Student contribution to the healthy campus program for supporting tuberculosis elimination by 2030: A strategic approach to public health and environmental health awareness
strategic step in achieving national health targets. The main problem faced is the high prevalence of TB in Indonesia, especially in the productive age group, which can hinder the development of the younger generation. Method: The purpose of this study is to analyze the contribution of students in the Healthy Campus Program to support TB elimination through an educational approach, socialization, and utilization of technology. The method used in this study is a literature study by reviewing various literature, scientific articles, and relevant program reports. Findings: The results of the discussion show that students have great potential as agents of change in educating the public regarding TB prevention, early detection, and treatment. The Healthy Campus Program is a strategic forum that allows students to play an active role, for example through independent screening activities using the SOBAT TB application, healthy living campaigns, and the formation of anti-TB volunteer groups. The use of social media and collaboration with health institutions also strengthen the role of students in disseminating health information. Conclusion: The conclusion of this study confirms that the active involvement of students in TB elimination can have a significant impact on creating a healthier campus environment that is responsive to health issues. Novelty/Originality of this Study: This study offers an innovative approach by integrating the role of students as agents of change through the Healthy Campus program that utilizes the SOBAT TB application for self-screening, health education, and social media campaigns, creating a technology-based active participation model in supporting Tuberculosis elimination
The potential of ingestible sensors combined with family involvement interventions for medication supervision in Tuberculosis patients: A literature review
Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is an airborne infectious disease that remains the second leading cause of death from infectious diseases globally. A major challenge in eliminating TB, despite it being preventable and curable, is the low adherence to treatment. This literature review aims to provide insights into the potential of ingestible sensors combined with family involvement interventions for medication supervision in TB patients, ensuring that medications are actually swallowed and addressing a key limitation of the previous DOT method. Methods: This study used a literature review method with the keywords "family engagement intervention", "digestible sensor", and "tuberculosis [MeSH]" to search databases such as Google Scholar, Science Direct, ResearchGate, and NCBI. Inclusion criteria included in vitro and in vivo experimental studies, cohort studies, comparative analysis studies, and reviews published in the last 10 years. Exclusion criteria included incomplete studies, inaccessible papers, and non-English/Indonesian texts. After applying these criteria, 35 journals and 1 book were selected for review and analysis. Findings: Ingestible sensors have shown over 80% effectiveness in monitoring medication adherence by providing real-time data for precise treatment adjustments. When combined with family involvement, these interventions address psychosocial barriers like stigma and lack of support, further improving adherence. This synergy significantly reduces non-compliance, prevents drug resistance, and enhances treatment outcomes for TB patients. Conclusion: Ingestible sensors combined with family involvement offer a more effective approach to TB treatment by ensuring medication is swallowed and providing psychosocial support, reducing risks of transmission, relapse, and drug resistance. However, equitable access and adequate infrastructure, supported by government and societal cooperation, are crucial for the successful implementation of this system globally. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study explores the innovative use of ingestible sensors combined with family involvement to improve TB treatment adherence, offering a novel contribution to TB management
The social security for female workers in Indonesia: A gender equality perspective
Background: The number of women workers in Indonesia has increased steadily from 2020 to 2024. Women have reproductive roles and are entitled to rights in the workplace, including maternity leave, miscarriage leave, menstrual leave, and breastfeeding breaks. However, these rights are sometimes not provided according to Indonesian Law Number 13 of 2003 on Manpower. Maternity rights are crucial for women’s well-being and should be granted in line with applicable laws. Methods: The research method used in this journal is a literature review in the form of case studies. Seven case journals in Indonesia were used as the primary references for this study. The research was conducted without comparing the main reference journals. Findings: The study found that women workers, both formal and informal, are employed across various sectors in Indonesia. Social protection guarantees for women, such as social insurance and employer obligations, exist but are not consistently implemented. Some companies cooperate with BPJS Employment, while others provide maternity, miscarriage, menstrual leave, and breastfeeding breaks. However, the lack of proper supervision by the government and labor unions has led to insufficient implementation of these protections, hindering the improvement of women’s welfare. Conclusion: Social protection for women workers must be fulfilled by employers to ensure that women workers can still exercise their reproductive rights. Providing social protection in accordance with applicable regulations for women workers can enhance the social welfare of women workers. Novelty/Originality of this Study: This study offers a unique perspective on the challenges in implementing social protection for women workers in Indonesia, highlighting gaps in supervision and enforcement, as well as the importance of fulfilling reproductive rights to improve women’s well-being
From crisis to resilience: Empowering communities through food security programs during the COVID-19 pandemic
