Comparison of oxidative stress markers in umbilical cord blood of vaginal and cesarean babies
Background: Oxidative stress is defined as an imbalance between oxidant and antioxidant substances in favor of oxidants. Despite the well-known adverse effects of oxidative stress on the mother, fetus, and newborn, the impact of birth type on oxidative stress experienced by both mother and child remains unclear. Aims: Our study aimed to investigate the effects of birth type on the oxidant and antioxidant systems through umbilical cord blood analysis. Methods: Between 37 and 41 weeks of gestation, cord blood was collected from 92 newborn babies. Participants were divided into two groups according to their mode of birth: Group Cesarean Section (n = 45) and Group Normal Vaginal Delivery (n = 47). The material used in the study was umbilical cord blood samples collected immediately after birth. Total Antioxidant Status, Total Oxidant Status, thiol, catalase, arylesterase, paraoxonase and stimulated paraoxonase, measurements were determined. Results: Neonatal cord blood thiol levels were significantly lower in both the Cesarean section group (195.60 ± 4.27) compared to the Normal Vaginal Delivery group (212.06 ± 6.01,p = 0.025), and in newborns of mothers with a history of urinary tract infection (189.9 ± 2.8) versus those without (206.26 ± 4.3,p = 0.041). No significant differences were observed in Total Antioxidant Status, Total Oxidant Status, catalase, stimulated paraoxonase, paraoxonase or arylesterase levels across the studied groups. Conclusions: The cesarean birth and maternal urinary tract infection history are associated with significantly reduced neonatal cord blood thiol levels while other oxidative stress markers remain unchanged highlighting thiol’s potential role as a sensitive biomarker for birth-related oxidative imbalance and supporting its use in early postnatal risk assessment
Incorporation of eggshell powder in metakaolin-based geopolymer concrete exposed to elevated temperatures
Recently, due to the high demand for concretes with a low carbon footprint during production, geopolymer concretes have been introduced. Metakaolin (MK) is widely used by researchers in the production of geopolymer concrete due to its ability to replace cement and its high silica content. This study investigated the mechanical properties and high-temperature performance of geopolymer mortars produced using eggshell powder (ESP), an organic waste, as a substitute for metakaolin (MK). Within the scope of the study, ESP was used to partially replace MK at 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30%, 35%, and 40% (by weight), and the flexural and compressive strengths, as well as the water absorption values were determined. In addition, the samples were exposed to temperatures of 200 °C, 500 °C, and 800 °C to determine the residual compressive strengths of the samples and to examine the internal structures of the selected samples. The results showed that using ESP up to a specific rate increased the strengths of MK-based geopolymer mortars. Additionally, 25% ESP yielded the best results regarding the mechanical properties and high-temperature performance of geopolymers

On Van Molecular Topological Modelling of Fullerenes’ Chemical Properties
In addition to graphite, diamond, and nanotubes, fullerenes are a fundamental allotrope ofcarbon that has received significant attention in the fields of nanoscience, nanotechnology, condensedmatter physics and chemistry, biological physics, materials science and technology, mechanical andelectrical sciences, biomedical engineering, and most recently, medical nanotechnology and nanoneuroscience. Molecular topological indices are essential tools to relate the theoretical and physicalproperties of chemical substances. Investigation of the chemical and physical properties of fullerenes'topological indices has been started in recent years. This study presents topological modelling offullerenes’ binding energies, the heat of formation, shape resonances, and Ramsauer-Townsend minimausing the Van molecular topological index. </p
Impact of Connection Types on Metaheuristic-Based Optimum Design of 3D Steel Buildings with RC Shear Core
This study examines the impact of connection types between a beam and a column, as well as between a beam and a shear core, on the optimal design of 3D steel buildings with reinforced concrete (RC) shear cores. Three metaheuristic algorithms, Adaptive Harmony Search (AHS), Biogeography-Based Optimization with Levy Flight (LFBBO), and Dandelion Optimizer (DO), were implemented to minimize the total weight of the steel frame while incorporating geometric constraints. RC shear core dimensions were treated as fixed due to elevator design considerations. The effectiveness of these algorithms was evaluated using two mid-rise steel building models with 20 and 30 stories, with a focus on the impact of varying connection configurations. Results indicate that LFBBO consistently produced the lightest designs. It is noticed that connection types significantly affect the optimum designs. In the 20-story models, the increase in the proportion of hinged beam connections led to a decrease in the optimum steel weight. Conversely, in the 30-story models, more hinged connections resulted in increased weight. Column-to-column (CtoC) and inter-story drift (ISD) constraints dominated the optimum designs in all models. It is necessary to account for connection types and structural drift when designing steel buildings with shear cores
