Digitalization and the geographies of production. Towards reshoring or global fragmentation?
Get PDFThe relationship between digitalization and the governance and geographies of global value chains has not been explored systematically. This contribution discusses how digitalization affects the variables that determine the localization of manufacturing, i.e. the substitution of work through automation, the deepening of the customer–producer relationship, the rationalization of distribution through digitalized logistics networks, and the increased modularization of supply chains through standardization and ‘platformisation’. The results of the theoretical exploration defy expectations of a straightforward ‘reshoring’ of production through the combined effects of automation and benefits through a co-localization of companies within their target markets. Tendencies that would support a stronger integration of production in advanced economies are instead being undercut by ongoing countertrends towards fragmentation. The contradictory tendencies of a geographical integration of manufacturing and target markets on the one hand and geographical fragmentation through sophisticated supply-chain organization on the other will affect the technologically facilitated processes of value chain restructuring in a sector-specific manner
Forschungsinfrastrukturen für die Kommunikations- und Medienforschung im deutschsprachigen Raum. Initiativen, Bedarfe und Perspektiven
Get PDFTrotz ihrer hohen Professionalisierung hat es die Kommunikationswissenschaft im deutschsprachigen Raum bislang weitgehend versäumt, Forschungsinfrastrukturen aufzubauen, die den besonderen Anforderungen der Kommunikations- und Medienforschung im Fach gerecht werden. Es fehlen Langzeitstudien zur kontinuierlichen Beobachtung des Medienwandels, eine systematische Erhebung und einfache Bereitstellung von Untersuchungsmaterial sowie eine koordinierte Methodenentwicklung. Im Vergleich zu anderen sozialwissenschaftlichen Fächern, für die solche Infrastrukturen bereits seit Längerem existieren, büßt die kommunikationswissenschaftliche Forschung dadurch erheblich an Effizienz und Systematik ein. Obwohl diese Defizite lange bekannt sind und auch schon mehrfach beanstandet wurden, hatten entsprechende Initiativen zum Aufbau solcher Infrastrukturen für die Forschung im Fach bislang wenig Erfolg. Der vorliegende Beitrag stellt diese Initiativen vor, diskutiert mögliche Gründe für ihr Scheitern und formuliert auf dieser Grundlage Vorschläge für zukünftige Initiativen in den drei Bereichen Materialversorgung, Langfristforschung und Dateninfrastruktur

Trust, Automation Bias and Aversion: Algorithmic Decision-Making in the Context of Credit Scoring
Get PDFAlgorithmic decision-making (ADM) systems increasingly take on crucial roles in our technology-driven society, making decisions, for instance, concerning employment, education, finances, and public services. This article aims to identify peoples’ attitudes towards ADM systems and ensuing behaviours when dealing with ADM systems as identified in the literature and in relation to credit scoring. After briefly discussing main characteristics and types of ADM systems, we first consider trust, automation bias, automation complacency and algorithmic aversion as attitudes towards ADM systems. These factors result in various behaviours by users, operators, and managers. Second, we consider how these factors could affect attitudes towards and use of ADM systems within the context of credit scoring. Third, we describe some possible strategies to reduce aversion, bias, and complacency, and consider several ways in which trust could be increased in the context of credit scoring. Importantly, although many advantages in applying ADM systems to complex choice problems can be identified, using ADM systems should be approached with care – e.g., the models ADM systems are based on are sometimes flawed, the data they gather to support or make decisions are easily biased, and the motives for their use unreflected upon or unethical
