PRISMA systematic review: The application of natural language processing (NLP) to identify greenwashing in sustainability reports within the oil and gas industry
Background: Greenwashing refers to misleading sustainability claims not backed by real actions, commonly seen in the oil and gas industry due to its dependence on fossil fuels. While companies may publicly commit to sustainability, their investments often contradict these claims, obstructing global renewable energy efforts. This mismatch between statements and actions misleads stakeholders and complicates audit processes. As demands for transparency grow, there is a pressing need for systematic tools to detect greenwashing. Prior research highlights that the narrative format of sustainability reports makes manual detection difficult, underscoring the need for technology-based solutions. Methods: This study aims to examine the application of Natural Language Processing (NLP), particularly the N-Gram model, in identifying indications of greenwashing in the oil and gas industry. The research uses a qualitative approach with a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method and applies the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) framework. Findings: The N-Gram model aids in feature extraction by converting raw text from sustainability reports into structured representations and detecting linguistic patterns commonly found in overstated sustainability claims. When combined with classification methods like Support Vector Machine (SVM), it improves the accuracy of greenwashing detection. Key findings show that NLP can support auditors in assessing greenwashing risks and improving the efficiency of sustainability audits. Moreover, the integration of this technology promotes greater transparency in corporate disclosures. Conclusion: The application of the N-Gram model in the NLP context is effective in detecting greenwashing practices that were previously difficult to identify manually. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study offers novelty through the application of the N-Gram NLP model within the oil and gas industry context, which has been rarely explored in previous research. The practical implications of this study open opportunities for cross-sectoral implementation and the development of data-driven greenwashing identification standards in the future
Beyond carbon mechanisms: The role of energy service companies in strengthening energy transition policies and mitigating emissions
Background: The presence of carbon market mechanisms in Indonesia as a government solution to achieve emission reductions has proven to be ineffective. This ineffectiveness confirms that more effective and comprehensive alternatives are needed. In this case, ESCo can be one of the mechanisms that can encourage low-carbon development in Indonesia. Methods: This research framework uses a multi-method qualitative approach by combining a narrative literature review and document analysis related to the ESCo model and its effectiveness in reducing emissions. Findings: To address the low price of carbon in carbon trading and the prevalence of alleged phantom credits in REDD+ projects, ESCo emerges as a more measurable and stable mechanism. In fact, Indonesia has also launched regulations governing the implementation of ESCo through Ministerial Regulation No. 14 of 2016. However, the lack of social readiness, policy coherence, and suboptimal funding schemes have hampered the implementation of ESCo in Indonesia. Therefore, this paper provides several solutions by examining benchmarks from other relevant countries that can be adopted by the Indonesian government. Conclusions: The success of the ESCo scheme is determined not only by its business model but also by the synergy between public communication, policy reform, financing schemes, and public-private collaboration. Thus, ESCo in Indonesia can be a strategic step to ensure more tangible emission reductions in line with the Nationally Determined Contribution targets. By adopting best practices from other countries and mapping domestic implementation barriers, this study offers a comprehensive framework of solutions to optimize ESCo implementation for promoting low-carbon development in Indonesia. Novelty/Originality of this article: This article offers originality by presenting a comprehensive framework that integrates international best practices and domestic barrier analysis to optimize the implementation of the ESCo model as a more effective alternative to carbon markets for promoting low-carbon development in Indonesia
Measuring the success of urban renewal through residents’ lived experiences: A participatory assessment of community well-being, economic opportunity, and historical identity