Background: This study discusses community empowerment activities for communities affected by the Covid-19 pandemic through the food security program in the Tenjo Village by the Human Initiative. The research approach used is a qualitative research approach with descriptive research type with a research period from October 2020 to July 2021. This study will also examine whether there are differences in the stages of community empowerment carried out before and after the Covid-19 pandemic. In addition, this study will also examine the obstacles in implementing community empowerment during the Covid-19 pandemic in the Tenjo Village food security program. Methods: The data sources used were obtained through in-depth interviews, observation and documentation studies involving seven informants. Findings: The results showed that there were four stages of empowerment held in the program, including the planning, preparation, program implementation, and activity evaluation monitoring stages. During implementation program, there are several inhibiting factors that can be classified based on organizational aspect, networking aspect, community aspect, and external aspect. To overcome the obstacles from those various aspects, efforts are made to minimize the impact of those obstacles. Conclusion: The results of the analysis show that the stages of empowerment held in the Tenjo Village food security program are in accordance with the seven stages of community development. In addition, the obstacles that occur during program implementation are in accordance with the obstacles in the community development stage. Meanwhile, the efforts made to overcome these obstacles can be done with a description in the evaluation of the process and the results of the changes. Novelty/Originality of this article: This research not only describes the stages of empowerment carried out, but also analyzes the differences in the stages of community empowerment before and after the pandemic. The focus on change and adaptation at this stage is an aspect that has not been widely explored in community empowerment research during times of crisis
Spatial planning based on urban waste-generating: A streetscape design perspective
Background: The concept of sustainable spatial planning can solve the limited land area of DKI Jakarta Province. The increasing amount of waste generation in DKI Jakarta Province and the increasing population will cause the Bantargebang TPST's capacity to be insufficient soon. This research aims to analyze the amount of waste generation in DKI Jakarta Province. Method: The quantitative research approach uses mixed methods, including literature review and descriptive and spatial statistics. The data is secondary data from the Environmental and Cleanliness Information System of the DKI Jakarta Province Environmental Service (SILIKA). Findings: The results show the distribution of waste generation, presented in the form of a GIS (Geographic Information System) map. The results of this research show that the increase in the population of DKI Jakarta Province impacts waste generation; waste generation in 2019 increased by 54% in 2021. Recapitulation of waste generation in DKI Jakarta Province in 2021 Measurement Period I, the highest in East Jakarta, 2247.39 tonnes, and the lowest in Central Jakarta, 787 tons of waste. Conclusions: The study highlights that population growth directly increases waste production, with East Jakarta producing the most waste in 2021. The study highlights the need for sustainable spatial planning to address land scarcity and waste management challenges in the region. Novelty/Originality of this Article: This study introduces a GIS-based spatial analysis of waste generation in DKI Jakarta, highlighting the direct impact of population growth on waste production and the urgent need for sustainable spatial planning to address land scarcity and waste management challenges
Unlocking renewable energy potential: Overcoming barriers and accelerating the transition
Background: Indonesia's energy transition is driven by increasing energy demands, economic growth, and the urgent need to mitigate climate change. Despite being endowed with abundant renewable energy resources, the country faces significant challenges in shifting from a fossil-fuel-dominated energy mix to a more sustainable one. While Indonesia has vast potential in solar, wind, hydro, biomass, geothermal, and ocean energy, the adoption of renewable energy remains limited. This paper seeks to understand the barriers hindering renewable energy development in Indonesia and identify opportunities to accelerate the transition. Methods: This study uses Systematic Literature Review (SLR) with the PRISMA protocol to analyze renewable energy in Indonesia, using sources from Google Scholar and Science Direct. Literature selection based on relevance, quality, and recency, resulted in 37 publications that were analyzed narratively to identify challenges, developments, and potential of renewable energy in Indonesia. Findings: The results reveal that Indonesia’s renewable energy utilization is significantly below its potential, contributing less than 10% to the energy mix. Major barriers include economic feasibility concerns, regulatory and policy inconsistencies, insufficient financial and technical support, and a heavy reliance on coal. Additionally, the study highlights substantial renewable energy resources available, such as the 443 GW potential from various sources, which remain largely untapped. Conclusion: Achieving Indonesia's renewable energy targets requires addressing these barriers through clear and consistent policies, improved regulatory frameworks, and enhanced financial and technical support. The study suggests leveraging the country’s geographical advantages and diverse renewable resources to significantly contribute to a sustainable energy future. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study provides a comprehensive analysis of Indonesia’s renewable energy challenges and opportunities using a systematic approach. By quantifying the untapped 443 GW potential and identifying specific barriers, it offers insights into strategic policy measures and investment directions to accelerate the country’s transition to sustainable energy
Utilization of used lubricating oil for anfo-emulsion production: A study on blasting activities in the copper mining area
