Mapping HCI research methods for studying social media interaction. A systematic literature review
In the last decades, researchers in Human-computer interaction (HCI) took numerous efforts to investigate people’s social media interaction. To understand how researchers in HCI have studied social media interaction, we examined 149 peer-reviewed articles published between 2008 and 2020 in major HCI conference proceedings and journals. We systematically reviewed the methodologies HCI researchers applied, the research topics these methods covered, and the types of data collected. Through the analysis, we make three contributions: We (1) pinpoint the topic trends by identifying three phases in the study of social media interaction in HCI. Namely, the early phase (2008–2012) focused on user behavior, the growing phase (2013–2016), focused on privacy and health, and the latest phase (2017–2020) focused on design. (2) We map methodological trends in the study of social media interaction in HCI. We also illustrate the trends in relation to the types of data collected in the selected works and, (3) identify underexplored study areas
Digital transformation and value chains. Introduction
New digital technologies based on the internet of things and artificial intelligence play centre stage in contemporary discussions about the prospects for economic development and the future of work. This article summarizes theoretical and empirical contributions on how these technologies affect global value chains (GVCs). We argue that the leading paradigms that analyse global production – the GVC framework and the related global production networks (GPNs) approach – are in need of some ‘technological uprading’ themselves. The GVC/GPN approaches acknowledge that technology is constitutive for the emergence of geographically fragmented production, but rarely address directly how technological change affects interfirm relations. The authors provide a framework that acknowledges the key role of technology while situating digital tools and systems in their social embeddedness, that is the role of human agency and institutions in shaping their development and impact. A research agenda is outlined focusing on three topics: the varieties of digitalization approaches in different world regions, the role of data as a specific form of intangible resource and the role of platform business models for industrial ecosystems. These topics are addressed in the special issue of Global Networks on ‘Digitalization and Value Chains’ introduced by this contribution

What Makes a Good Citizen Online? The Emergence of Discursive Citizenship Norms in Social Media Environments
The importance of citizenship norms—shared understandings of how citizens ought to participate in society—has been discussed at length in the past two decades, particularly in conversations around changing notions of citizenship in the digital age. Yet, most studies have gravitated between the two poles of dutiful and self-actualizing citizenship. In this study, we explore which citizenship norms people express related to their political participation in social media environments and which affordances and experiences in social media environments shape these norms. Through interviews and focus group discussions, we found that citizenship norms emerge in response to positive and negative experiences in social media environments. We found three groups of norms that are distinctive to the networked environments of social media: individual information care, discourse care, and considered contribution. These can serve as conceptual frames for understanding the normative underpinnings of discursive participation in social media environments from the perspective of ordinary citizens
The sum of its parts. Analysis of federated byzantine agreement systems
Federated Byzantine Agreement Systems (FBASs) are a fascinating new paradigm in the context of consensus protocols. Originally proposed for powering the Stellar payment network, FBASs can instantiate Byzantine quorum systems without requiring out-of-band agreement on a common set of validators; every node is free to decide for itself with whom it requires agreement. Sybil-resistant and yet energy-efficient consensus protocols can therefore be built upon FBASs, and the “decentrality” possible with the FBAS paradigm might be sufficient to reduce the use of environmentally unsustainable proof-of-work protocols. In this paper, we first demonstrate how the robustness of individual FBASs can be determined, by precisely determining their safety and liveness buffers and therefore enabling a comparison with threshold-based quorum systems. Using simulations and example node configuration strategies, we then empirically investigate the hypothesis that while FBASs can be bootstrapped in a bottom-up fashion from individual preferences, strategic considerations should additionally be applied by node operators in order to arrive at FBASs that are robust and amenable to monitoring. Finally, we investigate the reported “open-membership” property of FBASs. We observe that an often small group of nodes is exclusively relevant for determining liveness buffers and prove that membership in this top tier is conditional on the approval by current top tier nodes if maintaining safety is a core requirement
Gute Wissenschaftskommunikation in der digitalen Welt. Politische, ökonomische, technische und regulatorische Rahmenbedingungen ihrer Qualitätssicherung
Die Interdisziplinäre Arbeitsgruppe „Implikationen der Digitalisierung für die Qualität der Wissenschaftskommunikation“ der BBAW hat von 2018 bis 2021 untersucht, wie sich die Qualität der Wissenschaftskommunikation unter den Bedingungen der Digitalisierung verändert und welche Herausforderungen sich aus den Veränderungen für die aufgeklärte Meinungsbildung in der Demokratie ergeben. Im vorliegenden Heft erfolgt eine Beschreibung und Analyse der Kontextfaktoren von Wissenschaftskommunikation in der digitalen Medienumwelt, der damit verbundenen wissenschaftspolitischen Veränderungen, von medienökonomischen Faktoren für die Qualitätssicherung der Wissenschaftskommunikation und der soziotechnischen Veränderungen. Es werden zudem die Herausforderungen bei der Regulierung von Plattformen zur Qualitätssicherung von Wissenschaftskommunikation skizziert und Empfehlungen für Akteur:innen des Wissenschaftssystems sowie Gesetzgeber und Regulierer formuliert