Background: Medina Al-Munawara, Saudi Arabia is one of the oldest holy cities for Muslims prominent for its historical significance as the site of the twelfth Islamic battle. The city had faced challenges of poor building quality and urban planning, prompting Governor Prince Faisal bin Salman to initiate a transformative project to enhance living conditions. Focusing on Hamra’a Al-Assad neighborhood, this research examines the urban improvement project under that initiative. Unlike most common urban improvement research that mostly focuses on design aspects, this study uniquely prioritizes residents' perceptions to comprehensively assess the success of the project. Methods: A quantitative research approach, employing a semi-structured online questionnaire with both closed and open-ended questions, delves into aspects such as daily life impact, community empowerment, economic opportunities, historical awareness, and overall satisfaction. Targeting Hamra’a Al-Assad residents, the primary users of the neighborhood, the study surpassed expectations with 102 collected responses, facilitated by collaboration with local authorities for widespread outreach. The collected data undergoes careful analysis using patterns and connections, empowering residents and providing valuable insights for decision-making in current and future urban redevelopment projects in Medina Al-Munawara. Findings: The study showed that 38.5% of residents felt safer and 50% noted increased property values, but only 28.4% saw better economic opportunities, 35.5% felt stronger community ties, 45% perceived a positive cultural impact, and just 28.4% participated in planning, revealing key gaps in engagement and inclusivity. Conclusion: This research emphasizes residents' perspectives and informs practical decisions that prioritize community well-being and inclusiveness in urban redevelopment. Novelty/Originality of this article: The novelty of this research lies in its emphasis on a resident-centric framework for evaluating urban redevelopment in a culturally and historically significant city, addressing a critical gap in the existing literature that often overlooks the socio-cultural dimensions of urban renewal in Islamic contexts
Empowering waste recycling through technology: A case study of the octopus social movement
Background: Garbage is a serious problem that can have a negative impact on the environment and its surroundings, the large amount of waste produced in Bekasi reaches 6 million tons per year, making West Java one of the provinces with the most waste generation in 2022. This has become one of the triggers for the Octopus initiative in engage in social movements in the environmental field. Octopus is present in a new social movement by launching and developing a digital-based recycling waste management application. Based on these problems, this research is aimed at analyzing the Octopus social movement in managing recycled waste in the era of society 5.0. Methods: Based on these problems, this research is aimed at analyzing the Octopus social movement in managing recycled waste in the era of society 5.0. The method used is descriptive method with a qualitative approach. Findings: The results of the study explained that the new social movement carried out by Octopus was fairly effective, this was shown in the number of Octopus application users reaching nearly 200 thousand users spread across Jakarta, South Tangerang, Bandung, Bali and Makassar including Bekasi. This application also works with more than 1,700 unit waste banks and 14,600 scavengers who have been trained to become conservationists. Conclusion: Using applications is an effective alternative to mobilize people to be aware of environmental problems, especially waste issues. Exploring students’ perceptions of key service attributes in vocational education
Background: In an increasingly competitive educational landscape, understanding students’ perceptions of service attributes has become essential. Educational institutions are not only expected to deliver academic knowledge but also to provide high-quality services that meet students’ expectations. Methods: This research employed a descriptive approach using questionnaires for data collection. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling with a total of 82 student respondents. The study was conducted at one of the vocational schools in West Lombok. Data were analyzed using frequency distribution analysis. Findings: The findings show that although the majority of educational service attributes were rated as good (e.g., teacher adequacy 57.3%, laboratory equipment 50%, computer facilities 42.7%), toilet facilities (rated not good or very bad by 23.2% of students) and education costs (perceived as expensive or very expensive by 37.8%) received the lowest satisfaction scores, highlighting critical service gaps that vary by gender and require targeted design improvements. Conclusion: The analysis results show that most educational service attributes such as teacher competence, number of educators, syllabus availability, learning facilities, and school infrastructure are rated as good. However, two attributes, namely toilet facilities and education costs, were perceived as less satisfactory by students. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study provides empirical contributions by identifying the educational service attributes that most influence student perceptions at the vocational high school level. The focus on evaluating toilet facilities and the cost structure of education offers concrete directions for improving service quality management
Enhancing arabic speaking skills through the chain story technique at Islamic boarding school
