, Organisationsformen und Erlösmodellen aus Sicht der News- Entrepreneurs. Ausgehend von diesen Einschätzungen können vier Trends identifiziert werden: (1) Der professionelle Journalismus besinnt sich auf umfassend recherchierte, ›gute Geschichten‹. (2) Die Illusion eines objektiven Journalismus wird durch einen Journalismus mit Haltung und Persönlichkeit abgelöst. (3) Die Organisationsform des Journalismus der Zukunft heißt Kollaboration. (4) Die Finanzierung des professionellen Journalismus muss zukünftig verstärkt aus der Zivilgesellschaft kommen
Skill Development on the Shop Floor - Heading to a Digital Divide?
Get PDFIn recent years, there has been a huge debate on how modern sensor technology and the increasing connectivity of production systems have changed industrial production processes and working conditions. This article contributes to the discussion on the effects of digitalization on skill development under different working conditions with the following question: How has learning in the work-process changed with the introduction of data-based technologies? To examine the interaction between digital assistance systems and organizational parameters on informal learning, we analyzed the implementation of digital assistant systems in two different groups: low-skilled assembly workers and high-skilled shop floor managers. Our findings suggest that a lack of autonomy in workplaces has negative impacts on informal learning and thus skill development. Audit - and then what? A roadmap for digitization of learning factories
Get PDFCurrent trends such as digital transformation, Internet of Things, or Industry 4.0 are challenging the majority of learning factories. Regardless of whether a conventional learning factory, a model factory, or a digital learning factory, traditional approaches such as the monotonous execution of specific instructions don‘t suffice the learner’s needs, market requirements as well as especially current technological developments. Contemporary teaching environments need a clear strategy, a road to follow for being able to successfully cope with the changes and develop towards digitized learning factories. This demand driven necessity of transformation leads to another obstacle: Assessing the status quo and developing and implementing adequate action plans. Within this paper, details of a maturity-based audit of the hybrid learning factory in the Research and Application Centre Industry 4.0 and a thereof derived roadmap for the digitization of a learning factory are presented