Background: Copper is crucial for the development of electric vehicles and renewable energy technologies. In Indonesia, PT ABC's open-pit mining operations are expanding, leading to increased waste generation, particularly used lubricating oil, which is contaminated with water and metal particles but has caloric value comparable to diesel. This study explores the potential of using this oil as a diesel substitute in explosives, focusing on economic and environmental benefits. Method: The study used data collection methods to measure the annual volume of waste oil, cost savings from using it as a fuel substitute, and compliance with hazardous waste utilization regulations. The research analyzed the impact of substituting up to 80% of diesel fuel requirements with used lubricating oil. Findings: PT ABC utilizes approximately 2,699,850 liters of used lubricating oil annually. The company achieves a 99.99% compliance rate with hazardous waste permits. Substituting up to 80% of diesel with used oil resulted in an economic gain of IDR 38,885,321,437 in 2023 and diesel procurement savings of IDR 2,473,012,791. These findings highlight the economic and environmental advantages of waste management practices in mining operations. Conclusion: The integration of used lubricating oil as an alternative fuel in mining operations reduces operational costs, enhances environmental sustainability, and aligns with circular economy principles. This approach contributes to sustainable mining practices by transforming waste into reusable resources, offering significant economic and environmental benefits. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study is original in demonstrating the use of used lubricating oil as a substitute for diesel fuel in mining, showing its potential to reduce costs, improve sustainability, and support circular economy practices in the mining sector
Water consumption analysis across the life cycle of beef: Environmental impacts and mitigation strategies
Background: Demand for beef is predicted to be risen by 74%, followed by the explosion of the global population by 9.7 billion in 2050. Australia as the most significant exporter of beef, together with America as the leading market, contribute vital roles. The increase in demand causes environmental impacts such as water scarcity. Methods: This study used a systematic literature review method to collect and disseminate relevant evidence from scientific sources related to air consumption in the beef and plant-based product supply chain. The process involved five main steps: problem formulation, data collection, data evaluation, evidence deduction, and interpretation of results. Findings: Based on the life cycle perspective, a kilogram of meat consumption from beef exported to America is 441.8–597.6 liters. The consumption includes processes such as nursery, fattening, cutting, transportation to Australian port, departure to America, and distribution within America. Conclusion: For instance, industrialization will reduce the water consumption, however, causes other environmental impacts. Therefore, dietary changes to vegetarianism combined with organic system becomes the best solution offered. Novelty/Originality of This Study: The novelty of this study lies in the life cycle analysis of water consumption in Australian beef exports to the US and highlights the trade-off between industrial efficiency and environmental sustainability while proposing dietary changes as a potential mitigation strategy
Analysis of vegetation diversity as an indicator of environmental quality in the green open space
Background : The availability of Green Open Space/Ruang Terbuka Hijau (RTH) in Kendari City is decreasing along with the increase in population and city activities. Bumi Praja Anduonohu Urban Forest as one of the RTHs can be threatened by pollution and land conversion. This study aims to analyze the diversity of vegetation in Bumi Praja Anduonohu City Forest, Poasia District, Kendari City. Methods: This research was conducted from December 2023 to January 2024. This research uses vegetation diversity data using a random method (purposive sampling) and is analyzed using the Shanon-Wiener Biodiversity Index. Findings: The results showed that the Diversity Index (H') at the tree level was worth 1.78 and the seedling was worth 2.48 including in the medium category. It was classified as low at the pole level with a value of 0.51 and sapling with a value of 0.58. The Pinus species dominates at the tree level with an INP of 72.32 and the Jelutong species dominates at the pole, sapling, and seedling levels with values of (224.43), (146.69) and (41.40) respectively. Conclusion: The study concludes that vegetation diversity in the Bumi Praja Anduonohu Urban Forest varies across growth levels, with moderate diversity at the tree and seedling levels and low diversity at the pole and sapling levels, indicating an imbalance in forest regeneration. Novelty/Originality of this Study: This study lies in its detailed analysis of vegetation diversity across multiple growth stages to reveal regeneration imbalances in an urban forest under pressure from environmental change
Indonesia and the Rohingya crisis: An analysis of the role of transit countries in refugee protection
Background: This article examines Indonesia's role as a transit country in handling Rohingya refugees fleeing violence and persecution in Myanmar. On the other hand, this study also highlights ad hoc policies and humanitarian practices carried out by the central government, local governments, international organizations, and local communities in Aceh in accommodating and assisting Rohingya refugees. Methods: Using a normative legal approach and policy analysis, this study evaluates Indonesia's national legal framework which does not specifically regulate refugee status, thus creating challenges in providing long-term protection. Findings: The results of the study show that although Indonesia is not a party to the 1951 Refugee Convention, the principle of non-refoulement and the value of human solidarity have been the basis of a relatively consistent temporary policy. Conclusion: This article recommends the need to strengthen national regulations, multi-party coordination mechanisms, and increase the capacity of related institutions so that Indonesia can carry out its role as a transit country more effectively, humanely, and in line with human rights principles. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study offers a comprehensive analysis of Indonesia's role as a transit country in handling Rohingya refugees, which has previously been rarely studied in depth from a national legal and policy perspective. This study also raises the importance of integrating the principle of non-refoulement into domestic regulations as an innovation in more sustainable refugee protection policies