Background: Mahārah al-kalam (Arabic speaking skills) learning at DIS Islamic Boarding School is a program implemented to enhance students' proficiency in Arabic, particularly at the Language Center. Students at the boarding school come from diverse educational backgrounds, including elementary, middle, and high school levels, with some having no prior exposure to Arabic. This diversity often leads to difficulties in mastering the language. To address this, the boarding school employs the chain story technique, a method designed to facilitate effective and accurate Arabic speaking skills. This study aims to explore the implementation of Mahārah al-kalam learning using the chain story technique at DIS Islamic Boarding School. Methods: This research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach through field research (Field Research). Data were collected using observation, interviews, and documentation techniques. The research subjects included teachers and students at DIS Islamic Boarding School. Findings: The study reveals that the chain story technique significantly enhances students' Arabic speaking skills. Students are provided with vocabulary (mufrodat) exercises every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Mahārah al-kalam activities are conducted weekly on Saturdays, followed by evaluations on Sundays to assess students' progress. The technique not only improves speaking skills but also integrates listening, reading, and writing abilities, creating a comprehensive and engaging learning environment. Conclusion: The chain story technique proves to be an effective method for improving Mahārah al-kalam learning, fostering students' confidence and proficiency in Arabic. Its integration of multiple language skills and interactive approach makes it a valuable tool for language education in Islamic boarding schools. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study highlights the innovative application of the chain story technique in Arabic language learning, particularly in the context of Islamic boarding schools. It provides new insights into how interactive and creative methods can address the challenges of teaching Arabic to students with diverse educational backgrounds
Environmental education gaps: Women's mythical beliefs and perceptions of flood disasters
Background: Nationally, flood disasters have increased, which have a negative impact on all sectors of social life, especially on the daily lives of women. Methods: The research method uses a qualitative method by conducting interviews with women who live on Wonocolo Street, Jemur Wonosari Village, Wonocolo District, Surabaya, East Java from Neighborhood Flats/Rukun Tetangga (RT) and Residential Flats/Rukun Warga (RW) in the affected areas and conducting field observations and supporting literature reviews. Findings: Every year, during the rainy season, floods occur, which become an important problem in various countries. Because, many negative impacts are experienced by the community, both individually, groups and on the government system. This study aims to describe women's perceptions of flooding on Wonocolo Street, Jemur Wonosari Village, Wonocolo District, Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia about the occurrence, causes, and impacts of flooding on women as flood victims and on public awareness of the environment. Conclusion: The results of the study stated that the causes of flooding were high rainfall, houses being built too close together, careless waste disposal, lack of greenery, poor drainage and culvert construction, limited road access, limited culvert and drainage construction, limited wetlands, houses being built along rivers, and river silting. The impact of flooding is material losses in terms of buildings, income, and daily life. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study concluded that women on Wonocolo Street, Jemur Wonosari Village, Wonocolo District, Surabaya, East Java still believe in the prevailing myths and lack awareness of the importance of protecting the environment together
Understanding the application of iddah and ihdad: A study of religious norms and local interpretations
Background: In Islam, there are terms iddah and ihdad given to women who have divorced or whose husbands have died. Methods: The research conducted by the author is included in field research. The data source used is interview data with 9 wives whose husbands have died in Kecitran Village, Purwareja Klampok District. While the sources used by the researcher are from books related to this study and the book al-fiqh al-Islami Wa Adillatuh. The data analysis methods contained in this study are data reduction, data display and data verification (conclusion drawing). Findings: In this case, when a person is left by their partner, be it husband or wife, they must undergo a period of iddah (waiting period) and ihdad (mourning period), which is carried out by the wife, not the husband. Even if the husband wants to get married the day after his wife's death, it is allowed. The purpose of this study was to find out the public's views on the implementation of the law of iddah and ihdad in Kecitran Village, Purwareja Klampok District, Banjarnegara Regency in viewing iddah and ihdad. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that the implementation of the law of iddah and ihdad in Kecitran Village, Purwareja Klampok District, Banjarnegara Regency, According to the community in Kecitran Village, leaving the house is allowed for urgent matters, namely work and also dressing up is allowed as long as it is not excessive. And accepting a proposal or getting married is prohibited. While in the law of fiqh and according to the views of the community have the same understanding. In addition, the mourning period according to the community in Kecitran Village, Purwareja Klampok District, Banjarnegara Regency, is permissible to wear clothes with striking colors, while in the law of fiqh it is not permissible to wear clothes with striking colors. Novelty/Originality of this article: in the law of fiqh, the use of jewelry such as rings, necklaces, bracelets, and earrings is prohibited, while according to the community it is permissible to wear them. The implementation or execution of iddah and ihdad has not been fully implemented because there are still many who do not understand the implementation of iddah and ihdad, or it has not been implemented in accordance with Islamic teachings, there are still many who do not understand the implementation of iddah and ihdad in society
Balancing industrial growth and environmental sustainability: Land use implications of cement factory operations in Ewekoro, Nigeria
Background: The rapid pace of industrialisation and urbanisation has significantly reshaped rural and urban spaces, with the resultant widespread socio-spatial changes. These forces over time have put pressure on agricultural land and other complementary land uses, hence exacerbating spatial inequalities as well as contributing to income distribution inequalities. Cement manufacturing, considered as one of the leading measures of industrial and socio-economic development, is also one of the most resource-consuming and environmentally degrading industries. Thus, this study evaluated the land use effects of cement factories on Sustainable Development in Ewekoro, Nigeria, with the general aim of formulating strategies that will assist in reducing the potential negative impacts while promoting sustainable livelihoods to the people. Methods: The research adopted the multi-stage sampling technique to select the households for the survey in a systematic and representative manner. Out of the two hundred and forty (240) questionnaires administered, two hundred and thirty-three (233) questionnaires were retrieved from the respondents, representing a 97.1% retrieval rate. Findings: Findings revealed that employment opportunities and the provision of social facilities were the most significant socio-economic impacts in Ewekoro, with Relative Importance Index (RII) values of 0.914 and 0.870, respectively. However, the respondents also strongly perceived the adverse health effects due to prolonged exposure to factory emissions in the study area. Regarding sustainability, respondents acknowledged Lafarge Cement’s involvement in product technology innovation (RII = 0.7648), which supports environmental protection. Conclusion: The study concludes that policy frameworks of cement factories should emphasise green practices and eco-friendly technologies to optimise long-term socio-economic gains that align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Integrated EM4-based anaerobic and aerobic wastewater treatment for sustainable tofu industry effluent management
Background: The Tahu Sehat Sari industrial area in Cokro Village is one of the largest tofu manufacturers, processing 3 tons of soybeans daily with 88 employees. However, wastewater quality tests reveal that the effluent exceeds regulatory limits set by Central Java Regional Regulation No. 5 of 2012, with BOD at 422.5 mg/L, COD at 845 mg/L, and TSS at 1940 mg/L. Effective wastewater treatment is necessary to ensure compliance with environmental standards and minimize pollution. Methods: This study evaluates wastewater treatment alternatives, including Anaerobic Digester, Anaerobic Biofilter, and Aerobic Biofilter, with the addition of Effective Microorganisms 4 (EM4) to enhance organic waste degradation. Wastewater samples were tested for COD, BOD, and TSS levels before and after treatment to assess removal efficiency. Findings: The implementation of EM4 significantly improved wastewater quality, achieving an 86% reduction in COD with a 0.3% EM4 concentration in aerobic treatment. EM4’s fermentation bacteria effectively minimized organic contaminants. The selected treatment methods—Anaerobic Digester, Anaerobic Biofilter, and Aerobic Biofilter—proved suitable for treating tofu wastewater, with final effluent concentrations of COD at 2.4 mg/L, BOD at 0.3 mg/L, and TSS at 35 mg/L, meeting regulatory standards. The estimated cost for the construction of a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is IDR 1,177,378,400, with monthly operation and maintenance expenses of IDR 6,110,297. Conclusion: The study confirms that an integrated wastewater treatment system using anaerobic and aerobic biofilters combined with EM4 is effective in reducing organic waste contamination in tofu industry effluent. Further assessment of land use and distribution systems is recommended to optimize wastewater management. Novelty/Originality of this article: This research contributes to sustainable wastewater treatment in tofu production by integrating EM4 technology with anaerobic and aerobic filtration, achieving high pollutant removal efficiency. The study also provides a financial analysis of WWTP implementation, highlighting its feasibility for similar small and medium enterprises
